    Below-ground arthropod diversity in conventional and organic vineyards: A review

    Viticulture is one of the most important agricultural sectors in the Mediterranean area but also one with substantial impact on the soil ecosystem. Some of the most common practices in viticulture, such as tillage, inter-row management, fertilization and use of pesticides, can have important effects on soil communities. The latter significantly contribute to several fundamental soil processes such as decomposition, nutrient and carbon cycling, and microbiota regulation. In perspective, it is therefore necessary to assess the effects of agronomical practices on soil biological communities. The increasing shift towards organic viticulture is seen as a promising management model to maintain soil functionality and preserve soil biodiversity. Below, we present an appraisal of the main practices in conventional and organic viticulture and their possible effects on soil mesofauna. Understanding the extent to which organic practices contribute to maintaining/altering soil functionality and biodiversity is a fundamental step towards the development of an environmentally sustainable viticulture

    We discuss the behavior of the fully frustrated hypercubic cell in the infinite dimensional mean-field limit. In the Ising case the system undergoes a glass transition, well described by the random orthogonal model. Under the glass temperature aging effects show clearly.     The collapse of the Morandi bridge in Italy, which took place in the summer of 2018, has had enormous emotional, economic, and social consequences for the inhabitants of the area, which are felt throughout the world. As seen in the literature, collective traumatic events increase the experience of insecurity and paranoia, thus increasing the perception of vulnerability. The present work aims to bring out the emotions most experienced by the participants connected to the traumatic event in question, paying attention to the possible solutions to be proposed to local stakeholders from a sustainability perspective, this way favouring community empowerment. The research, carried out with the photovoice technique, involved 30 young adults residing in areas near the event. The results illustrate how the participants experienced mainly feelings of emptiness, vulnerability, and fear as well as anger, despair, and mistrust of the institutions. It was also stressed that the economic and structural hardships hit the inhabitants hard. There have been many concrete solutions identified by the participants: creating a support network, supporting the local economy, and keeping the memory alive. The research and application implications underline the importance of using photovoice within community interventions, a tool that facilitates awareness and active citizenship

    Outpatient Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Meta-Analysis

    Introduction: Outpatient total hip arthroplasty (THA) is increasingly popular. This meta-analysis investigated the potential advantages of outpatient regimes for THA. Methods: This study followed the PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Embase, and Scopus databases were accessed in June 2021. All clinical studies investigating outpatient THA were considered. The outcomes of interest were pain, infection, mortality, revision, dislocation, readmission rates, and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Results: Data from 102,839 patients were included. A total of 52% (153,168 of 102,839 patients) were women. The mean age of patients was 62.6 +/- 4.6 years, the mean BMI was 29.1 +/- 1.8 kg/m(2). Good comparability was found in age, BMI, and gender (p > 0.1). No difference was found in pain (p = 0.4), infections (p = 0.9), mortality (p = 0.9), rate of revision (p = 0.1), dislocation (p = 0.9), and readmission (p = 0.8). The outpatient group demonstrated a greater rate of DVT (OR 3.57; 95% CI 2.47 to 5.18; p < 0.0001). Conclusions: In selected patients, outpatient THA can be performed safely with optimal outcomes comparable with inpatient THA. Clear and comprehensive pre-operative planning should involve a multi-disciplinary group composed of orthopaedic surgeons, anaesthesia and rehabilitation specialists, and physiotherapists. Each centre performing outpatient THA should implement continuous homecoming welfare activity, to supervise physiotherapy and monitor anticoagulant therapy

    Dynamical Behaviour of Low Autocorrelation Models

    We have investigated the nature of the dynamical behaviour in low autocorrelation binary sequences. These models do have a glass transition TGT_G of a purely dynamical nature. Above the glass transition the dynamics is not fully ergodic and relaxation times diverge like a power law τ(TTG)γ\tau\sim (T-T_G)^{-\gamma} with γ\gamma close to 22. Approaching the glass transition the relaxation slows down in agreement with the first order nature of the dynamical transition. Below the glass transition the system exhibits aging phenomena like in disordered spin glasses.     Whole-body vibration decreases delayed onset muscle soreness following eccentric exercise in elite hockey players: a randomised controlled trial

    Abstract Background Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is a common non-structural muscle injury which can disrupt training and impair performance in elite athletes. Vibration therapy reduces inflammation and improves neuromuscular efficiency, leading to reductions in pain and stiffness, and may be effective for the prevention or treatment of DOMS. However, the effect of whole-body vibration (WBV) used after sport in elite athletes has not been reported. Methods A randomised, controlled trial was performed. Participants were elite (national or international level) hockey players and underwent an eccentric exercise protocol previously shown to produce clinical DOMS. After exercise, one group underwent static stretching with WBV therapy, and the other performed stretching only. Baseline and serial post-exercise pain scores and measurements of quadriceps tightness were obtained. Results Eleven participants were recruited into each study arm. There were no significant differences in baseline group characteristics. Participants receiving WBV had significant reductions in both pain (p = 0.04) and quadriceps tightness (p = 0.02) compared with stretching only. Conclusions Post-exercise WBV is effective in elite hockey players to reduce DOMS after eccentric exercise. Elite athletes in multi-sprint sports are at risk of DOMS during training and competition, and its reduction could contribute to reduced injury risk and improved performance. This treatment modality is favourable because it can be incorporated with minimal disruption into the recovery section of existing training regimes. These findings may also be extrapolated to other multi-sprint sports

    The Critical Properties of Two-dimensional Oscillator Arrays

    We present a renormalization group study of two dimensional arrays of oscillators, with dissipative, short range interactions. We consider the case of non-identical oscillators, with distributed intrinsic frequencies within the array and study the steady-state properties of the system. In two dimensions no macroscopic mutual entrainment is found but, for identical oscillators, critical behavior of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type is shown to be present. We then discuss the stability of (BKT) order in the physical case of distributed quenched random frequencies. In order to do that, we show how the steady-state dynamical properties of the two dimensional array of non-identical oscillators are related to the equilibrium properties of the XY model with quenched randomness, that has been already studied in the past. We propose a novel set of recursion relations to study this system within the Migdal Kadanoff renormalization group scheme, by mean of the discrete clock-state formulation. We compute the phase diagram in the presence of random dissipative coupling, at finite values of the clock state parameter.
