    Influence of process parameters on physical dimensions of AA6063 aluminium alloy coating on mild steel in friction surfacing

    AbstractAn attempt is made in the present study to obtain the relationships among process parameters and physical dimensions of AA6063 aluminium alloy coating on IS2062 mild steel obtained through friction surfacing and their impact on strength and ductility of the coating. Factorial experimental design technique was used to investigate and select the parameter combination to achieve a coating with adequate strength and ductility. Spindle speed, axial force and table traverse speed were observed to be the most significant factors on physical dimensions. It was observed that the thickness of the coating decreased as the coating width increased. In addition, the width and thickness of the coatings are higher at low and high torques. At intermediate torque values, when the force is high, the width of the coating is high, and its thickness is thin; and when the force is low, the width and thickness are low. The interaction effect between axial force (F) – table traverse speed (Vx) and spindle speed (N) – table traverse speed (Vx) produced an increasing effect on coating width and thickness, but other interactions exhibited decreasing influence. It has also been observed that sound coatings could be obtained in a narrow set of parameter range as the substrate-coating materials are metallurgically incompatible and have a propensity to form brittle intermetallics

    Pakshaghata is one among 80 Vata Namathmaja Vyadhi. In Pakshaghata vitiated Vata resides in one half of body and causes Vishoshana of Sira and Snayu leading to loosening of joints results into manifestation of symptoms like Cheshta Nivrutti, Ruja and Vakstambha. Pakshaghata can be correlated to stroke or CVA. The study aims to evaluate the combined effectiveness of Maharasnadi Kashaya with Shunti Churna as Anupana in management of Pakshaghata (CVA due to infarct). The open label prospective clinical study was conducted among the 32 patients of Pakshaghata by convenient sampling method at a tertiary Hospital Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College of Ayurveda & Hospital, Hassan, Karnataka from December 2018 to December 2019. The effectiveness of the drug showed improvement in primary outcome measures such as Cheshta Nivrutti, Vakstambha and Ruk in subjects of Pakshaghata with p value < 0.05. In this study, maximum improvement was found in “Ruk” followed by “Cheshta Nivrutti” and then “Vak Stambha”. Hence this drug is more effective in “Saruja Pakshaghata” hence; it showed improvement in the NIH stroke scale parameters with p value < 0.05.     An unusual termination of facial vein and anterior division of retromandibular vein into external jugular vein: a case report.

    Facial vein, being the largest vein of the face forms the common facial vein after joining with the anterior division of retromandibular vein below the angle of the mandible. Usually, it drains into the internal jugular vein. During routine dissection of head and neck region of a male cadaver, aged approximately 50 years, an unusual pattern in the termination of veins on the left side of the neck was observed. The formation, course and termination of external jugular vein were normal. The anterior division of retromandibular vein joined with external jugular vein about 5 cm above the clavicle and the facial vein opened into the external jugular vein about 2.5 cm above the clavicle. In addition, there was a thin venous communication between anterior division of retromandibular vein and external jugular vein. The superficial veins of the neck are often used for cannulation; either for intravenous infusion or for central venous pressure monitoring. Furthermore, these venous segments are used as a patch for carotid endarterectomies. Hence, a thorough knowledge of the normal anatomy and their variations may be useful for performing these procedures

    Reconstruction of the insulin-like signalling pathway of Haemonchus contortus

    Background: In the present study, we reconstructed the insulin/insulin-like growth factor 1 signalling (IIS) pathway for Haemonchus contortus, which is one of the most important eukaryotic pathogens of livestock worldwide and is related to the free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Methods: We curated full-length open-reading frames from assembled transcripts, defined the complement of genes that encode proteins involved in this pathway and then investigated the transcription profiles of these genes for all key developmental stages of H. contortus. Results: The core components of the IIS pathway are similar to their respective homologs in C. elegans. However, there is considerable variation in the numbers of isoforms between H. contortus and C. elegans and an absence of AKT-2 and DDL-2 homologs from H. contortus. Interestingly, DAF-16 has a single isoform in H. contortus compared with 12 in C. elegans, suggesting novel functional roles in the parasitic nematode. Some IIS proteins, such as DAF-18 and SGK-1, vary in their functional domains, indicating distinct roles from their homologs in C. elegans. Conclusions: This study paves the way for the further characterization of key signalling pathways in other socioeconomically important parasites and should help understand the complex mechanisms involved in developmental processes

    The “Spot 14” Gene Resides on the Telomeric End of the 11q13 Amplicon and is Expressed in Lipogenic Breast Cancers: Implications for Control of Tumor Metabolism

    Enhanced long chain fatty acid synthesis may occur in breast cancer, where it is necessary for tumor growth and predicts a poor prognosis. “Spot 14” (S14) is a carbohydrate- and thyroid hormone-inducible nuclear protein specific to liver, adipose, and lactating mammary tissues that functions to activate genes encoding the enzymes of fatty acid synthesis. Amplification of chromosome region 11q13, where the S14 gene (THRSP) resides, also predicts a poor prognosis in breast tumors. We localized the S14 gene between markers D11S906 and D11S937, at the telomeric end of the amplified region at 11q13, and found that it was amplified and expressed in breast cancer-derived cell lines. Moreover, concordant expression of S14 and a key lipogenic enzyme (acetyl-CoA carboxylase) in a panel of primary breast cancer specimens strongly supported a role for S14 as a determinant of tumor lipid metabolism. S14 expression provides a pathophysiological link between two prognostic indicators in breast cancer: enhanced lipogenesis and 11q13 amplification

    Abnormal muscle in the anterior compartment of the forearm: a case report

    During routine dissection for the undergraduate medical students, we encountered an unusual, additional muscle in the anterior compartment of the forearm. This muscle took origin from the anterior surface of the radius in common with the flexor digitorum superficialis muscle. It had a tendon of origin and a tendon of insertion. Its fleshy radial belly and the tendon of insertion, crossed superficial to the median nerve. The muscle was inserted partly to the flexor retinaculum and partly to the undersurface of palmar aponeurosis. The observations made by us in the present case will supplement our knowledge of variations of the muscles in this region which could be useful for hand surgeons as it could possibly compress the median nerve because of its close relationship to it
