Morphometric measurements of the thalamus and interthalamic adhesion by MRI in the South-East of the Caspian Sea border
Objectives: To assess the gender differences and the age-related morphometrical changes of the thalamus, interthalamic adhesion, and the right-left differences of the thalamus of the native Fars ethnic group in the South-East of the Caspian Sea border Methods: This descriptive study was carried out on 97 patients (44 males and 53 females) without neuropathologic changes and symptoms admitted to the Kowsar MRI center in the South-East of the Caspian Sea border (Gorgan City, Northern Iran) in 2006. Thalamic dimensions were measured by MR images. The vertical lengths of the thalami and interthalamic adhesion were measured in the coronal sections, while the anteroposterior and transverse length measurements of the thalami and interthalamic adhesion were obtained in the axial plane. The data were assessed by SPSS 11.5 statistics program. Results: Thalamic dimensions were longer in males. There was no significant correlation between size of thalamus and interthalamic adhesion regarding age; however, we found that thalamic dimensions increase a little with age until the 31-40 years group, and decreased after that. There was no correlation between age and gender groups and dimensions of the interthalamic adhesion. Conclusion: This study showed that there are no significant differences between right and left sides of the thalamus, however, the left-side thalamic dimensions were a little longer than the right
The quality of life in boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy
We conducted a study to evaluate the quality of life in boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy aged 8–18 years, compared with that in matched healthy controls. A total of 85 boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy aged 8–18 years and 136 age, sex and living place matched healthy controls were included in this study. Patients and one of their parents separately completed the 27-item Persian version of KIDSCREEN questionnaire (child and adolescent version and parent version). From the children's perspective, the quality of life in patients was found to be lower in two subclasses: “physical activities and health” (p < 0.001) and “friends” (p = 0.005). Parental estimation of their sick child's quality of life was significantly lower than children's own assessment in two subclasses: “physical activities and health” (p < 0.001) and “general mood and feelings” (p < 0.001). Our results indicate that boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy have quite a satisfactory quality of life. A happier and more hopeful life can be promoted through increasing social support and improving the parental knowledge regarding their child's more positive life perspective. © 2016 Elsevier B.V
The validity and reliability of autism behavior checklist in Iran
Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychometric features of the Persian version of the Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC). Method: The International Quality of Life Assessment (IQOLA) approach was used to translate the English ABC into Persian. A total sample of 184 parents of children including 114 children with autism disorder (mean age =7.21, SD =1.65) and 70 typically developing children (mean age = 6.82, SD =1.75) completed the ABC. Internal consistency, test-retest reliability, concurrent and discriminant validity, and cut-off score were assessed. Results: The results of this study revealed that the Persian version of the ABC has an acceptable degree of internal consistency (.73). Test-retest comparisons using interclass correlation confirmed the instrument's time stability (.83). The instrument's concurrent validity with Gilliam Autism Rating Scale (GARS) was verified; the correlation between total scores was .94. In the discriminant validity, the autism group had significantly higher scores compared to the normal group. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis revealed that individuals with total scores below 25 are less likely to be in the autism group. Conclusion: The Persian version of the ABC can be used as an initial screening tool in clinical contexts
Evaluating reliability and predictive validity of the persian translation of quantitative checklist for autism in toddlers (Q-CHAT)
Objective: Early screening of autism increases the chance of receiving timely intervention. Using the Parent Report Questionnaires is effective in screening autism. The Q-CHAT is a new instrument that has shown several advantages than other screening tools. Because there is no adequate tool for the early screening of autistic traits in Iranian children, we aimed to investigate the adequacy of the Persian translation of Q-CHAT. Method: At first, we prepared the Persian translation of the Quantitative Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (Q-CHAT). After that, an appropriate sample was selected and the check list was administered. Our sample included 100 children in two groups (typically developing and autistic children) who had been selected conveniently .Pearson's r was used to determine test-retest reliability, and Cronbach's alpha coefficient was used to explore the internal consistency of Q-CHAT. We used the receiver operating characteristics curve (ROC) to investigate whether Q-CHAT can adequately discriminate between typically developing and ASD children or not. Data analysis was carried out by SPSS 19. Result: The typically developing group consisted of 50 children with the mean age of 27.14 months, and the ASD group included50 children with the mean age of 29.62 months. The mean of the total score for the typically developing group was 22.4 (SD=6.26) on Q-CHAT and it was 50.94 (SD=12.35) for the ASD group, which was significantly different (p=0.00).The Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the checklist was 0.886, and test-retest reliability was calculated as 0.997 (p<0.01). The estimated area under the curve (AUC) was 0.971. It seems that the total score equal to 30 can be a good cut point to identify toddlers who are at risk of autism (sensitivity= 0.96 and specificity= 0.90). Conclusion: The Persian translation of Q-CHAT has good reliability and predictive validity and can be used as a screening tool todetect18 to 24 months old children who are at risk of autism
Evaluation of post operative analgesic efficacy of intramuscular pethidine, compared to indometacin and diclofenac Na suppositories in unilateral inguinal hernioplasty patients
We compared analgesic effects of intramuscular pethidine to diclofenac sodium and indometacin suppositories. This study is a semiexperimental clinical trial study over 55 patients of 17 to 60 years old who had undergone unilateral inguinal hernioplasty. These patients divided into 3 groups incidentally the first group including 17 patients who received 100 mg indometacin suppository every 8 h to relief postoperative pain. The second group of 18 patients who received 100 mg Diclofenac Na suppository every 8 h and the third group including 20 patients who received 0.5 mg kg-1 body weight pethidine intramuscularly every 8 h and the first dose of each drug started 2 h after termination of operation. The severity of pain was checked by Visual Analogue Scale (VSA) method every 2 h for 24 h. Mean pain severity checked and compared in 6 h intervals. Mean pain severity and standard deviation in the first 24 h were 23±12 for indometacin and 27±12 for pethidine and 31±9 for diclofenac Na groups respectively. There is no meaningful difference in pain relief during the first post op day. We concluded that Indometacin and diclofenac Na suppositories are good substitutes of intramuscular pethidine to relief post op pain during the first post op day
The Farsi Version of the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire Self Report Form: The Normative Data and Scale Properties
Objective:This study was performed to evaluate the normative data and psychometric properties and the internal consistency of the Farsi (Persian) version of the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) self-report form, as a screening tool in a community-based sample of 12 to 17 year-old adolescents of urban Tehran.Materials & Methods: In this investigation, 1105 adolescents (12 to 17 years old), selected from 250 clusters from all the 22 municipality areas of Tehran, responded to 25 questions of the Farsi version of SDQ self-report form. The frequency of each symptom domains according to Goodman's cutoff points and 90th percentile and the mean score in each subscale were determined. Results:The 90th percentile cutoff points were somewhat different from those of the previous reports. Using Goodman's cutoff points, the prevalence of symptom domains was relatively high. For example, 13.7 percent of the adolescents studied had total scores equal to 20 or more. There were significant correlations between different subscales and their constituting questions.Conclusion:Self-report form of SDQ is a valuable tool in the screening of adolescent psychopathologies. Frequency of majority of the symptom domains seems to be higher in the adolescents in Tehran urban areas
Reliability and validity of the persian version of compulsive eating scale (CES) in overweight or obese women and its relationship with some body composition and dietary intake variables
Objective: Compulsive or binge eating is a kind of disturbed eating behavior, which is mostly observed among dieting women, and is integrated with appetite disorder, and uncontrolled eating of plenty of junk food. The Compulsive Eating Scale (CES) created first by Kagan & Squires in 1984, is an eight-item self-reporting instrument that is made to measure the severity of binge eating disorder. The aim of this study was to provide the reliability and validity of the Persian version of Compulsive Eating Scale (CES) among overweight and obese women in Iran. Method: One hundred and twenty six (N = 126) overweight and obese women consented to participate in this study. We estimated the anthropometric indices, including body weight, height, waist and hip circumferences, a total body fat percentage, and visceral fat level with body analyzer all in standard situations. Then, the participants completed the CES. Next, to assess concurrent validity, Beck Depression Inventory, Spielberger anxiety scale, appetite visual analogue rating scale, Food Craving questionnaire, Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire-R18, and Restraint eating visual analogue rating scale were performed simultaneously. To assess test-retest reliability, CES was repeated for all the participants two weeks later. Moreover, we reported the internal consistency and factor analysis of this questionnaire. Furthermore, we estimated the concurrent correlation of CES with logically relevant questionnaires and body composition and anthropometric indices. Results: Based on the reliability analysis and factor analysis of the principal component by Varimax rotation, we extracted two factors: eating because of negative feelings, and overeating. Internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha) of the CES was 0.85 (Cronbach alpha of the factors was 0.85, and 0.74, respectively). The test-retest correlation of the CES was 0.89. Also, the split-half reliability of the questionnaire was established with the correlation coefficient between Sets I and II. The correlation was 0.85. Conclusion: This study provides preliminary support for the reliability and validity of the Persian version of the CES. This instrument would be helpful in measuring the clinical practice and research studies of obesity, appetite and eating disorders reliably and validly
Practical method for optimal rehabilitation of steel frame buildings using buckling restrained brace dampers
A novel optimisation method is developed for optimum strengthening design of 2D multi-story steel moment resisting frames using buckling restrained brace (BRB)dampers and externally welded steel plates in compliance with ASCE 41-06. The proposed method is based on the concept of Uniform Distribution of Deformation (UDD), in which structural materials are redistributed from strong to weak parts of a structure until the material capacity is fully exploited. For the first time, an adaptive power function is introduced to improve the computational efficiency and convergence speed of the UDD optimisation method. The results of the proposed optimisation method are compared with metaheuristic optimisation methods using Genetic Algorithm (GA)and Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO)for a three story and a nine story frame. The demand to capacity ratios of deformation-controlled and force-controlled structural members based on ASCE 41-06 are considered as design constraints in the optimisation process. The results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed optimisation method in finding the optimum design solution with significantly less computational costs (up to 300 times less number of analyses)compared to both GA and PSO methods. It is shown that, in general, a more suitable distribution of dampers is accompanied by a more uniform distribution of demand to capacity ratios, which confirms the concept of UDD optimisation method
Fluconazole resistance Candida albicans in females with recurrent vaginitis and Pir1 overexpression
Background: Some genes may be associated with Candida albicans resistance to azoles. Pir1 gene is described as responsible to induce resistance in C. albicans. Objectives: The current study aimed to find the relationship between fluconazole resistance and Pir1 protein (Pir1p) overexpression in the females with recurrent C. albicans vaginitis requiring longer fluconazole therapy. Patients and Methods: A total of 52l vaginal samples were obtained from the females with C. albicans vaginitis. The azole susceptibility phenotype was determined according to the Clinical Laboratory for Standards Institute (CLSI) protocol for disk diffusion method and inhibition zone for fluconazole. Expression of pir1 gene and fluconazole -resistance were evaluated using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in C. albicans. Results: In the 52 isolates, 49 (94) were resistant to fluconazole. Overexpression of Pir1 gene was detected in 47 (96) fluconazole-resistant C. albicans isolates. Conclusions: The findings show fluconazole -resistance in C. albicans isolates with overexpression of Pir1p. © 2015, Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences
Generalized Chaplygin gas model: Cosmological consequences and statefinder diagnosis
The generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG) model in spatially flat universe is
investigated. The cosmological consequences led by GCG model including the
evolution of EoS parameter, deceleration parameter and dimensionless Hubble
parameter are calculated. We show that the GCG model behaves as a general
quintessence model. The GCG model can also represent the pressureless CDM model
at the early time and cosmological constant model at the late time. The
dependency of transition from decelerated expansion to accelerated expansion on
the parameters of model is investigated. The statefinder parameters and
in this model are derived and the evolutionary trajectories in plane are
plotted. Finally, based on current observational data, we plot the evolutionary
trajectories in and planes for best fit values of the parameters of
GCG model. It has been shown that although, there are similarities between GCG
model and other forms of chaplygin gas in statefinder plane, but the distance
of this model from the CDM fixed point in diagram is shorter
compare with standard chaplygin gas model.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted in Astrophys Space Sci. (2011
