    Sea Surface Height Measurement Using a GNSS Wave Glider

    To overcome spatial and temporal limitations of sea surface height instruments such as tide gauges, satellite altimetry, and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) buoys, we investigate the use of an unmanned, self‐propelled Wave Glider surface vehicle equipped with a geodetic GNSS receiver. Centimetric precision instantaneous sea surface height measurement is demonstrated from a 13‐day deployment in the North Sea, during which the glider traversed a track of about 600 km. Ellipsoidal heights were estimated at 5 Hz using kinematic GNSS precise point positioning and, after correcting for tides using the Finite Element Solution 2014b model and for the geoid using the Earth Gravitational Model 2008, hourly dynamic ocean topography measurements agreed with those from the UK Met Office Forecasting Ocean Assimilation Model‐Atlantic Margin Model 7 to 6.1‐cm standard deviation. Conversely, on correcting for the tides and dynamic ocean topography, 5.1‐cm standard deviation agreement with Earth Gravitational Model 2008 at its North Sea spatial resolution was obtained. Hourly measurements of significant wave height agreed with the WAVEWATCH III model and WaveNet buoy observations to 17 and 24 cm (standard deviation), respectively, and dominant wave periods to 1.4 s. These precisions were obtained in winds gusting up to 20 m/s. Plain Language Summary High‐rate (subsecond), continuous sea surface height measurement is demonstrated using an unmanned, self‐propelled, surf‐board sized Wave Glider surface vehicle equipped with a Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) receiver and antenna. GNSS data postprocessing determined centimetric precision sea surface heights over a user‐defined, remotely piloted route of about 600 km in the North Sea over 13 days, measuring the waves and the variation in the sea surface from the geoid (the surface it would occupy due to Earth's gravity alone) caused by winds and currents, plus tides. Our portable, bespoke, in situ measurement method is applicable globally, subject to sufficient light for on‐board instrumentation solar power, 10‐m water depth, and GNSS signal tracking (outages attributed to waves breaking over the antenna arose when local winds became near gale force). The GNSS Wave Glider overcomes sea surface height measurement spatial resolution limitations of coastline‐based tide gauges, single location GNSS buoys and ships following fixed routes, and the temporal and spatial resolution limitations of radar measurements from satellites. Such sea surface height measurements are needed for studies on coastal erosion; for the transport of sediments, pollutants, and heat; for understanding coastal ecosystems and climate change; and for coastal structural design and navigation management

    Multisatellite altimetry calibration and validation using a GNSS Wave Glider in the North Sea

    The concept of in situ multisatellite altimetry calibration and validation in the absolute sense using ocean autonomous surface vehicles as global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) platforms is demonstrated through an experiment in the North Sea during 2016. A Wave Glider (WG) equipped with geodetic GNSS traveled to locations ranging from 21 to 78 km from the coast to be directly under four Jason-series tracks and two CryoSat-2 tracks. 5-Hz sea surface heights (SSHs) were estimated from precise point positioning (PPP) mode processing of GPS+GLONASS data, together with hourly zenith wet tropospheric delays (ZWDs), and used as reference values for altimetry satellite measured SSH, tropospheric delay, and significant wave height (SWH). SSH biases obtained were −30 to −8 mm for Jason-2 using geophysical data record (GDR)-D products, −40 to +1 mm for Jason-3 using GDR-F products, and −29 and +18 mm for CryoSat-2 using SAR mode GOP baseline C products. These biases are almost commensurate with results from previous studies in other regions that used GNSS buoys or onshore GNSS reference stations with geoid and tide extrapolation. The Jason-2 and Jason-3 microwave radiometer (MWR)-measured ZWDs differed, respectively, by −15 and −10 mm on average from those measured by the GNSS WG. Root-mean-square SWH differences of 2–6 cm were obtained between Jason-2/3 and the co-located GNSS WG, and equivalent differences of 19–21 cm for CryoSat-2

    Effectiveness of an intervention for improving drug prescription in primary care patients with multimorbidity and polypharmacy:Study protocol of a cluster randomized clinical trial (Multi-PAP project)

    This study was funded by the Fondo de Investigaciones Sanitarias ISCIII (Grant Numbers PI15/00276, PI15/00572, PI15/00996), REDISSEC (Project Numbers RD12/0001/0012, RD16/0001/0005), and the European Regional Development Fund ("A way to build Europe").Background: Multimorbidity is associated with negative effects both on people's health and on healthcare systems. A key problem linked to multimorbidity is polypharmacy, which in turn is associated with increased risk of partly preventable adverse effects, including mortality. The Ariadne principles describe a model of care based on a thorough assessment of diseases, treatments (and potential interactions), clinical status, context and preferences of patients with multimorbidity, with the aim of prioritizing and sharing realistic treatment goals that guide an individualized management. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a complex intervention that implements the Ariadne principles in a population of young-old patients with multimorbidity and polypharmacy. The intervention seeks to improve the appropriateness of prescribing in primary care (PC), as measured by the medication appropriateness index (MAI) score at 6 and 12months, as compared with usual care. Methods/Design: Design:pragmatic cluster randomized clinical trial. Unit of randomization: family physician (FP). Unit of analysis: patient. Scope: PC health centres in three autonomous communities: Aragon, Madrid, and Andalusia (Spain). Population: patients aged 65-74years with multimorbidity (≄3 chronic diseases) and polypharmacy (≄5 drugs prescribed in ≄3months). Sample size: n=400 (200 per study arm). Intervention: complex intervention based on the implementation of the Ariadne principles with two components: (1) FP training and (2) FP-patient interview. Outcomes: MAI score, health services use, quality of life (Euroqol 5D-5L), pharmacotherapy and adherence to treatment (Morisky-Green, Haynes-Sackett), and clinical and socio-demographic variables. Statistical analysis: primary outcome is the difference in MAI score between T0 and T1 and corresponding 95% confidence interval. Adjustment for confounding factors will be performed by multilevel analysis. All analyses will be carried out in accordance with the intention-to-treat principle. Discussion: It is essential to provide evidence concerning interventions on PC patients with polypharmacy and multimorbidity, conducted in the context of routine clinical practice, and involving young-old patients with significant potential for preventing negative health outcomes.     The opening of wind-driven polynyas

    The opening of wind-driven coastal polynyas has often been investigated using idealised flux models. Polynya flux models postulate that the boundary separating the region of thin ice adjacent to the coast within the polynya from the thicker ice piling up downstream is a mathematical shock. To conserve mass, any divergence of the ice flux across the shock translates into a change in the shock’s position or, in other words, a change in the width of the thin-ice region of the polynya. Polynya flux models are physically incomplete in that, while they conserve ice mass, they do not conserve linear momentum. In this paper, we investigate the improvements that can be achieved in the simulation of polynyas by imposing conservation of momentum as well as mass. We start by adopting a mathematically solid formulation of the ice mass and momentum balances throughout the polynya region, from the coast to the pack ice. Hydrostatic and plastic versions of the ice internal forces are used in the model. Two different approaches are then explored. We first postulate the existence of a shock at the seaward edge of the thin-ice region of the polynya and derive jump conditions for the conservation of ice mass and momentum at the shock which are consistent with the continuous model physics. Polynyas simulated by this mass- and momentum-conserving shock model always reach a steady state if the polynya forcing is uniform in space and constant in time. This is also true for all polynya flux models presented previously in the literature, but the location of the steady-state polynya edge and the time required to reach it can greatly differ between shock formulations and more simplistic flux ones. We next relax the assumption that a shock exists and let the boundary between thin ice and piling up ice emerge naturally as part of the full solution of the continuous model equations. Polynyas simulated in this way are very different from those simulated by either shock or flux models. Most notably, we find that steady-state polynya solutions are not always attainable in the continuous model. We determine under which conditions this is so and explain how such unsteady solutions come about. We also show that, in those cases when a steady-state solution exists in the continuous model, the steady-state polynya width is considerably larger than in the shock model, and the time required to attain it is accordingly longer. The occurrence of such significant differences between the polynya solutions calculated with flux and shock models, on the one hand, and with more sophisticated continuous formulations, on the other hand, suggests that the former are, at best, incomplete, and should be used with caution

    Evaluation of a polynya flux model by means of thermal infrared satellite estimates

    We test the ability of a two-dimensional flux model to simulate polynya events with narrow open-water zones by comparing model results to ice-thickness and ice-production estimates derived from thermal infrared Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) observations in conjunction with an atmospheric dataset. Given a polynya boundary and an atmospheric dataset, the model correctly reproduces the shape of an 11 day long event, using only a few simple conservation laws. Ice production is slightly overestimated by the model, owing to an underestimated ice thickness. We achieved best model results with the consolidation thickness parameterization developed by Biggs and others (2000). Observed regional discrepancies between model and satellite estimates might be a consequence of the missing representation of the dynamic of the thin-ice thickening (e.g. rafting). We conclude that this simplified polynya model is a valuable tool for studying polynya dynamics and estimating associated fluxes of single polynya event

    This diploma thesis takes a closer look at the aspects that influence the process of becoming a teacher from the perspective of men. The theoretical part focuses first on general factors such as the personality of a teacher and teaching profession. It discusses the importance of a teacher?s personality and its development. Furthermore, it gives a description of the teaching profession, its demands and requirements, and its different phases. Next, it proceeds to a more specific issue which is the position of men in education. Finally, it describes teachers of foreign languages as a specific group of experts. In the practical part five male teachers at different stages of their careers are interviewed. They are asked about specific aspects that influence the process of becoming a teacher. The questions are structured into three parts: becoming a teacher, demands and requirements of the teaching profession, and men in education. At the end of the thesis my own conception of a good teacher is introduced
