In his first autobiographical writing, the Austrian author Thomas Bernhard attempts to show his public the reason why he became the provocative writer and outsider that he was. This paper intends to analyse how this image is constructed in the book by using a specific concept of victim as well as a provocative and subjective style. On the one hand he is successful in constructing a text in which his point of view and his personality are constantly present; on the other hand it includes diverse contradictions, which will be discussed throughout this article

Thesis (M.Sc.D.)--Boston University, Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, 2001 (Biomaterials).Includes bibliographic references (leaves 62-64).In-Ceram is an all-ceramic restorative material with improved resistance to crack propagation. Ceramics of various compositions are widely used as restorative materials in dentistry. In-Ceram has an alumina core that is infiltrated with glass to achieve a high strength substructure that can support crowns and bridges. This material belongs to the class of interpenetrating phase materials. The objective of this study was to determine flexural strength and fracture toughness of the alumina core infiltrated with resin, glass, and resin/glass combined, as well as to evaluate crack propagation through different layers of the material. Four-point flexural strength values of bend bars were 355.54 [plus or minus] 49.83 MPa for In-Ceram infused glass, 245.1 [plus or minus] 18.62 MPa for In-Ceram infused resin, 21.41 [plus or minus] 3.5 MPa for In-Ceram sintered alumina and 278.2 [plus or minus] 26.94 MPa for In-Ceram infused glass and resin (dual infused). Fracture toughness values were 3.20 MPa.m[1/2] for In-Ceram infused glass with 5 Kg load applied and 10.56 MPa.m[1/2] for In-Ceram infused resin with 20 Kg load applied. SEM evaluation indicated inhibition of crack propagation throughout the layers of glass and resin of a dual infused sample, when the crack was initiated on the glass infused layer

Ceramide is a Mediator of Apoptosis in Retina Photoreceptors

PURPOSE. The precise mechanisms involved in photoreceptor apoptosis are still unclear. We here investigated the role of ceramide, a sphingolipid precursor that induces apoptosis upon cellular stress, in activating this death in photoreceptors. METHODS. Rat retina neuronal cultures, with or without docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), were treated with the ceramide analog acetylsphingosine (C2-ceramide), and with a glucosylceramide synthase inhibitor. Ceramide synthesis in cultures treated with the oxidant paraquat was evaluated with [3H]palmitate. The effect of inhibitors of ceramide de novo synthesis, fumonisin B1 and cycloserine, on photoreceptor apoptosis was investigated. Apoptosis, mitochondrial membrane potential and Bcl-2 expression were determined. RESULTS. Addition of C2-ceramide induced photoreceptor apoptosis. Paraquat increased formation of [3H]ceramide in photoreceptors, compared to controls, while inhibition of ceramide synthesis, immediately before paraquat treatment, prevented paraquat-induced photoreceptor apoptosis. Fumonisin also reduced photoreceptor apoptosis during early development in vitro. DHA, the retina major polyunsaturated fatty acid, which protects photoreceptors from oxidative stress-induced apoptosis, completely blocked C2-ceramide-induced photoreceptor death, simultaneously increasing Bcl-2 expression. Inhibiting glucosylceramide synthase, which catalyzes ceramide glucosylation, before ceramide or paraquat treatment blocked DHA protective effect. CONCLUSIONS. Our results suggest that oxidative stress stimulated an increase in ceramide levels, which induced photoreceptor apoptosis. DHA prevented oxidative stress and ceramide damage by up regulating Bcl-2 expression and glucosylating ceramide, thus decreasing its intracellular concentration. This shows for the first time that ceramide is a critical mediator for triggering photoreceptor apoptosis in mammalian retina and suggests that modulating ceramide levels might provide a therapeutic tool for preventing photoreceptor death in neurodegenerative diseases.Fil: German, Olga Lorena. Information management and exponencial learning in Society 5.0: foundations for an integrated system

Humanity uses the information to reduce discomfort, effort, and errors. With this in mind, headphones were invented, so that the music could be heard without disturbing others; home appliances were created to reduce the effort in washing dishes or clothes, and calculating machines were developed so that human distraction would not cause an accident in calculating the weight that a bridge could support. But the information has hardly changed the certainties and doubts about which university course to take, what the individual's daily life will be like in the academic path, which includes when and what to study, what to eat and what to do in their free time. Is there a hobby that the individual could enjoy, but does not know? There is greater access to information, but many times instead of navigating this information, the individual sinks in the middle of it. In addition, teachers and students remain stuck in the curriculum, with the same menu being provided for carnivores, vegetarians, or lactose intolerants. If before, students were beaten with wood in their hands and were attacked psychologically, having to learn the same as everyone else, nowadays only hands are no longer suffering from wood, at least in theory. Reducing mistakes in choosing a higher education course and the whole life that governs the academic path, can be a dream for many individuals, and software that collects enough information to learn about the individual and guide him/her on the beginning of their academic path could be an extremely useful compass. Knowing which university course to take, which discipline, among the electives, to choose, knowing the right time to get up according to the circadian cycle, what to do throughout the day, what and when to eat, are all informational outputs that utopian software could provide so as to contribute to the individual's success. But would such informational management drastically reduce the hassles, efforts, and mistakes to be made, or would it negatively affect the individual's life due to lack of experience with failure? Is the information learned from failure really necessary for success? This article starts from a brief history about information in education, analyses information management in Society 5.0, in the era of exponential technologies, and the construction of competence matrices. The goal is to start a debate about the delegation and trust in software, the management of personal information for individual success.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Cognitive reserve mediates the severity of certain neuropsychological deficits related to cocaine use disorder

Introduction: The concept of cognitive reserve (CR) is being considered in the field of substance use disorder (SUD) by observing that there are individuals whose brain alterations are not related to the cognitive symptomatology they present. Aims: Our aims were to characterise the possible neuropsychological deficits in a sample of subjects with SUD compared to a control group and to determine whether the degree of CR is a mediator in the cognitive functioning of these patients. Methods: To perform these objectives, the study involved a sample of subjects with SUD in outpatient treatment and a control group. A CR questionnaire and a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment were administered, and we also collected data related to drug consumption and psychological well-being. Results: The SUD group showed poorer performance compared to the control group in several cognitive domains (attention, declarative memory, executive functions and emotional perception), as well as in psychological comfort. Interestingly, we observed that the deficits found in attention, declarative memory and executive functions were mediated by the CR level of the participants, an effect that we did not observe in the rest of the variables registered. Conclusion: Our results suggest that long-term drug consumption leads to cognitive deficits and affects the psychological well-being of the subjects. Moreover, the CR should be taken into account during the assessment and rehabilitation of patients with SUD due to its protective role against certain neuropsychological deficits.Universidad de Málaga.
