Weakly bound systems, continuum effects, and reactions
Structure of weakly bound/unbound nuclei close to particle drip lines is
different from that around the valley of beta stability. A comprehensive
description of these systems goes beyond standard Shell Model and demands an
open quantum system description of the nuclear many-body system. We approach
this problem using the Gamow Shell Model which provides a fully microscopic
description of bound and unbound nuclear states, nuclear decays, and reactions.
We present in this paper the first application of the GSM for a description of

Nuclear rotation in the continuum
Atomic nuclei often exhibit collective
rotational-like behavior in highly excited states, well above the particle
emission threshold. What determines the existence of collective motion in the
continuum region, is not fully understood.
In this work, by studying the collective rotation of
the positive-parity deformed configurations of the one-neutron halo nucleus
Be, we assess different mechanisms that stabilize collective behavior
beyond the limits of particle stability.
To solve a particle-plus-core problem, we employ a
non-adiabatic coupled-channel formalism and the Berggren single-particle
ensemble, which explicitly contains bound states, narrow resonances, and the
scattering continuum. We study the valence-neutron density in the intrinsic
rotor frame to assess the validity of the adiabatic approach as the excitation
energy increases.
We demonstrate that collective rotation of the ground
band of Be is stabilized by (i) the fact that the one-neutron
decay channel is closed, and (ii) the angular momentum alignment, which
increases the parentage of high- components at high spins; both effects
act in concert to decrease decay widths of ground-state band members. This is
not the case for higher-lying states of Be, where the
neutron-decay channel is open and often dominates.
We demonstrate that long-lived collective states can
exist at high excitation energy in weakly bound neutron drip-line nuclei such
as Be
Wide partitions, Latin tableaux, and Rota's basis conjecture
Say that mu is a ``subpartition'' of an integer partition lambda if the
multiset of parts of mu is a submultiset of the parts of lambda, and define an
integer partition lambda to be ``wide'' if for every subpartition mu of lambda,
mu >= mu' in dominance order (where mu' denotes the conjugate or transpose of
mu). Then Brian Taylor and the first author have conjectured that an integer
partition lambda is wide if and only if there exists a tableau of shape lambda
such that (1) for all i, the entries in the ith row of the tableau are
precisely the integers from 1 to lambda_i inclusive, and (2) for all j, the
entries in the jth column of the tableau are pairwise distinct. This conjecture
was originally motivated by Rota's basis conjecture and, if true, yields a new
class of integer multiflow problems that satisfy max-flow min-cut and
integrality. Wide partitions also yield a class of graphs that satisfy
``delta-conjugacy'' (in the sense of Greene and Kleitman), and the above
conjecture implies that these graphs furthermore have a completely saturated
stable set partition. We present several partial results, but the conjecture

Invited discussant comments during the UCL–Penn Global Covid Study webinar ‘Family Life: Stress, Relationship Conflict and Child Adjustment’
The main objective of this article is to comment on the findings presented during the UCL–Penn Global Covid Study webinar, ‘Family Life: Stress, Relationship Conflict and Child Adjustment’ by Portnoy and colleagues. The study examined the ways in which family stress conflict has been affected by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Informed by the transactional models of parent–child behaviour, the authors are specifically interested in exploring the effect of child adjustment on parental outcomes. The study, currently under consideration for publication, found that child emotional and conduct problems predicted changes in parental depression and stress during the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic. Child hyperactivity predicted parental stress, but not depression. None of the child behaviour problems (emotional problems, conduct problems and hyperactivity) predicted parental relational conflict. This article discusses reasons why the study under consideration did not find a significant effect on relational conflict and posts questions that can be addressed in future studies
Description of the proton and neutron radiative capture reactions in the Gamow shell model
We formulate the Gamow shell model (GSM) in coupled-channel (CC)
representation for the description of proton/neutron radiative capture
reactions and present the first application of this new formalism for the
calculation of cross-sections in mirror reactions 7Be(p,gamma)8B and
7Li(n,gamma)8Li. The GSM-CC formalism is applied to a translationally-invariant
Hamiltonian with an effective finite-range two-body interaction. Reactions
channels are built by GSM wave functions for the ground state 3/2- and the
first excited state 1/2- of 7Be/7Li and the proton/neutron wave function
expanded in different partial waves
Effects of fade distribution on a mobile satellite downlink and uplink performance in a frequency reuse cellular configuration
In a mobile satellite system with a frequency reuse cellular configuration, significant co-channel interference can be experienced due to the antenna sidelobe level. The signal will be subjected not only to its own fading, but also to the effect of the varying degree of fading on co-channel interferer, and this interference will behave differently in the up and in the down link. This paper presents a quantitative evaluation of the combined effects of fades and co-channel interference on a mobile satellite link
Mode stability in delta Scuti stars: linear analysis versus observations in open clusters
A comparison between linear stability analysis and observations of pulsation
modes in five delta Scuti stars, belonging to the same cluster, is presented.
The study is based on the work by Michel et al. (1999), in which such a
comparison was performed for a representative set of model solutions obtained
independently for each individual star considered. In this paper we revisit the
work by Michel et al. (1999) following, however, a new approach which consists
in the search for a single, complete, and coherent solution for all the
selected stars, in order to constrain and test the assumed physics describing
these objects. To do so, refined descriptions for the effects of rotation on
the determination of the global stellar parameters and on the adiabatic
oscillation frequency computations are used. In addition, a crude attempt is
made to study the role of rotation on the prediction of mode instabilities.The
present results are found to be comparable with those reported by Michel et al.
(1999). Within the temperature range log T_eff = 3.87-3.88 agreement between
observations and model computations of unstable modes is restricted to values
for the mixing-length parameter alpha_nl less or equal to 1.50. This indicates
that for these stars a smaller value for alpha_nl is required than suggested
from a calibrated solar model. We stress the point that the linear stability
analysis used in this work still assumes stellar models without rotation and
that further developments are required for a proper description of the

Asteroseismology of delta Scuti stars in open clusters: Praesepe
The present paper provides a general overview of the asteroseismic potential
of delta Scuti stars in clusters, in particular focusing on convection
diagnostics. We give a summarise of the last results obtained by the authors
for the Praesepe cluster of which five delta Scuti stars are analysed. In that
work, linear analysis is confronted with observations, using refined
descriptions for the effects of rotation on the determination of the global
stellar parameters and on the adiabatic oscillation frequency computations. A
single, complete, and coherent solution for all the selected stars is found,
which lead the authors to find important restrictions to the convection
description for a certain range of effective temperatures. Furthermore, the
method used allowed to give an estimate of the global parameters of the

Large-eddy simulation of the flow in a lid-driven cubical cavity
Large-eddy simulations of the turbulent flow in a lid-driven cubical cavity
have been carried out at a Reynolds number of 12000 using spectral element
methods. Two distinct subgrid-scales models, namely a dynamic Smagorinsky model
and a dynamic mixed model, have been both implemented and used to perform
long-lasting simulations required by the relevant time scales of the flow. All
filtering levels make use of explicit filters applied in the physical space (on
an element-by-element approach) and spectral (modal) spaces. The two
subgrid-scales models are validated and compared to available experimental and
numerical reference results, showing very good agreement. Specific features of
lid-driven cavity flow in the turbulent regime, such as inhomogeneity of
turbulence, turbulence production near the downstream corner eddy, small-scales
localization and helical properties are investigated and discussed in the
large-eddy simulation framework. Time histories of quantities such as the total
energy, total turbulent kinetic energy or helicity exhibit different evolutions
but only after a relatively long transient period. However, the average values
