Micro Electromechanical Systems (MEMS) is an area of research and applications that is becoming increasingly popular. One of MEMS device that is becoming increasingly important in a wide range of industries such as the computer industry, the medical industry and the automotive industry is micro relay. Generally, there are three types of micro relay based on actuation methods; electrostatic, electrothermal and electromagnetic. This research project focuses on electromagnetic micro relay. The need to study the magnetic behavior of electromagnetic micro relay is due to ongoing demand in area of micro relay design and fabrication. This study will focus on analyzing the magnetic behaviors of a specific electromagnetic micro relay. It involves the analytical and finite element modeling. The results from these two analyses are compared in order to verify the reliability of results obtained. Prior to the validation, a complete model of micro relay is developed using finite element modeling via ANSYS software. Investigations on magnetic behaviors of the electromagnetic micro relay are performed via Finite Element Analyses. By varying the current density on the EM planar coil on the micro relay structure, the operating principle of electromagnetic micro relay can be simulated and observed. In addition, it also includes the investigation of magnetic torque upon the armature of the micro relay when certain parameters are varied. The parameters are the thickness of the armature, air gap between the permanent magnet and EM planar coil, and the amount of current density applied to EM planar coils. The effect of the parameter's variation are presented and discussed. These results provide a good insight of the magnetic behavior of the investigated electromagnetic micro relay which will be very useful in designing an electromagnetic micro relay

Level of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in selected marine fish (pelagic) from Straits of Malacca

Fish is a good source of protein, supply important vitamins and other essential nutrients including essential fatty acids (EFA), the EPA and DHA which help to reduce risk of death from coronary heart diseases. However, diet and food of animals’ origin are the most predominant sources of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) to human which accounts to over 90%, with fish as one of the major routes of contaminants in human body. PCBs are a group of extremely stable aromatic chlorinated compounds which are relatively resistant to biological degradation and very persistent in the environment. This study has identified the type and level of 12 congeners of PCBs that are most toxic to humans. The maximum permitted level of PCBs in muscles meat of fish and fishery products is 4 pg/g, as recommended by World Health Organization (WHO) using the WHO-TEFs. Meanwhile, the highest amount of PCBs concentration was in Rastrelliger kanagurta (Indian mackerel), with the level of PCBs at 1.37 pg/g wet weight. Other species like Scomberomorus guttatus (Spanish mackerel), Pampus argenteus (Silver pompret), Megalapsis cordyla (Hardtail scad), Eleutheronema tradactylum (Fourfinger threadfin) and Chirocentrus dorab (Dorab wolfherring) showed PCBs levels ranging from 0.35 pg/g to 1.05 pg/g wet weight. Thus, the PCBs in all the samples were below the permitted level. It can be concluded that the studied pelagic fish are safe to consume. Although the levels were not high, it is still important to set limits for the PCBs in fish and shellfish species so as to make a better estimation of the risk of exposure to human through dietary intake of fish, specifically fatty fish to meet nutritional requirement for EPA and DHA

PCDDs and PCDFs in pelagic fish along the straits of Malacca

Fish and shellfish are rich sources of long chain fatty acids, especially DHA and EPA. High consumption of fish helps to elevate the level of these compounds in the body. However, fish also are easily exposed to chemical contaminants, such as dioxins (PCDDs) and furans (PCDFs). Exposure to PCDDs and PCDFs may lead to negative health effects, such as cancer, chloracne, hyperpigmentation and others. Level and type of PCDDs and PCDFs were determined in 20 pelagic fish samples of six different species collected from the Straits of Malacca using HRGC/HRMS. The most toxic congener (2,3,7,8-TCDD) was found in all the samples at a very low level of 0.04-0.05 pg/g sample, except in Spanish mackerel (south-T2) and Indian mackerel (middle-T1). Meanwhile, the level of the total PCDDs and PCDFs ranged from 0.13 pg/g to 0.38 pg/g of the wet weight of the samples. The value of the total PCDDs and PCDFs was in a descending order of Hardtail scad, Spanish mackerel, Indian mackerel, fourfinger threadfin, silver pomfret and dorab wolfherring. Generally, the results of this study indicate that fish and shellfish caught along the Straits of Malacca are safe as in terms of PCDDs and PCDFs levels and the data can serve as baseline information for future monitoring of these organochlorine compounds

Today’s wireless communication systems should be capable to fulfill various insatiable demands for higher data rate and resolutions requirement. In order to satisfy those requirements in UWB system, a lot of antennas that can provide wide bandwidth have been proposed. In this paper, a coplanar stripline (CPS)-fed antenna for ultra-wideband (UWB) application was proposed. This antenna was designed using FR4 board with dielectric constant, r = 4.4, tangent loss, tan = 0.02 and substrate’s thickness, h = 1.6mm. The simulation was done using Computer Technology (CST) software. The simulation result shows that the modified coplanar stripline (CPS)-fed antenna significantly improved the fractional bandwidth by 200 % at frequency range 3.386 GHz -12.943 GHz. The optimal results of this coplanar ultra-wideband antenna were 5.100 GHz, 9.836 GHz and 12.155 GHz with a gain of 2.598 dB, 4.452 dB and 5.383 dB and the return loss of – 46.845 dB, - 23.428 dB and – 13.595 dB

A process prediction model based on cuckoo algorithm for abrasive waterjet machining

    Get PDF
Cuckoo is a new evolutionary algorithm which is inspired by lifestyle of bird family. This study proposes Cuckoo algorithm for prediction of the surface roughness of Abrasive Water Jet (AWJ). Several prediction models with different initial eggs were developed and analyzed to investigate the best predicted surface roughness value. The paired sample t-test was used to demonstrate the validity of the results. Throughout this study, it was evidence that the Cuckoo algorithm could improve machining performances of the AWJ. The result shows that the more initial eggs were considered, a much lower predicted value of surface roughness was obtained. When the initial eggs increase, the value of the best parameters become nearer to the goal point. It was found that Cuckoo algorithm is capable for giving an improved surface roughness as it outperformed the results of two established computational techniques, artificial neural network and support vector machine

    Get PDF
A technology of wireless body area network (WBAN) was invented in order to enhance the quality of healthcare management as well as to determine faster disease prevention. However, to obtain the real-time data of images and videos from inside the human body, an implantable device is required. Currently, the Medical Implant Communication System (MICS) is used, but, this system has limited data rate which is a narrow-band of 402 – 405 MHz. Thus, this study on Ultra Wideband (UWB) for implanted device is conducted as UWB offers a wide transmission bandwidth as well as high data rate. Knowledge of radio wave propagation behaviour inside human body is needed to perform the implantation. Past researches related to this topic are limited and those conducted focused only on the human torso. This paper aims to provide a better understanding on the characteristics of radio wave propagation inside the human body by using an implantable device at UWB frequency. It is also hoped that this study could be used as reference for future research on this subject
