Shape Fluctuations of a Droplet Containing a Polymer
We consider the problem of an ideal polymer confined in a droplet. When the
droplet radius is smaller than the (unconfined) polymer radius of gyration, the
polymer entropy will depend on the droplet shape. We compute the resulting
surface free energy. Using parameters appropriate for polymers confined in
microemulsions, we find that the polymer and bending surface energies are
comparable for the lowest modes. Finally, we argue that chain self-avoidance
will decrease the strength of the polymer contribution to the surface energy.Comment: Revtex, 12 pages, one figur
Impacts of Protected Areas on Local Livelihoods in Cambodia
SummaryImpact evaluation methods (mixed effects models and matching) were used to investigate the effect of protected areas (PAs) on poverty and livelihoods in Cambodia, comparing households inside PAs with bordering villages and controls. There was no evidence that PAs exacerbated local poverty or reduce agricultural harvests in comparison with controls. Households bordering the PAs were significantly better off due to greater access to markets and services. Non-timber forest product (NTFP) collectors inside PAs were significantly better off than controls and had greater rice harvests, because they had more secure access to land and forest resources. The PAs in Cambodia therefore have some positive impacts on households that use forest and land resources for their livelihoods
Structure of bottle-brush brushes under good solvent conditions. A molecular dynamics study
We report a simulation study for bottle-brush polymers grafted on a rigid
backbone. Using a standard coarse-grained bead-spring model extensive molecular
dynamics simulations for such macromolecules under good solvent conditions are
performed. We consider a broad range of parameters and present numerical
results for the monomer density profile, density of the untethered ends of the
grafted flexible backbones and the correlation function describing the range
that neighboring grafted bottle-brushes are affected by the presence of the
others due to the excluded volume interactions. The end beads of the flexible
backbones of the grafted bottle-brushes do not access the region close to the
rigid backbone due to the presence of the side chains of the grafted
bottle-brush polymers, which stretch further the chains in the radial
directions. Although a number of different correlation lengths exist as a
result of the complex structure of these macromolecules, their properties can
be tuned with high accuracy in good solvents. Moreover, qualitative differences
with "typical" bottle-brushes are discussed. Our results provide a first
approach to characterizing such complex macromolecules with a standard bead

Fluctuations of a driven membrane in an electrolyte
We develop a model for a driven cell- or artificial membrane in an
electrolyte. The system is kept far from equilibrium by the application of a DC
electric field or by concentration gradients, which causes ions to flow through
specific ion-conducting units (representing pumps, channels or natural pores).
We consider the case of planar geometry and Debye-H\"{u}ckel regime, and obtain
the membrane equation of motion within Stokes hydrodynamics. At steady state,
the applied field causes an accumulation of charges close to the membrane,
which, similarly to the equilibrium case, can be described with renormalized
membrane tension and bending modulus. However, as opposed to the equilibrium
situation, we find new terms in the membrane equation of motion, which arise
specifically in the out-of-equilibrium case. We show that these terms lead in

Strong-Segregation Theory of Bicontinuous Phases in Block Copolymers
We compute phase diagrams for starblock copolymers in the
strong-segregation regime as a function of volume fraction , including
bicontinuous phases related to minimal surfaces (G, D, and P surfaces) as
candidate structures. We present the details of a general method to compute
free energies in the strong segregation limit, and demonstrate that the gyroid
G phase is the most nearly stable among the bicontinuous phases considered. We
explore some effects of conformational asymmetry on the topology of the phase

One- and two-particle microrheology
We study the dynamics of rigid spheres embedded in viscoelastic media and
address two questions of importance to microrheology. First we calculate the
complete response to an external force of a single bead in a homogeneous
elastic network viscously coupled to an incompressible fluid. From this
response function we find the frequency range where the standard assumptions of
microrheology are valid. Second we study fluctuations when embedded spheres
perturb the media around them and show that mutual fluctuations of two
separated spheres provide a more accurate determination of the complex shear
modulus than do the fluctuations of a single sphere.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Experimental Study of Parametric Autoresonance in Faraday Waves
The excitation of large amplitude nonlinear waves is achieved via parametric
autoresonance of Faraday waves. We experimentally demonstrate that phase
locking to low amplitude driving can generate persistent high-amplitude growth
of nonlinear waves in a dissipative system. The experiments presented are in

Bigraphical Refinement
We propose a mechanism for the vertical refinement of bigraphical reactive
systems, based upon a mechanism for limiting observations and utilising the
underlying categorical structure of bigraphs. We present a motivating example
to demonstrate that the proposed notion of refinement is sensible with respect
to the theory of bigraphical reactive systems; and we propose a sufficient
condition for guaranteeing the existence of a safety-preserving vertical
refinement. We postulate the existence of a complimentary notion of horizontal
refinement for bigraphical agents, and finally we discuss the connection of

The 2015 Sheffield System for Longitudinal Diarisation of Broadcast Media
Speaker diarisation is the task of answering "who spoke when" within a multi-speaker audio recording. Diarisation of broadcast media typically operates on individual television shows, and is a particularly difficult task, due to a high number of speakers and challenging background conditions. Using prior knowledge, such as that from previous shows in a series, can improve performance. Longitudinal diarisation allows to use knowledge from previous audio files to improve performance, but requires finding matching speakers across consecutive files. This paper describes the University of Sheffield system for participation in the 2015 Multi-Genre Broadcast (MGB) challenge. The challenge required longitudinal diarisation of data from BBC archives, under very constrained resource settings. Our system consists of three main stages: speech activity detection using DNNs with novel adaptation and decoding methods; speaker segmentation and clustering, with adaptation of the DNN-based clustering models; and finally speaker linking to match speakers across shows. The final result on the development set of 19 shows from five different television series provided a Diarisation Error Rate of 50.77% in the diarisation and linking task
