    Using performance measures conceptually in innovation control

    In recent years, companies have been changing their innovation strategies, as they have realized that original new products can offer a major competitive advantage. Therefore, many companies are focusing on a more closely managed product-innovation process, and have consequently increased their use of performance-management frameworks. By doing so, such companies hope to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of their new-product-development activities. Within the performance-management framework, the use of innovation metrics plays an important and beneficial role. For this reason, the present paper investigates the relationship between the design of innovation performance management frameworks and the actual utilization of information obtained from the implemented innovation metrics. We collected data from 133 technology-intensive companies and employed structural equation modeling for empirical analysis. This method allowed us to determine which design factors positively affect the extent to which managers conceptually use innovation metrics. In particular, we investigated how the balance, coherence, adaption, and user know-how of innovation metrics relate to their conceptual use. Our results suggest that balance and user know-how of the metrics improve conceptual use of the performance measures, whereas no effect can be observed regarding coherence and adaption of the metrics. Thus, it seems highly advisable for firms to implement a simple, comprehensible performance management framework, consisting of financial and nonfinancial performance measure

    Determinants of voluntary CSR disclosure: empirical evidence from Germany

    Currently, companies spend a great deal of effort on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) disclosures. CSR disclosure relates to the provision of information on companies' environmental and social performance. From an economic perspective, companies might disclose this information to avoid or decrease potential political costs. We construct a CSR disclosure index based on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines. Using content analysis, we analyze 130 listed German companies' CSR disclosures (470 firm-year observations) to investigate the determinants of these voluntary disclosure activities. Our results show that, consistent with the political cost theory, German companies' disclosures of all CSR issues are affected by their visibility, shareholder structure, and relationship with their US stakeholders. In addition, higher profitability is associated with more environmental disclosures. Finally, size and industry membership affect the amount of CSR disclosure

    Basing care reforms on evidence: The Kenya health sector costing model

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The Government of the Republic of Kenya is in the process of implementing health care reforms. However, poor knowledge about costs of health care services is perceived as a major obstacle towards evidence-based, effective and efficient health care reforms. Against this background, the Ministry of Health of Kenya in cooperation with its development partners conducted a comprehensive costing exercise and subsequently developed the Kenya Health Sector Costing Model in order to fill this data gap.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Based on standard methodology of costing of health care services in developing countries, standard questionnaires and analyses were employed in 207 health care facilities representing different trustees (e.g. Government, Faith Based/Nongovernmental, private-for-profit organisations), levels of care and regions (urban, rural). In addition, a total of 1369 patients were randomly selected and asked about their demand-sided costs. A standard step-down costing methodology was applied to calculate the costs per service unit and per diagnosis of the financial year 2006/2007.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The total costs of essential health care services in Kenya were calculated as 690 million Euros or 18.65 Euro per capita. 54% were incurred by public sector facilities, 17% by Faith Based and other Nongovernmental facilities and 23% in the private sector. Some 6% of the total cost is due to the overall administration provided directly by the Ministry and its decentralised organs. Around 37% of this cost is absorbed by salaries and 22% by drugs and medical supplies. Generally, costs of lower levels of care are lower than of higher levels, but health centres are an exemption. They have higher costs per service unit than district hospitals.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The results of this study signify that the costs of health care services are quite high compared with the Kenyan domestic product, but a major share are fixed costs so that an increasing coverage does not necessarily increase the health care costs proportionally. Instead, productivity will rise in particular in under-utilized private health care institutions. The results of this study also show that private-for-profit health care facilities are not only the luxurious providers catering exclusively for the rich but also play an important role in the service provision for the poorer population. The study findings also demonstrated a high degree of cost variability across private providers, suggesting differences in quality and efficiencies.</p

    Categorical and continuous - disentangling the neural correlates of the carry effect in multi-digit addition

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Recently it was suggested that the carry effect observed in addition involves both categorical and continuous processing characteristics.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In the present study, we aimed at identifying the specific neural correlates associated with processing either categorical or continuous aspects of the carry effect in an fMRI study on multi-digit addition.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In line with our expectations, we observed two distinct parts of the fronto-parietal network subserving numerical cognition to be associated with either one of these two characteristics. On the one hand, the categorical aspect of the carry effect was associated with left-hemispheric language areas and the basal ganglia probably reflecting increased demands on procedural and problem solving processes. Complementarily, the continuous aspect of the carry effect was associated with increased intraparietal activation indicating increasing demands on magnitude processing as well as place-value integration with increasing unit sum.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In summary, the findings suggest representations and processes underlying the carry effect in multi-digit addition to be more complex and interactive than assumed previously.</p

    Ultrafast Structural Dynamics of Photo-Reactions Revealed by Model-Independent X-ray Cross-Correlation Analysis

    We applied angular X-ray Cross-Correlation analysis (XCCA) to scattering images from a femtosecond resolution LCLS X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) pump-probe experiment with solvated PtPOP ([Pt2_2(P2_2O5_5H2_2)4_4]4^{4-}) metal complex molecules. The molecules were pumped with linear polarized laser pulses creating an excited state population with a preferred orientational (alignment) direction. Two time scales of 1.9±1.51.9\pm1.5 ps and 46±1046\pm10 ps were revealed by model-independent XCCA, associated with an internal structural changes and rotational dephasing, respectively. Our studies illustrate the potential of XCCA to reveal hidden structural information in a model independent analysis of time evolution of solvated metal complex molecules.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 50 reference

    Chlamydia pneumoniae Hides inside Apoptotic Neutrophils to Silently Infect and Propagate in Macrophages

    BACKGROUND: Intracellular pathogens have developed elaborate strategies for silent infection of preferred host cells. Chlamydia pneumoniae is a common pathogen in acute infections of the respiratory tract (e.g. pneumonia) and associated with chronic lung sequelae in adults and children. Within the lung, alveolar macrophages and polymorph nuclear neutrophils (PMN) are the first line of defense against bacteria, but also preferred host phagocytes of chlamydiae. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We could show that C. pneumoniae easily infect and hide inside neutrophil granulocytes until these cells become apoptotic and are subsequently taken up by macrophages. C. pneumoniae infection of macrophages via apoptotic PMN results in enhanced replicative activity of chlamydiae when compared to direct infection of macrophages, which results in persistence of the pathogen. Inhibition of the apoptotic recognition of C. pneumoniae infected PMN using PS- masking Annexin A5 significantly lowered the transmission of chlamydial infection to macrophages. Transfer of apoptotic C. pneumoniae infected PMN to macrophages resulted in an increased TGF-ss production, whereas direct infection of macrophages with chlamydiae was characterized by an enhanced TNF-alpha response. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Taken together, our data suggest that C. pneumoniae uses neutrophil granulocytes to be silently taken up by long-lived macrophages, which allows for efficient propagation and immune protection within the human host

    European Respiratory Society Statement on preschool wheezing disorders: updated definitions, knowledge gaps, and proposed future research directions.

    Since the publication of the European Respiratory Society (ERS) Task Force reports on the management of preschool wheezing in 2008 and 2014, a large body of evidence has accumulated suggesting the clinical phenotypes that were proposed, episodic (viral) wheezing and multiple-trigger wheezing, do not relate to underlying airway pathology and may not help determine response to treatment. Specifically, using clinical phenotypes alone may no longer be appropriate, and new approaches that can be used to inform clinical care are needed for future research. This ERS Task Force reviewed the literature published after 2008 related to preschool wheezing and has suggested the criteria used to define wheezing disorders in preschool children should include age of diagnosis (0 to &lt;6 years), confirmation of wheezing on at least one occasion, and more than one episode of wheezing ever.Furthermore, diagnosis and management may be improved by identifying treatable traits, including inflammatory biomarkers (blood eosinophils, aeroallergen sensitisation) associated with type-2 immunity and differential response to inhaled corticosteroids, lung function parameters, and airway infection. However, more comprehensive use of biomarkers/treatable traits in predicting the response to treatment requires prospective validation. There is evidence that specific genetic traits may help guide management, but these must be adequately tested. In addition, the Task Force identified an absence of caregiver-reported outcomes, caregiver/self-management options, and features that should prompt specialist referral for this age group. Priorities for future research include a focus on identifying i) mechanisms driving preschool wheezing, ii) biomarkers of treatable traits and efficacy of interventions in those without allergic sensitisation/eosinophilia, iii) the need to include both objective outcomes and caregiver-reported outcomes in clinical trials, iv) the need for a suitable action plan for children with preschool wheezing and v) a definition of severe/difficult-to-treat preschool wheezing
