    NASA-ARC 91.5-cm airborne infrared telescope

    A 91.5 cm aperture telescope installed aboard NASA-Lockheed C-141A aircraft for the performance of infrared astronomy is described. A unique feature of the telescope is that its entire structure is supported by a 41 cm spherical air bearing which effectively uncouples it from aircraft angular motion, and with inertial stabilization and star tracking, limits tracking errors to less than 1 arc second in most applications. A general description of the system, a summary of its performance, and a detailed description of an offset tracking mechanism is presented

    Alternative communication network designs for an operational Plato 4 CAI system

    The cost of alternative communications networks for the dissemination of PLATO IV computer-aided instruction (CAI) was studied. Four communication techniques are compared: leased telephone lines, satellite communication, UHF TV, and low-power microwave radio. For each network design, costs per student contact hour are computed. These costs are derived as functions of student population density, a parameter which can be calculated from census data for one potential market for CAI, the public primary and secondary schools. Calculating costs in this way allows one to determine which of the four communications alternatives can serve this market least expensively for any given area in the U.S. The analysis indicates that radio distribution techniques are cost optimum over a wide range of conditions

    Breeding latitude predicts timing but not rate of spring migration in a widespread migratory bird in South America

    Identifying the processes that determine avian migratory strategies in different environmental contexts is imperative to understanding the constraints to survival and reproduction faced by migratory birds across the planet. We compared the spring migration strategies of Fork‐tailed Flycatchers (Tyrannus s. savana) that breed at south‐temperate latitudes (i.e., austral migrants) vs. tropical latitudes (i.e., intratropical migrants) in South America. We hypothesized that austral migrant flycatchers are more time‐selected than intratropical migrants during spring migration. As such, we predicted that austral migrants, which migrate further than intratropical migrants, will migrate at a faster rate and that the rate of migration for austral migrants will be positively correlated with the onset of spring migration. We attached light‐level geolocators to Fork‐tailed Flycatchers at two tropical breeding sites in Brazil and at two south‐temperate breeding sites in Argentina and tracked their movements until the following breeding season. Of 286 geolocators that were deployed, 37 were recovered ~1 year later, of which 28 provided useable data. Rate of spring migration did not differ significantly between the two groups, and only at one site was there a significantly positive relationship between date of initiation of spring migration and arrival date. This represents the first comparison of individual migratory strategies among conspecific passerines breeding at tropical vs. temperate latitudes and suggests that austral migrant Fork‐tailed Flycatchers in South America are not more time‐selected on spring migration than intratropical migrant conspecifics. Low sample sizes could have diminished our power to detect differences (e.g., between sexes), such that further research into the mechanisms underpinning migratory strategies in this poorly understood system is necessary.Fil: Jahn, Alex.     Hysteresis loops of Co-Pt perpendicular magnetic multilayers

    We develop a phenomenological model to study magnetic hysteresis in two samples designed as possible perpendicular recording media. A stochastic cellular automata model captures cooperative behavior in the nucleation of magnetic domains. We show how this simple model turns broad hysteresis loops into loops with sharp drops like those observed in these samples, and explains their unusual features. We also present, and experimentally verify, predictions of this model, and suggest how insights from this model may apply more generally.Comment: 4.5 pages, 5 figure

    Performance and Radiation Testing of a Low-Noise Switched Capacitor Array for the CMS Endcap Muon System.

    The 16-channel, 96-cell per channel switched capacitor array ( SCA) ASIC developed at UC Davis for the cathode readout of the cathode strip chambers ( CSC) in the CMS endcap muon system is ready for production. For the final full-sized prototype, the Address Decoder was re-designed and LVDS receivers were incorporated into the chip package. Under precision testing, the chip exhibits excellent linearity within the 1V design range and very low cell-to-cell pedestal variation. Monitored samples of the production design were subjected to exposure to a 63.3 MeV proton beam. The performance of chips after exposures up to 100 krad was within tolerances of an unexposed part

    Estimating oceanic primary production using vertical irradiance and chlorophyll profiles from ocean gliders in the North Atlantic

    An autonomous underwater vehicle (Seaglider) has been used to estimate marine primary production (PP) using a combination of irradiance and fluorescence vertical profiles. This method provides estimates for depth-resolved and temporally evolving PP on fine spatial scales in the absence of ship-based calibrations. We describe techniques to correct for known issues associated with long autonomous deployments such as sensor calibration drift and fluorescence quenching. Comparisons were made between the Seaglider, stable isotope (13C), and satellite estimates of PP. The Seaglider-based PP estimates were comparable to both satellite estimates and stable isotope measurements

    Presence of Putative Repeat-in-Toxin Gene tosA in Escherichia coli Predicts Successful Colonization of the Urinary Tract

    Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) strains, which cause the majority of uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs), carry a unique assortment of virulence or fitness genes. However, no single defining set of virulence or fitness genes has been found in all strains of UPEC, making the differentiation between UPEC and fecal commensal strains of E. coli difficult without the use of animal models of infection or phylogenetic grouping. In the present study, we consider three broad categories of virulence factors simultaneously to better define a combination of virulence factors that predicts success in the urinary tract. A total of 314 strains of E. coli, representing isolates from fecal samples, asymptomatic bacteriuria, complicated UTIs, and uncomplicated bladder and kidney infections, were assessed by multiplex PCR for the presence of 15 virulence or fitness genes encoding adhesins, toxins, and iron acquisition systems. The results confirm previous reports of gene prevalence among isolates from different clinical settings and identify several new patterns of gene associations. One gene, tosA, a putative repeat-in-toxin (RTX) homolog, is present in 11% of fecal strains but 25% of urinary isolates. Whereas tosA-positive strains carry an unusually high number (11.2) of the 15 virulence or fitness genes, tosA-negative strains have an average of only 5.4 virulence or fitness genes. The presence of tosA was predictive of successful colonization of a murine model of infection, even among fecal isolates, and can be used as a marker of pathogenic strains of UPEC within a distinct subset of the B2 lineage

    The Palomar Testbed Interferometer

    The Palomar Testbed Interferometer (PTI) is a long-baseline infrared interferometer located at Palomar Observatory, California. It was built as a testbed for interferometric techniques applicable to the Keck Interferometer. First fringes were obtained in July 1995. PTI implements a dual-star architecture, tracking two stars simultaneously for phase referencing and narrow-angle astrometry. The three fixed 40-cm apertures can be combined pair-wise to provide baselines to 110 m. The interferometer actively tracks the white-light fringe using an array detector at 2.2 um and active delay lines with a range of +/- 38 m. Laser metrology of the delay lines allows for servo control, and laser metrology of the complete optical path enables narrow-angle astrometric measurements.     Astabiotics: Antimicrobial Signal Transduction Activators

    poster abstractThe increasing prevalence of multi-drug resistant Gram-negative bacteria is a major public health concern. All available antibiotics are inhibitors of targets essential for virulence or growth. CpxRA is a highly conserved bacterial signal transduction system that responds to extracytoplasmic membrane stress. CpxA is a sensor with kinase and phosphatase activity; upon activation, CpxA donates a phosphate group to CpxR, activating a transcriptional response. Activation of CpxRA reduces the flow of protein traffic through the cytoplasmic membrane, dramatically reducing the expression of virulence determinants. Activation of CpxRA abolishes the virulence of Salmonella Typhimurium in mice. We found that activation of CpxRA crippled the ability of Haemophilus ducreyi to cause disease in experimentally infected human volunteers. Using an Escherichia coli reporter strain, we developed a high throughput screen to detect compounds that activate CpxRA. In a pilot screen of 36,000 compounds, we identified 1 class of compounds that shifts the equilibrium of CpxA to kinase activity, activating CpxR. Based on its potency, the calculated effective dose of the lead compound (a nitroindole) was 10 mg/kg. Female mice tolerated 100 mg/kg of the nitroindole given twice a day for 3 days. A CpxRA activating mutant constructed in uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) was severely impaired in a murine urinary tract infection model; thus, activation of CpxRA is a valid treatment strategy for UPEC. However, when female mice were challenged with UPEC and treated with 100 mg/kg of the nitroindole using the schedule above, there were no differences in the recovered CFU in the urine, bladder, and kidney of sham and compound-treated mice. Future studies will include medicinal optimization of the nitroindole and identification and optimization other leads that activate CpxRA. Although our pilot test of efficacy was negative, astabiotics have great potential as broad-spectrum, adjunctive therapies to existing antimicrobials for treatment of Gram-negative infections
