Contrasting human perceptions of and attitudes towards two threatened small carnivores, Lycalopex fulvipes and Leopardus guigna, in rural communities adjacent to protected areas in Chile

Indexación: Scopus.The interaction between humans and small carnivores is a phenomenon especially frequent in rural fringes, as is the case of communities surrounding natural areas. In Chile, two species of threatened carnivores, the Darwin's Fox and the Guigna, have increased their contact with humans due to human-induced changes in their habitat. The objective of this study was to characterize the interactions of these species with humans by assessing human perceptions and attitudes toward them, and to assess livestock and poultry ownership and management practices in local communities to evaluate their possible roles in the phenomenon. We conducted semi-structured interviews in rural communities adjacent to natural protected areas of two different regions in southern Chile. We found that people have a more positive perception of Darwin's Foxes than Guignas, but both species are considered damaging due to poultry attacks. Livestock and poultry management was generally deficient. Large quantum nonlinear dynamic susceptibility of single-molecule magnets

The nonlinear dynamical response of Mn$_{12}$ single-molecule magnets is experimentally found to be very large, quite insensitive to the spin-lattice coupling constant, and displaying peaks reversed with respect to classical superparamagnets. It is shown that these features are caused by the strong field dependence of the relaxation rate due to the detuning of energy levels between which tunneling takes place. The nonlinear susceptibility technique, previously overlooked, is thus proposed as a privileged probe to ascertain the occurrence of quantum effects in mesoscopic magnetic systems.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Conductas sociocomunicativas de los nativos digitales y los jóvenes en la web 2.0

La investigación se centra en el estudio de la percepción que los nativos digitales y los jóvenes tienen acerca de sus conductas y relaciones sociales en la Web 2.0. Se parte de la hipótesis de que la forma en que los adolescentes y jóvenes utilizan la red a través de los servicios y contenidos digitales abiertos, está transformando sus relacionales sociales en la medida en que son abiertas, activas, globales, inmediatas, y poco controlables por otros agentes sociales (familiares, educativos o institucionales). El universo de la investigación está constituido por jóvenes y adolescentes, nativos digitales e inmigrantes digitales de ambos sexos, comprendidos entre los 14 y los 35 años de edad agrupados en los siguientes tramos: 14-16; 17-24; y25-35 años. Las conclusiones son interesantes. Nonlinear response of single-molecule nanomagnets: equilibrium and dynamical

We present an experimental study of the {\em nonlinear} susceptibility of Mn$_{12}$ single-molecule magnets. We investigate both their thermal-equilibrium and dynamical nonlinear responses. The equilibrium results show the sensitivity of the nonlinear susceptibility to the magnetic anisotropy, which is nearly absent in the linear response for axes distributed at random. The nonlinear dynamic response of Mn$_{12}$ was recently found to be very large and displaying peaks reversed with respect to classical superparamagnets [F. Luis {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 92}, 107201 (2004)]. Here we corroborate the proposed explanation -- strong field dependence of the relaxation rate due to the detuning of tunnel energy levels. This is done by studying the orientational dependence of the nonlinear susceptibility, which permits to isolate the quantum detuning contribution. Besides, from the analysis of the longitudinal and transverse contributions we estimate a bound for the decoherence time due to the coupling to the phonon bath.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, resubmitted to Phys. Analiza el surgimiento y creciente visibilidad de las organizaciones privadas sin fines de lucro (OPSFL) en el Perú durante las dos últimas décadas. Las OPSFL poseen una lógica de operación diferente a la del Estado, que busca proporcionar bienestar público; y al de la empresa, que está orientada hacia la búsqueda del lucro y el beneficio privado. Por el contrario, éstas son entidades que, a pesar de su carácter privado, se dirigen a satisfacer necesidades colectivas o de interés público. La emergencia de este tipo de organizaciones no sólo se da en nuestro país o a nivel de América Latina, por el contrario, se da a escala mundial impactando y redefiniendo significativamente las formas de relacionarse entre el Estado y la sociedad civil.
