Global behavior of the Ricci flow on generalized flag manifolds with two isotropy summands
AbstractIn this paper, we study the global behavior of the Ricci flow equation for two classes of homogeneous manifolds with two isotropy summands. Using methods of the qualitative theory of differential equations, we present the global phase portrait of such systems and derive some geometrical consequences on the structure of such manifolds under the action of the Ricci flow
The Ricci flow of left invariant metrics on full flag manifold SU(3)/T from a dynamical systems point of view
In this paper we study the behavior of the Ricci flow at infinity for the
full flag manifold using techniques of the qualitative theory of
differential equations, in special the Poincar\'e Compactification and Lyapunov
exponents. We prove that there are four invariant lines for the Ricci flow
equation, each one associated with a singularity corresponding to a Einstein
metric. In such manifold, the bi-invariant normal metric is Einstein. Moreover,
around each invariant line there is a cylinder of initial conditions such that
the limit metric under the Ricci flow is the corresponding Einstein metric; in
particular we obtain the convergence of left-invariant metrics to a
bi-invariant metric under the Ricci flow.Comment: 8 pages. Accepted for publication in the Bulletin des Sciences

Exposure to anime as motivation for learning Japanese language and culture in Portugal
Posteriormente, as
Outside of Japan, the term "anime" refers specifically to Japanese animation. The
penetration of anime into the US market began in 1961. Subsequently, popular Japanese
animations continued to be imported until the early 1980s, with greater diversity and
scale, and eventually reached Europe.
The aim of this dissertation is to carry out an analysis of the factors that influence
the interest of Portuguese people in learning the Japanese language and culture. For this
purpose, a cultural product of relatively recent dissemination in Europe, anime, is
selected, and its inclusion is studied as another element of the entertainment of younger
age groups and as an incentive to approach Japanese culture, including the language.
A combined methodology was used to reach the conclusion, i.e., quantitative and
qualitative. To collect quantitative data an online questionnaire was conducted with a
valid sample of 526 respondents. Regarding qualitative data, ten Japanese language
professors were interviewed. This data showed that Japanese popular culture is indeed
one of the main motivations for learning the Japanese language and culture and allows us
to conclude that anime can also be used as a teaching tool.
The use of popular culture is a valuable way to acquire knowledge and is
something that must always be considered for implementation in formal education. With
this in mind, further consideration should be given to, for example, studying noncanonical
authors and works and making efficient use of popular culture as a learning
tool
Stomach cancer incidence in Southern Portugal 1998-2006:a spatio-temporal analysis
Understanding geographical differences in health, particularly in small areas, became
a major concern of epidemiologists. Geographical association studies and, more recently, several spatial disease mapping studies have emerged due to the development of new spatial statistical tools.
Among other diseases, these methods are being applied to analyze cancer data. However, in this kind of studies, it is of utmost importance to also investigate the influence of temporal variability and that is why spatio-temporal studies became so popular. The aim of this study is to investigate spatial and temporal trends for the incidence of this type of cancer. This retrospective population-based study is based on data on all stomach cancers registered by the Southern Portuguese Cancer Registry (ROR Sul) between 1998 and 2006. Because several studies have underlined the important role of socioeconomic status in cancer risk, information on this variable has also been taken into account. Bayesian hierarchical models were applied to model stomach incidence at a county level and resulting relative risks were used to build risk maps for cancer incidence. Age-Period-Cohort models were also applied.N/
