    Standard isotrivial fibrations with pg = q = 1, II

    A smooth, projective surface S is called a standard isotrivial fibration if there exists a finite group G which acts faithfully on two smooth projective curves C and F so that S is isomorphic to the minimal desingularization of T {colon equals} (C × F) / G. Standard isotrivial fibrations of general type with pg = q = 1 have been classified in [F. Polizzi, Standard isotrivial fibrations with pg = q = 1, J. Algebra 321 (2009),1600-1631] under the assumption that T has only Rational Double Points as singularities. In the present paper we extend this result, classifying all cases where S is a minimal model. As a by-product, we provide the first examples of minimal surfaces of general type with pg = q = 1, KS2 = 5 and Albanese fibration of genus 3. Finally, we show with explicit examples that the case where S is not minimal actually occurs. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

    Assessment of lightweight concrete properties under cryogenic temperatures: influence on the modulus of elasticity

    The current development of Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) storage site requires a thorough analysis of concrete behaviour under cryogenic temperatures. Indeed, this kind of infrastructure is based on a set of tanks that presents several layers. The first one is the cryogenic steel tank that directly contains the LNG. An outer concrete box represents the external layer and usually between these two layers there is a thermal insulating material. A leak from the steel tank can apply a tremendous thermal gradient to the concrete external layer. Thus, the study of concrete behaviour in this situation is important and few studies are available for concrete characterized by lightweight clay aggregate. In this experimental work, the variation of the modulus of elasticity of lightweight clay aggregate concrete, due to temperature gradients have been analyzed and discussed. A set of concrete cubes has been immersed in liquid nitrogen to reach -180°C, then they have been tested under compressive stress measuring both stress and strains. Correlations between elastic properties and temperatures are proposed

Knowledge of the 3D model will give the opportunity to study the deformation and quantify the damages. Three case studies are presented relating to damaged and/or unsafe buildings: Sivillier Castle (Villasor - Sardinia- Italy), the Bell Tower of Mores (Sardinia-Italy) and industrial building (Cagliari - Italy). The first two cases concern buildings of historical and architectural importance that present a state of compromised conservation; the last, an industrial building compromised by fire. In all cases, a laser scanner survey was carried out that not only provided valuable information but also highlighted structural metric deformation and degradation

    Surgical management of retraction pockets: Does mastoidectomy have a role?

    Introduction Retraction pocket is a condition in which the eardrum lies deeper within the middle ear. Its management has no consensus in literature. Objective To assess the role of mastoidectomy in the management of retraction pockets added to a tympanoplasty. Methods Prospective study of patients with retraction pocket and referred to surgery. The patients were randomly assigned to two groups: one managed with tympanoplasty and mastoidectomy and the other group with tympanoplasty only. The minimum follow-up considered was 12 months. The outcomes were: integrity of eardrum, recurrence, and hearing status. Results This study included 43 patients. In 24 cases retraction occurred in the posterior half of the eardrum, and in 19 patients there was clinical evidence of ossicular interruption. The two groups of treatment were composed by: 21 patients that underwent tympanoplasty with mastoidectomy and 22 patients had only tympanoplasty. One case of the first group had a recurrence. In 32 cases patients follow up was longer than 48 months. The average air-bone gap changed from 22.1 dB to 5 dB. The percentage of air-bone gap improvement was assessed at 60% in those patients treated with mastoidectomy, and 64.3% in those without it (p > 0.5). Conclusion Tympanoplasty and ossiculoplasty should be considered to treat atelectatic middle ear and ossicular chain interruption. Mastoidectomy as a way to increase air volume in the ear seems to be a paradox; it does not add favorable prognostic factor to management of retraction pockets

    Message handling system concepts and services in a land mobile satellite system

    A network architecture containing the capabilities offered by the Message Handling System (MHS) to the PRODAT Land Mobile Satellite System (LMSS) is described taking into account the constraints of a preexisting satellite system which is going to become operational. The mapping between MHS services and PRODAT requirements is also reported and shows that the supplied performance can be significantly enhanced to both fixed and mobile users. The impact of the insertion of additional features on the system structure, especially on the centralized control unit, are also addressed

    We give a survey on the fundamental group of surfaces isogenous to a higher product. If the surfaces are regular, e.g. if they are Beauville surfaces, the first homology group is a finite group.     Vulnerability assessment of concrete bridges using different methods of visual inspection

    This paper shows the comparisons between different methods of visual inspection used in European Countries. These methodologies are applied to the deck bridge located near Cagliari, along the SS 195 road to Capoterra. From a strategic point of view, this structure plays a key role ensuring a direct connection to different structures related to industrial and local productions and to an important touristic district. This is a prestressed concrete bridge in an aggressive marine environment, which in October 2008 was hit by a flood that caused subsidence in the foundations. The aim of our inspection is to obtain a real measure of the vulnerability through different procedures and to determine which is the best method able to give objective results

    Photo-oxidative and soil burial degradation of irrigation tubes based on biodegradable polymer blends

    Irrigation tubes based on biodegradable polymers were prepared via an extrusion-drawing process by Irritec and compared to conventional pipes made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). A commercial polylactide/poly (butyleneadipate-co-butyleneterephthalate) (PLA/PBAT) blend (Bio-Flex®) and Mater-Bi® were used. The polymers were characterized from rheological and mechanical points of view. Irrigation pipes were subjected to photoaging with continued exposure to UV radiation up to 22 days. The degradability in the soil of irrigation tube samples was studied. The influence of temperature and UV irradiation on soil burial degradation was investigated. A soil burial degradation test was carried out at 30 °C and 50 °C for up to 70 days. The degree of degradation was evaluated from the weight loss percentage. The degradation rate of irrigation tube samples based on Mater-Bi® was higher at 30 °C and was stimulated after 14 days of UV irradiation. Higher temperatures or UV aging encouraged the disintegration in soil of Bio-Flex®-based irrigation tubes.     Development of chorda tympani taste responses in rat

    To learn whether neurophysiological taste responses change during structural development of the gustatory system, we recorded from the chorda tympani nerve in rats aged 7 to 92 days after birth. Chemical stimuli applied to the anterior tongue included four monochloride salts, two acids, sucrose, and urea. Responses to all chemicals were obtained as early as 7 days postnatally. Developmental changes in salt, acid, and sucrose responses were observed. Relative to NaCl and LiCl, NH 4 Cl and KCl gradually decrease in effectiveness as taste stimuli; or, relative to NH 4 Cl and KCl, NaCl and LiCl become more effective stimuli. These changes are similar to those observed prenatally and postnatally in sheep. Also, relative to NaCl, citric acid, hydrochloric acid, and sucrose become less effective stimuli; or, NaCl becomes more effective as a stimulus, relative to these acids and sucrose. The period of most rapid functional change overlaps a period of rapid structural change. It seems most reasonable to hypothesize that the altering taste responses reflect developmental changes in receptor membrane composition.     An additive model to predict the rheological and mechanical properties of polypropylene blends made by virgin and reprocessed components

    In this work, an additive model for the prediction of the rheological and mechanical properties of monopolymer blends made by virgin and reprocessed components is proposed. A polypropylene sample has been reprocessed more times in an extruder and monopolymer blends have been prepared by simulating an industrial process. The scraps are exposed to regrinding and are melt reprocessed before mixing with the virgin polymer. The reprocessed polymer is, then, subjected to some thermomechanical degradation. Rheological and mechanical experimental data have been compared with the theoretical predictions. The results obtained showed that the values of this simple additive model are a very good fit for the experimental values of both rheological and mechanical properties
