Research requirements to reduce maintenance costs of civil helicopters
The maintenance problems faced by the operators of civil helicopters that result in high costs are documented. Existing technology that can be applied to reduce maintenance costs and research that should be carried out were identified. Good design practice and application of existing technology were described as having a significant impact on reducing maintenance costs immediately. The research and development that have potential for long range reduction of maintenance costs are presented
Linear law for the logarithms of the Riemann periods at simple critical zeta zeros
Each simple zero 1/2 + iγn of the Riemann zeta function on the critical line with γn > 0 is a center for the flow s˙ = ξ(s) of the Riemann xi function with an associated period Tn. It is shown that, as γn →∞, log Tn ≥ π/4 γn + O(log γn).
Numerical evaluation leads to the conjecture that this inequality can be replaced by an equality. Assuming the Riemann Hypothesis and a zeta zero separation conjecture γn+1 − γn≥ γn-θ for some exponent θ > 0, we obtain the upper bound log Tn ≤ γn2 + θ Assuming a weakened form of a conjecture of Gonek, giving a bound for the reciprocal of the derivative of zeta at each zero, we obtain the expected upper bound for the periods so, conditionally, log Tn = π/ 4 γn +O(log γn). Indeed, this linear relationship is equivalent to the given weakened conjecture, which implies the zero separation conjecture, provided the exponent is sufficiently large. The frequencies corresponding to the periods relate to natural eigenvalues for the Hilbert–Polya conjecture. They may provide a goal for those seeking a self-adjoint operator related to the Riemann hypothesis
Immigration Labor and Workplace Safety
Using standard as well as recently developed univariate and bivariate count data models, this
paper analyzes the determinants of workplace accidents using a firm data set for Germany.
Given the tight system of public workplace safety regulation, introduced partly as early as in
1869, and the important role of foreign labor in manufacturing, the focus is on the impact of
work organization and interdependence between native and foreign workers. The empirical
results indicate that there are no significant differences between natives and foreign workers
regarding technological determinants of workplace accidents. However, the employment of
guestworkers has a strong positive effect on the job safety of natives. The estimates imply that
a 1 percent increase in the employment of guestworkers is associated with a 0.4 percent
decrease of severe accidents of natives
Breast Cancer Risk in Relation to the Interval Between Menopause and Starting Hormone Therapy
Background: Although breast cancer risk is greater in users of estrogen-progestin than estrogen-only formulations of menopausal hormonal therapy, reports on their effects have been somewhat inconsistent. We investigated whether the timing of these therapies affected breast cancer incidence. Methods: A total of 1 129 025 postmenopausal UK women provided prospective information on hormonal therapy use and other factors relevant for breast cancer risk. We used Cox regression to estimate adjusted relative risks (RRs) of breast cancer in hormonal therapy users vs never users and calculated standardized incidence rates. All statistical tests were two-sided. Results: During 4.05 million woman-years of follow-up, 15 759 incident breast cancers occurred, with 7107 in current users of hormonal therapy. Breast cancer incidence was increased in current users of hormonal therapy, returning to that of never users a few years after use had ceased. The relative risks for breast cancer in current users were greater if hormonal therapy was begun before or soon after menopause than after a longer gap (Pheterogeneity <. 001, for both estrogen-only and estrogen-progestin formulations). Among current users of estrogen-only formulations, there was little or no increase in risk if use began 5 years or more after menopause (RR = 1.05, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.89 to 1.24), but risk was statistically significantly increased if use began before or less than 5 years after menopause (RR = 1.43, 95% CI = 1.35 to 1.51). A similar pattern was observed among current users of estrogen-progestin formulations (RR = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.38 to 1.70, and RR = 2.04, 95% CI = 1.95 to 2.14, respectively). At 50-59 years of age, annual standardized incidence rates for breast cancer were 0.30% (95% CI = 0.29% to 0.31%) among never users of hormone therapy and 0.43% (95% CI = 0.42% to 0.45%) and 0.61% (95% CI = 0.59% to 0.64%), respectively, among current users of estrogen-only and estrogen-progestin formulations who began use less than 5 years after menopause. Conclusions: There was substantial heterogeneity in breast cancer risk among current users of hormonal therapy. GDR Feeding of the Highly-Deformed Band in 42Ca
The gamma-ray spectra from the decay of the GDR in the compound nucleus
reaction 18O+28Si at bombarding energy of 105 MeV have been measured in an
experiment using the EUROBALL IV and HECTOR arrays. The obtained experimental
GDR strength function is highly fragmented, with a low energy (10 MeV)
component, indicating a presence of a large deformation and Coriolis effects.
In addition, the preferential feeding of the highly-deformed band in 42Ca by

High Spectral Resolution Measurement of the Sunyaev–Zel'dovich Effect Null with Z-Spec
The Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect spectrum crosses through a null where ΔT_CMB = 0 near ν_0 = 217 GHz. In a cluster of galaxies, ν0 can be shifted from the canonical thermal SZ effect value by corrections to the SZ effect scattering due to the properties of the inter-cluster medium. We have measured the SZ effect in the hot galaxy cluster RX J 1347.5 – 1145 with Z-Spec, an R ~ 300 grating spectrometer sensitive between 185 and 305 GHz. These data comprise a high spectral resolution measurement around the null of the SZ effect and clearly exhibit the transition from negative to positive ΔT_CMB over the Z-Spec band. The SZ null position is measured to be ν_0 = 225.8 ± 2.5(stat.) ± 1.2(sys.) GHz, which differs from the canonical null frequency by 3.0σ and is evidence for modifications to the canonical thermal SZ effect shape. Assuming the measured shift in ν0 is due only to relativistic corrections to the SZ spectrum, we place the limit kT_e = 17.1 ± 5.3 keV from the zero-point measurement alone. By simulating the response of the instrument to the sky, we are able to generate likelihood functions in {y_0, T_e, v_pec} space. For v_pec = 0 km s^(–1), we measure the best-fitting SZ model to be y_0 = 4.6^(+0.6)_(–0.9) × 10^(–4), T_e, 0 = 15.2^(+12)_(–7.4) keV. When v pec is allowed to vary, a most probable value of v_pec = + 450 ± 810 km s^(–1) is found
A high-frequency study of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect morphology in galaxy clusters
High-frequency, high-resolution imaging of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect
is an important technique to study the complex structures of the atmospheres of
merging galaxy clusters. Such observations are sensitive to the details of the
electron spectrum. We show that the morphology of the SZ intensity maps in
simulated galaxy clusters observed at 345 GHz, 600 GHz, and 857 GHz are
significantly different because of SZ relativistic corrections. These
differences can be revealed by high-resolution imaging instruments.
We calculate relativistically corrected SZ intensity maps of a simulated,
massive, merging galaxy cluster and of the massive, merging clusters 1E0657-558
(the Bullet Cluster) and Abell 2219. The morphologies of the SZ intensity maps
are remarkably different between 345 GHz and 857 GHz for each merging cluster.
We show that high-resolution imaging observations of the SZ intensity maps at
these frequencies, obtainable with the LABOCA and HERSCHEL-SPIRE instruments,
allow to fully exploit the astrophysical relevance of the predicted SZ

Can electron distribution functions be derived through the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect?
Measurements of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (hereafter SZ) effect distortion of
the cosmic microwave background provide methods to derive the gas pressure and
temperature of galaxy clusters. Here we study the ability of SZ effect
observations to derive the electron distribution function (DF) in massive
galaxy clusters.
Our calculations of the SZ effect include relativistic corrections considered
within the framework of the Wright formalism and use a decomposition technique
of electron DFs into Fourier series. Using multi-frequency measurements of the
SZ effect, we find the solution of a linear system of equations that is used to
derive the Fourier coefficients; we further analyze different frequency samples
to decrease uncertainties in Fourier coefficient estimations.
We propose a method to derive DFs of electrons using SZ multi-frequency
observations of massive galaxy clusters. We found that the best frequency
sample to derive an electron DF includes high frequencies =375, 600, 700,
857 GHz. We show that it is possible to distinguish a Juttner DF from a
Maxwell-Bolzman DF as well as from a Juttner DF with the second electron
population by means of SZ observations for the best frequency sample if the
precision of SZ intensity measurements is less than 0.1%. We demonstrate by
means of 3D hydrodynamic numerical simulations of a hot merging galaxy cluster
that the morphologies of SZ intensity maps are different for frequencies
=375, 600, 700, 857 GHz. We stress that measurements of SZ intensities at
these frequencies are a promising tool for studying electron distribution
