    AIMS:The role of adoptive immunotherapy (AIT) for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who have received curative therapy is still not well illustrated. This timely meta-analysis aims to update the current evidence on efficacy and safety of AIT for patients with HCC who have received curative therapy. METHODS:We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus and the Cochrane Library Through January 2017 for relevant studies. Mortality and tumor recurrence were compared between patients with or without adjuvant AIT. The meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.3. RESULTS:Eight studies involving 1861 patients met the eligibility criteria and were meta-analyzed. Adjuvant AIT was associated with significantly lower mortality at 1 year (RR 0.64, 95%CI 0.52-0.79), 3 years (RR 0.73, 95%CI 0.65-0.81) and 5 years (RR 0.86, 95%CI 0.79-0.94). Similarly, adjuvant AIT was associated with significantly lower recurrence rate than curative therapies alone at 1 year (RR 0.64, 95%CI 0.49-0.82), 3 years (RR 0.85, 95%CI 0.79-0.91) and 5 years (RR 0.90, 95%CI 0.85-0.95). Short-term outcomes were confirmed in sensitivity analyses based on randomized trials or choice of random- or fixed-effect meta-analysis model. None of the included patients experienced grade 4 adverse events. CONCLUSIONS:This timely meta-analysis confirms the evidence that adjuvant AIT for patients with HCC after curative treatment lowers risk of mortality and tumor recurrence

    Robust ferromagnetism of single crystalline CoxZn1−xO (0.3 ≤ x ≤ 0.45) epitaxial films with high Co concentration

    In contrast to conventional dilute magnetic semiconductors with concentrations of magnetic ions of just a few percent, here, we report the fabrication of epitaxial Cox Zn 1− xO single crystalline films with Co concentrations from x = 0.3 up to 0.45 by radio-frequency oxygen-plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. The films retain their single crystalline wurtzite structure without any other crystallographic phase from precipitates, based on reflection high energy electron diffraction, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and Raman scattering. The results of X-ray diffraction, optical transmission spectroscopy, and in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirm the incorporation of Co2+ cations into the wurtzite lattice. The films exhibit robust ferromagnetism and the magneto-optical Kerr effect at room temperature. The saturation magnetization reaches 265 emu/cm3 at x = 0.45, which corresponds to the average magnetic moment of 1.5 μB per Co atom

    Delayed wet season increases soil net N mineralization in a seasonally tropical forest

    Seasonal precipitation regime plays a vital role in regulating nutrient dynamics in seasonally dry tropical forests. Present evidence suggests that not only wet season precipitation is increasing in the tropics of South China, but also that the wet season is occurring later. However, it is unclear how nutrient dynamics will respond to the projected precipitation regime changes. We assessed the impacts of altered seasonal precipitation on soil net N mineralization in a secondary tropical forest. Since 2013, by reducing throughfall and/or irrigating experimental plots, we delayed the wet season by two months from April–September to June–November (DW treatment) or increased mean annual precipitation by 25% in July and August (WW treatment). We measured soil net N mineralization rates and assessed soil microbial communities in January, April, August and November in 2015 and 2017. We found that a wetter wet season did not significantly affect soil microbes or net N mineralization rates, even in the mid-wet season (August) when soil water content in the WW treatment increased significantly. By contrast, a delayed wet season enhanced soil microbial biomass and altered microbial community structure, resulting in a two-fold increase in net N mineralization rates relative to controls in the early dry season (November). Structural equation modeling showed that the changes in net N mineralization during the early dry season were associated with altered soil microbial communities, dissolved organic N, and litterfall, which were all affected by enhanced soil water content. Our findings suggest that a delayed wet season could have a greater impact on N dynamics than increased precipitation during the wet season. Changes in the seasonal timing of rainfall might therefore influence the functioning of seasonally dry tropical forests

    In Vivo Measurement of Brain GABA Concentrations by Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy in Smelters Occupationally Exposed to Manganese

    Background: Exposure to excessive manganese (Mn) levels is known to induce psychiatric and motor disorders including parkinsonian symptoms. Therefore finding a reliable means for early detection of Mn neurotoxicity is desirable. Objectives: Our goal was to study whether in-vivo brain levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), N-acetylaspartate (NAA) and other brain metabolites in smelters were altered as a consequence of Mn exposure. Methods: T1-weighted MRI was used to visualize Mn deposition in the brain. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) was used to quantify concentrations of NAA, glutamate and other brain metabolites in globus pallidus, putamen, thalamus, and frontal cortex from a well-established cohort of 10 male Mn-exposed smelters and 10 male age-matched control subjects. The MEGA-PRESS MRS sequence was used to determine GABA levels in a region encompassing the thalamus and adjacent parts of the basal ganglia ("GABA-VOI"). Results: Seven out of ten exposed subjects showed clear T1-hyperintense signals in the globus pallidus indicating Mn accumulation. We found a significant increase (82%; p=0.014) of GABA/tCr in the GABA-VOI of Mn-exposed subjects, as well as a distinct decrease (9%, p=0.04) of NAA/tCr in frontal cortex that strongly correlated (R= - 0.93, p<0.001) with cumulative Mn exposure. Conclusions: We demonstrated elevated GABA levels in the thalamus and adjacent basal ganglia and decreased frontal cortex NAA levels, indicating neuronal dysfunction in a brain area not primarily targeted by Mn. Therefore, the non-invasive in vivo MRS measurement of GABA and NAA may prove to be a powerful tool for detecting presymptomatic effects of Mn neurotoxicity

    A simulation study on the measurement of D0-D0bar mixing parameter y at BES-III

    We established a method on measuring the \dzdzb mixing parameter yy for BESIII experiment at the BEPCII e+e−e^+e^- collider. In this method, the doubly tagged ψ(3770)→D0D0‾\psi(3770) \to D^0 \overline{D^0} events, with one DD decays to CP-eigenstates and the other DD decays semileptonically, are used to reconstruct the signals. Since this analysis requires good e/πe/\pi separation, a likelihood approach, which combines the dE/dxdE/dx, time of flight and the electromagnetic shower detectors information, is used for particle identification. We estimate the sensitivity of the measurement of yy to be 0.007 based on a 20fb−120fb^{-1} fully simulated MC sample.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure

    Effect of silicate on arsenic fractionation in soils and its accumulation in rice plants

    Four rice genotypes, two hybrid and two indica, were selected to investigate the effects of silicate (Si) application on arsenic (As) accumulation and speciation in rice and As fractionation in soil. There were significant differences in root, straw and grain biomass among genotypes (p < 0.05), and Si application significantly increased root (p < 0.05) and grain biomass (p < 0.001). Silicate addition reduced the proportion of As associated with well-crystallized hydrous oxides of Fe and Al and residual phases, whilst increasing the proportions of specifically-sorbed As and As associated with amorphous and poorly-crystalline Fe and Al hydrous oxides. Furthermore, the results indicated that the fraction proportions of non-specifically sorbed, specifically-sorbed, and associated with amorphous and poorly-crystalline hydrous oxides of Fe and Al in rhizosphere soils, were greater than non-rhizosphere soils. Silicate application had a significant effect decreasing total As concentrations in root (p < 0.005), straw (p < 0.05) and husk (p < 0.001) of rice plants. The effect of Si on reducing As accumulation in rice leaves was revealed by SXRF. Indica genotypes transported and accumulated less As than hybrid genotypes. Both percentage and concentration of iAs were lower in indica genotype XFY-9 than in hybrid genotype XWX-12. Silicate reduced iAs and DMA by 21% and 58% in grain (polished) respectively. DMA may have a greater translocation capacity from straw to grain (polished) than inorganic As. The study provides the potential for understanding As uptake mechanisms in rice and mitigating the health risks posed by As contamination in paddy fields

    Reliable Detection of Paternal SNPs within Deletion Breakpoints for Non-Invasive Prenatal Exclusion of Homozygous α0-Thalassemia in Maternal Plasma

    Reliable detection of large deletions from cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA) in maternal plasma is challenging, especially when both parents have the same deletion owing to a lack of specific markers for fetal genotyping. In order to evaluate the efficacy of a non-invasive prenatal diagnosis (NIPD) test to exclude α-thalassemia major that uses SNPs linked to the normal paternal α-globin allele, we established a novel protocol to reliably detect paternal SNPs within the (−−SEA) breakpoints and performed evaluation of the diagnostic potential of the protocol in a total of 67 pregnancies, in whom plasma samples were collected prior to invasive obstetrics procedures in southern China. A group of nine SNPs identified within the deletion breakpoints were scanned to select the informative SNPs in each of the 67 couples DNA by multiplex PCR based mini-sequencing technique. The paternally inherited SNP allele from cffDNA was detected by allele specific real-time PCR. A protocol for reliable detection of paternal SNPs within the (−−SEA) breakpoints was established and evaluation of the diagnostic potential of the protocol was performed in a total of 67 pregnancies. In 97% of the couples one or more different SNPs within the deletion breakpoint occurred between paternal and maternal alleles. Homozygosity for the (−−SEA) deletion was accurately excluded in 33 out of 67 (49.3%, 95% CI, 25.4–78.6%) pregnancies through the implementation of the protocol. Protocol was completely concordant with the traditional reference methods, except for two cases that exhibited uncertain results due to sample hemolysis. This method could be used as a routine NIPD test to exclude gross fetal deletions in α-thalassemia major, and could further be employed to test for other diseases due to gene deletion

    Epidermal Growth Factor Gene Polymorphism and Risk of Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Meta-Analysis

    BACKGROUND: Hepatocarcinogenesis is a complex process that may be influenced by many factors, including polymorphism in the epidermal growth factor (EGF) gene. Previous work suggests an association between the EGF 61*A/G polymorphism (rs4444903) and susceptibility to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but the results have been inconsistent. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis of several studies covering a large population to address this controversy. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, Google Scholar and the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure databases were systematically searched to identify relevant studies. Data were abstracted independently by two reviewers. A meta-analysis was performed to examine the association between EGF 61*A/G polymorphism and susceptibility to HCC. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated. RESULTS: Eight studies were chosen in this meta-analysis, involving 1,304 HCC cases (1135 Chinese, 44 Caucasian and 125 mixed) and 2,613 controls (1638 Chinese, 77 Caucasian and 898 mixed). The EGF 61*G allele was significantly associated with increased risk of HCC based on allelic contrast (OR = 1.29, 95% CI = 1.16-1.44, p<0.001), homozygote comparison (OR = 1.79, 95% CI = 1.39-2.29, p<0.001) and a recessive genetic model (OR = 1.34, 95% CI = 1.16-1.54, p<0.001), while patients carrying the EGF 61*A/A genotype had significantly lower risk of HCC than those with the G/A or G/G genotype (A/A vs. G/A+G/G, OR = 0.66, 95% CI = 0.53-0.83, p<0.001). CONCLUSION: The 61*G polymorphism in EGF is a risk factor for hepatocarcinogenesis while the EGF 61*A allele is a protective factor. Further large and well-designed studies are needed to confirm this conclusion
