UNDERSTANDING THE RURAL - URBAN DIGITAL DIVIDE

    Get PDF
This paper explains the current "digital divide" in internet use between rural and urban areas using a Logit adoption model with data collected from the August 2000 Current Population Survey. A non-linear decomposition shows that rural urban household attribute differences account for 66 percent of the digital divide, while place based differences account for the remaining 34 percent of the divide.Research and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies,

The Role of Infrastructure in the Rural - Urban Digital Divide

    Get PDF
A significant gap exists in the percentage of rural and urban households that connect to the Internet. Furthermore, this "digital divide" has been increasing with respect to high-speed connections. The primary course of action to address this emerging high-speed digital divide has been to subsidize digital communications technology (DCT) infrastructure. This paper explores the diffusion of DCT infrastructure in both rural and urban areas over the period 2000 - 2003, and estimates its contribution to the emerging divide in high-speed access. The findings suggest that the rural - urban high-speed divide is more strongly associated with differences in household characteristics like education and income than differences in infrastructure.Research and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies,

Accuracy in UAS GPS Coordinates in Response To Speed

    Get PDF
The purpose of this experiment was to find how much of a difference in GPS accuracy on a UAS system in relation to speed there was (if any) in comparison to an absolute (1-2 cm accuracy) known location provided by a ground station. We began by placing identification makers in a straight line, setting up a TopCon ground station and positioning each of them to an absolute GPS coordinate, and flying a Mavic Pro UAS with GPS positioning abilities over each of the identification markers. After many runs at different hover times, speed and altitude, we found that the GPS coordinates from the UAS would not match with the absolute location of the TopCon

Does the Nebraska Livestock Friendly County Program Affect Livestock Expansion in the State?

    Get PDF
Livestock production in Nebraska is a very essential part of the state’s economy with cash receipts from all livestock and products valued at $11.9 billion in 2013 (NDA 2015b). The Livestock Friendly County Program (LFCP) was instituted by the Nebraska Legislature in 2003 to further promote livestock development in the state. This thesis examines whether the program has had its intended impact for both cattle and hog farms. The analysis draws on the theory of long-run competitive equilibrium as a guide for the specification of the cattle and hog models. Three alternative specifications of the models using different sets of control variables are used as a test for the robustness of the effect of LFCP. Results show that while LFCP was robustly statistically significant and positively associated with cattle farm numbers across the three specifications of the model, it was robustly positively associated with hog farm numbers but statistically insignificant. This may be due to counties having more stringent regulations for hog farms despite the livestock friendly designation. Advisors: Azzeddine Azzam and Kate Brook

    Three O\u27Clock Prayer

    Get PDF
The Three O’Clock Prayer is deeply rooted in the Marianist tradition. It encourages members of the Marianist family to reflect on Jesus’ passion, the role of Mary in that event, and the ongoing mission of the Church to continue to bring the message of God’s love to the world. It recalls the hour when Jesus, on Calvary, gave Mary as mother to his beloved disciple, John, and asked him to take her into his home. It reminds us of the mystery of the spiritual maternity of Mary and the invitation to live as a child of Mary and to take her into our hearts. It is a spiritual reunion for the Marianist family. Lord Jesus, we gather in spirit at the foot of the Cross with your mother and the disciple whom you loved. We ask your pardon for our sins, which are the cause of your death. We thank you for remembering us in that hour of salvation and for giving us Mary as our mother. Holy Virgin, take us under your protection and open us to the action of the Holy Spirit. St. John, obtain for us the grace of taking Mary into our lives, as you did and of assisting her in her mission. May the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit be glorified in all places through the Immaculate Virgin Mary. Amen

Junior secondary school students' conceptions about plate tectonics

    Get PDF
There are ongoing calls for research that identifies students' conceptions about geographical phenomena. In response, this study investigates junior secondary school students' (N=95) conceptions about plate tectonics. Student response data was generated from semi-structured interviews-about-instances and a two-tiered multiple-choice test instrument developed and validated by the researchers. There were three main findings: (1) students held many alternative conceptions about plate tectonics, most of which have not been reported in previous research; (2) students' alternative conceptions most commonly concerned the formation of landforms at tectonic plate boundaries; and (3) students were especially confused about the cause of subduction at an oceanic-continental convergent plate boundary. The findings of this study can assist geography teachers and researchers to develop innovative pedagogies that consider students' pre instructional alternative conceptions and promote conceptual change learning

    Working More But Staying Poor

    Get PDF
Families living in poverty increasingly contain adults with a strong attachment to the workforce. These families are not, however, the traditional target of public assistance programs. This policy brief high- lights research results from a comprehensive portrait of working families living in poverty, both nationally and in the rural south, using data from the An- nual Demographic Files of the Current Population Survey. Three issues are explored. First, what are the characteristics of working poor families and how have they changed over time? Second, what role does public assistance play in the coping strategies of working families? Third, how can public assistance programs be better tailored to address the needs of working poor families
