Eigenlogic: a Quantum View for Multiple-Valued and Fuzzy Systems
We propose a matrix model for two- and many-valued logic using families of
observables in Hilbert space, the eigenvalues give the truth values of logical
propositions where the atomic input proposition cases are represented by the
respective eigenvectors. For binary logic using the truth values {0,1} logical
observables are pairwise commuting projectors. For the truth values {+1,-1} the
operator system is formally equivalent to that of a composite spin 1/2 system,
the logical observables being isometries belonging to the Pauli group. Also in
this approach fuzzy logic arises naturally when considering non-eigenvectors.
The fuzzy membership function is obtained by the quantum mean value of the
logical projector observable and turns out to be a probability measure in
agreement with recent quantum cognition models. The analogy of many-valued
logic with quantum angular momentum is then established. Logical observables
for three-value logic are formulated as functions of the Lz observable of the
orbital angular momentum l=1. The representative 3-valued 2-argument logical
observables for the Min and Max connectives are explicitly obtained.Comment: 11 pages, 2 table
Selective Metal Cation Capture by Soft Anionic Metal-Organic Frameworks via Drastic Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Transformations
In this paper we describe a novel framework for the discovery of the topical
content of a data corpus, and the tracking of its complex structural changes
across the temporal dimension. In contrast to previous work our model does not
impose a prior on the rate at which documents are added to the corpus nor does
it adopt the Markovian assumption which overly restricts the type of changes
that the model can capture. Our key technical contribution is a framework based
on (i) discretization of time into epochs, (ii) epoch-wise topic discovery
using a hierarchical Dirichlet process-based model, and (iii) a temporal
similarity graph which allows for the modelling of complex topic changes:
emergence and disappearance, evolution, and splitting and merging. The power of
the proposed framework is demonstrated on the medical literature corpus
concerned with the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) - an increasingly important
research subject of significant social and healthcare importance. In addition
to the collected ASD literature corpus which we will make freely available, our
contributions also include two free online tools we built as aids to ASD
researchers. These can be used for semantically meaningful navigation and
searching, as well as knowledge discovery from this large and rapidly growing

Joining the conspiracy? Negotiating ethics and emotions in researching (around) AIDS in southern Africa
AIDS is an emotive subject, particularly in southern Africa. Among those who have been directly affected by the disease, or who perceive themselves to be personally at risk, talking about AIDS inevitably arouses strong emotions - amongst them fear, distress, loss and anger. Conventionally, human geography research has avoided engagement with such emotions. Although the ideal of the detached observer has been roundly critiqued, the emphasis in methodological literature on 'doing no harm' has led even qualitative researchers to avoid difficult emotional encounters. Nonetheless, research is inevitably shaped by emotions, not least those of the researchers themselves. In this paper, we examine the role of emotions in the research process through our experiences of researching the lives of 'Young AIDS migrants' in Malawi and Lesotho. We explore how the context of the research gave rise to the production of particular emotions, and how, in response, we shaped the research, presenting a research agenda focused more on migration than AIDS. This example reveals a tension between universalised ethics expressed through ethical research guidelines that demand informed consent, and ethics of care, sensitive to emotional context. It also demonstrates how dualistic distinctions between reason and emotion, justice and care, global and local are unhelpful in interpreting the ethics of research practice
Mathematical modelling long-term effects of replacing Prevnar7 with Prevnar13 on invasive pneumococcal diseases in England and Wales
England and Wales recently replaced the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) with its 13-valent equivalent (PCV13), partly based on projections from mathematical models of the long-term impact of such a switch compared to ceasing pneumococcal conjugate vaccination altogether. A compartmental deterministic model was used to estimate parameters governing transmission of infection and competition between different groups of pneumococcal serotypes prior to the introduction of PCV13. The best-fitting parameters were used in an individual based model to describe pneumococcal transmission dynamics and effects of various options for the vaccination programme change in England and Wales. A number of scenarios were conducted using (i) different assumptions about the number of invasive pneumococcal disease cases adjusted for the increasing trend in disease incidence prior to PCV7 introduction in England and Wales, and (ii) a range of values representing serotype replacement induced by vaccination of the additional six serotypes in PCV13. Most of the scenarios considered suggest that ceasing pneumococcal conjugate vaccine use would cause an increase in invasive pneumococcal disease incidence, while replacing PCV7 with PCV13 would cause an overall decrease. However, the size of this reduction largely depends on the level of competition induced by the additional serotypes in PCV13. The model estimates that over 20 years of PCV13 vaccination, around 5000–62000 IPD cases could be prevented compared to stopping pneumococcal conjugate vaccination altogether. Despite inevitable uncertainty around serotype replacement effects following introduction of PCV13, the model suggests a reduction in overall invasive pneumococcal disease incidence in all cases. Our results provide useful evidence on the benefits of PCV13 to countries replacing or considering replacing PCV7 with PCV13, as well as data that can be used to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of such a switch
Impacts of Co-Solvent Flushing on Microbial Populations Capable of Degrading Trichloroethylene
With increased application of co-solvent flushing technologies for removal of nonaqueous phase liquids from groundwater aquifers, concern over the effects of the solvent on native microorganisms and their ability to degrade residual contaminant has also arisen. This study assessed the impact of ethanol flushing on the numbers and activity potentials of trichloroethylene (TCE)-degrading microbial populations present in aquifer soils taken immediately after and 2 years after ethanol flushing of a former dry cleaners site. Polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed soluble methane monooxygenase genes in methanotrophic enrichments, and 16S rRNA analysis identified Methylocystis parvus with 98% similarity, further indicating the presence of a type II methanotroph. Dissimilatory sulfite reductase genes in sulfate-reducing enrichments prepared were also observed. Ethanol flushing was simulated in columns packed with uncontaminated soils from the dry cleaners site that were dosed with TCE at concentrations observed in the field; after flushing, the columns were subjected to a continuous flow of 500 pore volumes of groundwater per week. Total acridine orange direct cell counts of the flushed and nonflushed soils decreased over the 15-week testing period, but after 5 weeks, the flushed soils maintained higher cell counts than the nonflushed soils. Inhibition of methanogenesis by sulfate reduction was observed in all column soils, as was increasing removal of total methane by soils incubated under methanotrophic conditions. These results showed that impacts of ethanol were not as severe as anticipated and imply that ethanol may mitigate the toxicity of TCE to the microorganisms
Permeabilised skeletal muscle reveals mitochondrial deficiency in malignant hyperthermia-susceptible individuals
Background: Individuals genetically susceptible to malignant hyperthermia (MH) exhibit hypermetabolic reactions when exposed to volatile anaesthetics. Mitochondrial dysfunction has previously been associated with the MH-susceptible (MHS) phenotype in animal models, but evidence of this in human MH is limited.
Methods: We used high resolution respirometry to compare oxygen consumption rates (oxygen flux) between permeabilised human MHS and MH-negative (MHN) skeletal muscle fibres with or without prior exposure to halothane. A substrate-uncoupler-inhibitor titration protocol was used to measure the following components of the electron transport chain under conditions of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) or after uncoupling the electron transport system (ETS): complex I (CI), complex II (CII), CI+CII and, as a measure of mitochondrial mass, complex IV (CIV).
Results: Baseline comparisons without halothane exposure showed significantly increased mitochondrial mass (CIV, P=0.021) but lower flux control ratios in CI+CII(OXPHOS) and CII(ETS) of MHS mitochondria compared with MHN (P=0.033 and 0.005, respectively) showing that human MHS mitochondria have a functional deficiency. Exposure to halothane triggered a hypermetabolic response in MHS mitochondria, significantly increasing mass-specific oxygen flux in CI(OXPHOS), CI+CII(OXPHOS), CI+CII(ETS), and CII(ETS) (P=0.001–0.012), while the rates in MHN samples were unaltered by halothane exposure.
Conclusions: We present evidence of mitochondrial dysfunction in human MHS skeletal muscle both at baseline and after halothane exposure
Methane storms as a driver of Titan's dune orientation
Titan's equatorial regions are covered by eastward propagating linear dunes.
This direction is opposite to mean surface winds simulated by Global Climate
Models (GCMs), which are oriented westward at these latitudes, similar to trade
winds on Earth. Different hypotheses have been proposed to address this
apparent contradiction, involving Saturn's gravitational tides, large scale
topography or wind statistics, but none of them can explain a global eastward
dune propagation in the equatorial band. Here we analyse the impact of
equinoctial tropical methane storms developing in the superrotating atmosphere
(i.e. the eastward winds at high altitude) on Titan's dune orientation. Using
mesoscale simulations of convective methane clouds with a GCM wind profile
featuring superrotation, we show that Titan's storms should produce fast
eastward gust fronts above the surface. Such gusts dominate the aeolian
transport, allowing dunes to extend eastward. This analysis therefore suggests
a coupling between superrotation, tropical methane storms and dune formation on
Titan. Furthermore, together with GCM predictions and analogies to some
terrestrial dune fields, this work provides a general framework explaining
several major features of Titan's dunes: linear shape, eastward propagation and
poleward divergence, and implies an equatorial origin of Titan's dune sand.Comment: Published online on Nature Geoscience on 13 April 201
Focused labeled proof systems for modal logic
International audienceFocused proofs are sequent calculus proofs that group inference rules into alternating positive and negative phases. These phases can then be used to define macro-level inference rules from Gentzen's original and tiny introduction and structural rules. We show here that the inference rules of labeled proof systems for modal logics can similarly be described as pairs of such phases within the LKF focused proof system for first-order classical logic. We consider the system G3K of Negri for the modal logic K and define a translation from labeled modal formulas into first-order polarized formulas and show a strict correspondence between derivations in the two systems, i.e., each rule application in G3K corresponds to a bipole—a pair of a positive and a negative phases—in LKF. Since geometric axioms (when properly polarized) induce bipoles, this strong correspondence holds for all modal logics whose Kripke frames are characterized by geometric properties. We extend these results to present a focused labeled proof system for this same class of modal logics and show its soundness and completeness. The resulting proof system allows one to define a rich set of normal forms of modal logic proofs
Integrating a Global Induction Mechanism into a Sequent Calculus
Most interesting proofs in mathematics contain an inductive argument which
requires an extension of the LK-calculus to formalize. The most commonly used
calculi for induction contain a separate rule or axiom which reduces the valid
proof theoretic properties of the calculus. To the best of our knowledge, there
are no such calculi which allow cut-elimination to a normal form with the
subformula property, i.e. every formula occurring in the proof is a subformula
of the end sequent. Proof schemata are a variant of LK-proofs able to simulate
induction by linking proofs together. There exists a schematic normal form
which has comparable proof theoretic behaviour to normal forms with the
subformula property. However, a calculus for the construction of proof schemata
does not exist. In this paper, we introduce a calculus for proof schemata and
prove soundness and completeness with respect to a fragment of the inductive
arguments formalizable in Peano arithmetic.Comment: 16 page
