Objective: To examine the independent association of household food insecurity (HFI) with sleep duration and quality in a nationally representative cross-sectional survey of adults in Mexico. Methods: We analyzed data from ENSANUT-2012. We assessed the association between HFI and self-reported sleep duration and quality among 11,356 adults using weighted multinomial and binomial logistic regression. The Latin American and Caribbean Food Security Scale (ELCSA) was used to categorize food security level as secure (25.5%), mild HFI (43.7%), moderate HFI (19.0%), or severe HFI (11.8%). Results: Overall, 20.8% of individuals reported getting less than the recommended 7-8 hours of sleep/night, 20.4% reported getting more than the recommended amount of sleep, and 20.7% reported poor sleep quality. In unadjusted analyses, severe HFI was significantly associated with getting both less than and more than the recommended amount of sleep. After adjusting for potential confounders, there remained a significant association between severe HFI and getting too little sleep (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]=1.83, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.37-2.43). Compared with food-secure individuals, odds of poor sleep quality increased with level of food insecurity (AOR=1.27, 95% CI=1.04-1.56 for mild HFI; AOR=1.71, 95% CI=1.36-2.14 for moderate HFI; and AOR=1.89, 95% CI=1.45-2.45 for severe HFI). Conclusions: HFI is associated with inadequate sleep duration and poor sleep quality among Mexican adults. This study adds evidence to how detrimental HFI is to the well-being of the Mexican population, increasing urgency to address HFI in Mexico

Given a module MM for the algebra Dq(G)\mathcal{D}_{\mathtt{q}}(G) of quantum differential operators on GG, and a positive integer nn, we may equip the space FnG(M)F_n^G(M) of invariant tensors in V⊗n⊗MV^{\otimes n}\otimes M, with an action of the double affine Hecke algebra of type An−1A_{n-1}. Here G=SLNG= SL_N or GLNGL_N, and VV is the NN-dimensional defining representation of GG. In this paper we take MM to be the basic Dq(G)\mathcal{D}_{\mathtt{q}}(G)-module, i.e. the quantized coordinate algebra M=Oq(G)M= \mathcal{O}_{\mathtt{q}}(G). We describe a weight basis for FnG(Oq(G))F_n^G(\mathcal{O}_{\mathtt{q}}(G)) combinatorially in terms of walks in the type AA weight lattice, and standard periodic tableaux, and subsequently identify FnG(Oq(G))F_n^G(\mathcal{O}_{\mathtt{q}}(G)) with the irreducible "rectangular representation" of height NN of the double affine Hecke algebra.Comment: 37 pages, 14 figures; Several missing references added with discussion that includes proper citation to the

    Quantum Character Theory

We develop a q\mathtt{q}-analogue of the theory of conjugation equivariant D\mathcal D-modules on a complex reductive group GG. In particular, we define quantum Hotta-Kashiwara modules and compute their endomorphism algebras. We use the Schur-Weyl functor of the second author, and develop tools from the corresponding double affine Hecke algebra to study this category in the cases G=GLNG=GL_N and SLNSL_N. Our results also have an interpretation in skein theory (explored further in a sequel paper), namely a computation of the GLNGL_N and SLNSL_N-skein algebra of the 2-torus.Comment: 51 pages, comments welcome

Coaching Initiative for Beginning Teachers (BT): Lessons Learned from One District’s BT Support Program

    Get PDF
Instructional coaching is a way to support classroom teachers in their efforts to provide high quality instruction across academic content areas. Because of beginner teachers’ needs for extra support, many districts are now embracing instructional coaches to provide specific pedagogical feedback to their beginning teachers via job-embedded, individualized, and sustained professional guidance. This initial, exploratory study employed mixed methods to gain both qualitative and quantitative insights into one district’s Beginning Teacher Support Program in general and Coaching Program in particular. Results indicate that, without a laser-like focus on instruction, the impact of coaching on student achievement and teacher retention is limited. Sharing resources, providing emotional support and helping new teachers manage stress is important but discussing instructional strategies, observing and discussing lessons, and modeling instruction is critically more important

Construction of Social Sustainability in Milk Production Systems in Central Mexico

Objective: To build mathematical models to evaluate the social sustainability of small-scale milk production systems. Design/Methodology/Approach: Thirty small-scale cowsheds were analyzed. Two models were built using multivariate regression, estimated with ordinary least squares and considering the factors that producers perceive as important for social sustainability. Results: The first model (ER) included tangible variables and the second intangible variables (SR). Both models explained more than 80% of the variables associated with social sustainability. Study Limitations/Implications: The results represent an effort to link the statistical analysis with qualitative data that is difficult to quantify. Conclusions: The ER and SR models represent a proposal for counting immaterial indicators so they can be incorporated into the sustainability analysis. Both models could be a methodological proposal to connect statistical data with purely qualitative data such as perceptionThis study is part of the project with key 129449/2009 financed by CONACy

Payments for Carbon Sequestration to Alleviate Development Pressure in a Rapidly Urbanizing Region

The purpose of this study was to determine individuals’ willingness to enroll in voluntary payments for carbon sequestration programs through the use of a discrete choice experiment delivered to forest owners living in the rapidly urbanizing region surrounding Charlotte, North Carolina. We examined forest owners’ willingness to enroll in payments for carbon sequestration policies under different levels of financial incentives (annual revenue), different contract lengths and different program administrators (e.g., private companies versus a state or federal agency). We also examined the influence forest owners’ sense of place had on their willingness to enroll in hypothetical programs. Our results showed a high level of ambivalence towards participating in payments for carbon sequestration programs. However, both financial incentives and contract lengths significantly influenced forest owners’ intent to enroll. Neither program administration nor forest owners’ sense of place influenced intent to enroll. While our analyses indicated payments from carbon sequestration programs are not currently competitive with the monetary returns expected from timber harvest or property sales, certain forest owners might see payments for carbon sequestration programs as a viable option for offsetting increasing tax costs as development encroaches and property values rise

Landscape Values and Aesthetic Preferences Across the Front Range

Boulder’s Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) lands are managed to provide a diverse set of benefits valued by Boulder’s residents as well as tourists. Not all OSMP lands provide the same set of benefits however. Understanding how the values associated with OSMP lands vary across the region can provide managers with insights into how best to allocate resources so that they yield the maximum public benefit. In addition to an understanding of the values visitors associate with OSMP lands, management can benefit from knowledge of how different features of the landscape impact user experiences, both positively and negatively
