    Invazivnost rebraša Mnemiopsis leidyi A. Agassiz, 1865, najčešće uvedenim balastnim vodama, zajedno s pritiskom ribarstva ima potencijal restrukturiranja morskog ekosustava. U sjevernom Jadranu, važnoj ribarskoj regiji, rebraš M. leidyi pojavio se putem balastnih voda u značajnom broju 2016. godine u velikoj brojnosti tijekom ljeta i jeseni. Cilj ovog rada bio je opisati biometrijske karakteristike, metabolizam i prisutnost populacije rebraša M. leidyi u akvatoriju Rovinja od 2016. do 2018. godine. Zabilježena je godišnja periodična frekvencija pojave M. leidyi u akvatoriju Rovinja koja prati dinamiku populacija zooplanktona sjevernog Jadrana s maksimalnom prosječnom abudancijom od 20 jedinki po m3 tijekom ljetno-jesenskog razdoblja. Rezultati eksperimenta potrošnje kisika i gubitka mase rebraša M. leidyi ukazuju na otpornost populacije na zimske uvjete sjevernog Jadrana i potencijalno dugoročno preživljavanje vrste u istom. 50 % jedinki rebraša M. leidyi u eksperimentalnim uvjetima izgladnjivanja na temperaturi od 8 °C ima može preživjeti 17 dana. Rebraš M. leidyi kompeticijom i predacijom uz pritisak ribarstva predstavlja direktnu prijetnju sjevernojadranskoj populaciji inćuna. Ovaj rad ukazuje na potrebitost dodatnih istraživanja i monitoringa populacije M. leidyi sjevernog Jadrana.The invasiveness of the ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi A. Agassiz, 1865, mostly introduced by the balast waters, together with the fisheries pressure has potential to reconstruct the marine ecosystem. In the northern Adriatic, the important fishery region, ctenophore M. leidyi was introduced by ballast water and it reached the significant abundance in the 2016 during the summer-fall period. The aim of the paper was to describe the biometric characteristic, the metabolism and the presence of the population of M. leidyi in the coastal waters of Rovinj from 2016 to 2018. In coastal waters of Rovinj, with the average maximum abundance of 20 individuals per m3, the annual periodical presence of the ctenophore M. leidyi which followed dynamic of the northern Adriatic zooplankton was recorded. Results of the experiment, the oxygen consumption and the loss of mass, showed the resistance of the population M. leidyi towards the winter conditions in the northern Adriatic and the potential of the species long term survival. The 50 % of the ctenophore M. leidyi individuals in the starvation experiment conditions showed survival of the 17 days period at the temperature of the 8 °C. The fisheries pressure with the competition and predation of the ctenophore M. leidyi represents the direct threat for the northern Adriatic anchovy population. This paper implies the necessity for the additional research and the monitoring of the northern Adriatic ctenophore M. leidyi population

    Distribution, diet and relationships of the invasive ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi with anchovies and zooplankton, in the northeastern Adriatic Sea

    Blooms of invasive ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi can have massive consequences on fish stocks and marine food webs. The distribution, abundance and diet of this ctenophore were investigated in the northeastern (NE) Adriatic between 2016 and 2019. The abundance of M. leidyi was determined daily along the coast of Rovinj (Croatia), and its spatial distribution monitored by visual census from research vessels and by pelagic trawl during acoustic surveys in September of each year. Mesozooplankton samples were collected along the western coast of Istria by vertical tows from the bottom to the surface. Spatial distribution and abundance of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) assemblages were determined by geo-referenced hydro-acoustic sampling using a scientific echosounder. Large swarms of M. leidyi covering several km2 were regularly reported between July and November extending up to 25 NM from the western coast of the Istrian peninsula and reaching maximum offshore densities of 270 individuals per m2. The abundance of anchovy in the areas where M. leidyi was present evidently decreased. The content of M. leidyi’s digestive tract and plankton samples consisted both mainly of cladocerans, copepods, pteropods, echinodermata and bivalvia larvae. Results indicate that M. leidyi may accumulate and increase its abundance in the stagnant and trophically rich areas of the northern Adriatic gyres, spreading to the surrounding larger areas with currents. We assume that M. leidyi presence correlates with a decrease in anchovy population due to competition for food (zooplankton). Our findings support the importance of implementing an international monitoring program throughout the Adriatic Sea and demonstrate the ability of current MEDIAS surveys to detect changes in the pelagic ecosystem throughout surveyed areas

    Potentially toxic diatoms of the genus Pseudo-nitzschia are present in the phytoplankton community of the Adriatic Sea throughout the year, but in the majority of studies identified only to the genus level. The goals of this study was to determine the species composition and morphometric characteristics of the genus Pseudo-nitzschia in the area of Mali Ston Bay (southern Adriatic) from September to December 2022 using scanning electron microscope, and to describe, determine and compare the morphological characteristics of Pseudo-nitzschia species isolated in laboratory cultures from different aquaculture areas of the central and southern Adriatic by light and scanning electron microscopy. A total of 24 laboratory monocultures were analyzed and seven species were determined: Pseudo-nitzschia calliantha, P. cf. delicatissima, P. galaxiae, P. mannii, P. multistriata, P. pseudodelicatissima/cuspidata, and P. subfraudulenta. The analysis of field samples in the Mali Ston Bay revealed seven toxic species P. calliantha, P. cf. delicatissima, P. galaxiae, P. lundholmiae, P. mannii, P. pseudodelicatissima/cuspidata, and P. subfraudulenta. During the study, a change in the species composition of the genus Pseudo-nitzschia was recorded. The species P. pseudodelicatissima/cuspidata predominated in September and October, P. galaxiae in November, while P. subfraudulenta in December 2022. S područja Malostonskog zaljeva i laboratorijskih monokultura s četiri područja duž srednjeg i južnog Jadrana u razdoblju od rujna do prosinca 2022 napravljena je morfološka analiza stanica vrsta roda Pseudo-nitzchia.
