    Allergic diseases in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Abstract Background Reports of frequent manifestation of allergic diseases in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have been the subject of mounting clinical interest. However, evidence supporting the association between ADHD and allergies is inconsistent and has yet to be systematically reviewed. The objective of this study was to compile and assess available studies on the association between ADHD and allergic diseases in children. Methods A comprehensive search using MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane library, and CINAHL databases was completed in 23 November 2015. The inclusion criteria for studies were that the research assessed allergic diseases in children, 18 years of age and younger, with a diagnosis of ADHD and that a distinct comparison group was incorporated. Any comparative studies, encompassing both randomized controlled trials and observational studies, were considered for inclusion. Two review authors independently assessed the quality of the selected studies by the use of validated assessment tools, performed data extraction and conducted meta-analysis according to Cochrane Collaboration guidelines. Results Five eligible studies were included in this systematic review. Of these studies, three were case-control and two were cross sectional studies. A majority of information from the five studies was classified as having low or unclear risk of bias. The meta-analysis showed an association between children with ADHD and asthma compared with the control groups (OR: 1.80, 95% CI: 1.57 - 2.07; five studies, low quality of evidence), but did not indicate an association between food allergy and ADHD (OR: 1.13, 95% CI: 0.88 - 1.47; three studies very low quality of evidence). The odds of experiencing allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, and allergic conjunctivitis were slightly higher in children with ADHD compared with control groups, though a substantial statistical heterogeneity was notable in the overall effect estimates. Conclusions The findings from this review and meta-analysis show that children with ADHD are more likely to have asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, and allergic conjunctivitis than their counterparts. Interventions including strategies for managing allergies in children with ADHD would be beneficial

    Increased Susceptibility to LPS-induced Endotoxin Shock in Secretory Leukoprotease Inhibitor (SLPI)-deficient Mice

    Secretory leukoprotease inhibitor (SLPI) protects tissue against the destructive action of neutrophil elastase at the site of inflammation. Recent studies on new functions of SLPI have demonstrated that SLPI may play a larger role in innate immunity than merely as a protease inhibitor. To clarify the functions of SLPI in bacterial infections, we generated SLPI-deficient mice (SLPI−/− mice) and analyzed their response to experimental endotoxin shock induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). SLPI−/− mice showed a higher mortality from endotoxin shock than did wild type mice. This may be explained in part by our observation that SLPI−/− macro-phages show higher interleukin 6 and high-mobility group (HMG)-1 production and nuclear factor κB activities after LPS treatment than do SLPI+/+ macrophages. SLPI also affects B cell function. SLPI−/− B cells show more proliferation and IgM production after LPS treatment than SLPI+/+ B cells. Our results suggest that SLPI attenuates excessive inflammatory responses and thus assures balanced functioning of innate immunity

    Microwave rapid heating system using carbon heating tube

    [EN] We report a microwave heating system with a carbon heating tube (CHT) made by a 4-mm diameter quartz tube filled carbon particles and Ar gas at 1400 Pa. 2.45-GHz microwave at 200 W was introduced to a 300-dimameter metal cavity, in which 60-mm-long CHT was set at the central position. The numerical simulation with a finite element moment method resulted in the standing wave of the electric field caused by three dimensional Fresnel interference effect with low high electric field intensity ranging from from 1 to 6 kV/m because of effective absorption of microwave power by the CHT. The lowest average electrical field intensity of 5 kV/m in the cavity space was given by the electrical conductivity of carbon ranging from 10 to 55 S/m. The CHT with 55 S/m heated to 1200oC by microwave irradiation at 200 W. This heating method was applied to activate 1.0x1015-cm-2 boron and phosphorus implanted regions in n-type crystalline silicon substrate to fabricate pn junction and solar cells. The CHT heating at 1200oC realized decrease in the sheet resistivity to 146 Ω/sq, decrease in the density of defect states to 1.3x1011 and 9.2x1010 cm-2 for boron (p+) and phosphorus (n+) implanted surfaces, and solar cell characteristic with a conversion efficiency of 15% under illumination of air mass 1.5 at 0.1 W/cm2.Sameshima, T.; Kikuchi, T.; Uehara, T.; Arima, T.; Hasumi, M.; Miyazaki, T.; Kobayashi, G....     Classification of Primary Hepatolithiasis According to Morphology of the Liver, Especially Atrophy of Hepatic Parenchyma

    One hundred twenty one patients with primary hepatolithiasis (PHL) was encountered for the last 7 years. In order to elucidate how to follow and treat PHL, PHL was classified into five types (I-V) on the basis of morphological findings obtained by CT. It depends mainly on the presence of atrophy of hepatic parenchyma (AHP) and dilatation of intrahepatic bile ducts (DIBD). Methods of treatment were selected for each patient according to the classification. Type I patients comprised of 43.8% in observation group. These patient were asymptomatic and just followed since neither APH nor DIBD were observed. The remaining patients in the observation group, operation was refused or contraindicated. Most of them were asymptomatic. Surgical treatments were done on 47 patients (hepatic resection in 32 patients, surgical lithotomy in 10 and others in 5). In Type III, IV and V, hepatic resection was often performed to remove all of stones and bile stasis since improvement in hepatic function could not be expected in view of AHP. All patients were followed-up 79 months or less. In the surgically terated patients, recurrence was not observed. In observation group, no new symptome developed during the follow-up period. It was suggested, therefore, that the present classification of PHL was helpful in determining therapeutic strategy for PHL

    Structural basis for the adaptation and function of chlorophyll f in photosystem I

    Chlorophylls (Chl) play pivotal roles in energy capture, transfer and charge separation in photosynthesis. Among Chls functioning in oxygenic photosynthesis, Chl f is the most red-shifted type first found in a cyanobacterium Halomicronema hongdechloris. The location and function of Chl f in photosystems are not clear. Here we analyzed the high-resolution structures of photosystem I (PSI) core from H. hongdechloris grown under white or far-red light by cryo-electron microscopy. The structure showed that, far-red PSI binds 83 Chl a and 7 Chl f, and Chl f are associated at the periphery of PSI but not in the electron transfer chain. The appearance of Chl f is well correlated with the expression of PSI genes induced under far-red light. These results indicate that Chl f functions to harvest the far-red light and enhance uphill energy transfer, and changes in the gene sequences are essential for the binding of Chl f
