    Mechanisms for Lasing with Cold Atoms as the Gain Medium

    We realize a laser with a cloud of cold rubidium atoms as gain medium, placed in a low-finesse cavity. Three different regimes of laser emission are observed corresponding respectively to Mollow, Raman and Four Wave Mixing mechanisms. We measure an output power of up to 300 μ\muW and present the main properties of these different lasers in each regime

    Modelling of mercury isotope separation in CP stellar atmospheres: results and problems

    Formation of anomalous isotope abundances in the atmospheres of chemically peculiar (CP) stars can be explained by light-induced drift (LID). This effect is additional to the radiative acceleration and appears due to systematic asymmetry of radiative flux in partly overlapping isotopic spectral line profiles. LID causes levitation of an isotope with a red-shifted spectral line and sinking of an isotope with a blue-shifted line, generating thus diffusive separation of isotopes. We have studied diffusion of mercury as a typical well-studied isotope-rich heavy metal. Our model computations show that in mercury-rich quiescent atmospheres of CP stars LID causes levitation of the heavier mercury isotopes and sinking of the lighter ones. Precise quantitative modelling of the process of isotope separation demands very high-resolution computations and the high-precision input data, including data on hyperfine and isotopic splitting of spectral lines, adequate line profiles and impact cross-sections. Presence of microturbulence and weak stellar winds can essentially reduce the effect of radiative-driven diffusion.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures.     Analysis of location uncertainty for a microearthquake cluster: A case study

    In many reservoirs, an increase in permeability and conductivity is achieved by hydraulic fracturing/stimulations which open cracks and fractures that then act as pathways for fluids to navigate in the subsurface. Mapping, localization, and general characterization of these fracture systems is of key importance in oil, gas, and geothermal energy production. The location of the microseismic events triggered during hydraulic fracturing or stimulation can help to characterize the properties of the fracture system. There are many different methods for localizing microearthquakes and, in general, these methods yield different locations, velocity models, and event origin times, due to differences in algorithms and input models. Here we focus on studying location confidence intervals associated with two localization methods, classical (triangulation) and Double-Difference, where uncertainties due to origin times can be marginalized away, thus decreasing uncertainties in the event locations. We relocate events using these two methods and three different velocity models. Of the two methods used here, Double-Difference produces smallest confidence regions. We also illustrate that, for our dataset in particular, marginalizing away the influence of the unknown origin times also improves the confidence intervals

    Electrochemical oxidation of water on synthetic boron-doped diamond thin film anodes

    Electrolysis in aqueous 1 M HClO4 and 1 M H2SO4 solutions has been carried out under galvanostatic conditions using boron-doped diamond electrodes (BDD). Analyses of the oxidation products have shown that in 1 M HClO4 the main reaction is oxygen evolution, while in H2SO4 the main reaction is the formation of H2S2O8. In both electrolytes small amounts of O3 and H2O2 are formed. Finally, a simplified mechanism involving hydroxyl radicals formed by water discharge has been proposed for water oxidation on boron-doped diamond anode

    Emission Lines in the Spectrum of the 3He Star 3 Cen A

    Emission in the 4d - 4f transitions of MnII (multiplet 13, 6122-6132 Ang), in the 4f - 6g transitions of PII, and in 6149.5 Ang of HgII has been detected in the spectrum of the helium weak star 3 Centauri A (B5 III-IVp). Weaker emission from the same MnII multiplet is also seen in the hot, mild HgMn star 46 Aquila (B9 III).It is suggested that the emission is of photospheric origin and may be evidence for the stratification of manganese, phosphorus and mercury in the photosphere of 3 CenA, and of manganese in 46Aql.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figure

    Suicides in Psychiatric Patients: Identifying Health Care-Related Factors through Clinical Practice Reviews.

    The objective of this study was to identify health care-related factors associated with death by suicide in psychiatric patients and to gain insight into clinician views on how to deal with suicidality. The study material derived from a clinician committee in a psychiatric department reviewing every outpatient and inpatient suicide in a standardized way. Reports' conclusions and corresponding plenary discussion minutes regarding 94 suicides were analyzed using inductive thematic content analysis. Health care-related factors were categorized into 4 themes: patient evaluation, patient management, clinician training, and involvement of relevant non-clinical partners. Clinician views on the themes were expressed through statements (i) promoting or restricting an aspect of care (here called recommendations), which mainly followed existing guidelines and were consensual and (ii) without precise indication (here called comments), which departed from mainstream opinions or addressed topics not covered by existing policy. Involvement of non-clinical partners emerged as a new key issue for suicide prevention in psychiatric departments and should be openly discussed with patients. Clinicians preferred balanced conclusions when they reviewed suicide cases

    Multicomponent intervention for patients admitted to an emergency unit for suicide attempt: an exploratory study

    Suicide is a major cause of premature deaths worldwide and belongs to the top priority public health issues. While suicide attempt is the most important risk factor for completed suicide, intervention for suicide attempters (SA) have produced mixed results. Since an important proportion of SA request medical care, emergency units (EU) are an opportune setting to implement such interventions. This exploratory study evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of a multicomponent intervention for SA admitted to an EU. The intervention consisted of coordination by a case manager of a joint crisis plan (JCP), an early meeting with relatives and the existing care network, as well as phone contacts during 3 months after suicide attempt. Among 107 SA admitted to the emergency unit during the study period, 51 could not be included for logistical reason, 22 were excluded, and intervention was offered to 34. Of these, 15 refused the intervention, which was thus piloted with 19 SA. First-time attempters most frequently declined the intervention. Feasibility and acceptability of phone contacts and case manager were good, while JCPs and meetings were difficult to implement and perceived as less acceptable. Refusal pattern questions the global acceptability and is discussed: JCPs and meetings will have to be modified in order to improve their feasibility and acceptability, especially among first-time attempters

Comprehensive social, economic, environmental, structural, and cultural factors heavily impact on adolescents' sexual and reproductive health and early pregnancy. Health professionals can play a pivotal role in the prevention of unplanned pregnancy. Improved access to family planning, sexuality education in schools, community-based interventions, and policies contribute greatly to reduce the risk of adolescent pregnancy and the adoption of respectful and responsible sexual behaviour. Additionally, health care professionals can support pregnant adolescents in making decisions under these circumstances and provide adequate health care. This review highlights actions that can guide healthcare professionals in empowering young adolescents to become more aware and capable of making informed decisions about their sexual life, health, and future

    Three very young HgMn stars in the Orion OB1 Association

    We report the detection of three mercury-manganese stars in the Orion OB1 association. HD 37886 and BD-0 984 are in the approximately 1.7 million year old Orion OB1b. HD 37492 is in the approximately 4.6 million year old Orion OB1c. Orion OB1b is now the youngest cluster with known HgMn star members. This places an observational upper limit on the time scale needed to produce the chemical peculiarities seen in mercury-manganese stars, which should help in the search for the cause or causes of the peculiar abundances in HgMn and other chemically peculiar upper main sequence stars.Comment: 8 pages including 1 figure.     Abundances in HD27411 and the helium problem in Am stars

    We analyze a high-resolution spectrum of the A3m star HD27411. We compare abundances derived from ATLAS9 model atmospheres with those using the more computationally-intensive ATLAS12 code. We found very little differences in the abundances, suggesting that ATLAS9 can be used for moderate chemical peculiarity. Our abundances agree well with the predictions of diffusion theory, though for some elements it was necessary to calculate line profiles in non-thermodynamic equilibrium to obtain agreement. We investigate the effective temperatures and luminosities of Am/Fm stars using synthetic Stromgren indices derived from calculated spectra with the atmospheric abundances of HD27411. We find that the effective temperatures of Am/Fm stars derived from Stromgren photometry are reliable, but the luminosities are probably too low. Caution is required when deriving the reddening of these stars owing to line blanketing effects. A comparison of the relative proportions of pulsating and non-pulsating Am stars with delta Scuti stars shows quite clearly that there is no significant decrease of helium in the driving zone, contrary to current models of diffusion.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in MNRA
