    Information Diffusion in a Cobweb World

    Based on an assumption of one-way learning, Granato and Wong (2004) consider a framework with two groups of agents, Group L and Group H, where Group L is less attentive and uses the expectations of the more or highly attentive Group H to update their forecasts. The paper shows the boomerang effect, which is defined as a situation where the inaccurate forecasts of a less attentive group confound a more attentive group\u27s forecasts. This extended paper relaxes the one-way learning assumption and investigates the case that both groups are learning from each other, i.e., dual learning. Simulations suggest that a boomerang effect still exists. Surprisingly, although the highly attentive group has a full set of information to make forecasts, they still learn from Group L. The reason is that Group H adjusts their forecasts because there is available information in Group L\u27s forecast measurement error

    SPEDEN: Reconstructing single particles from their diffraction patterns

    Speden is a computer program that reconstructs the electron density of single particles from their x-ray diffraction patterns, using a single-particle adaptation of the Holographic Method in crystallography. (Szoke, A., Szoke, H., and Somoza, J.R., 1997. Acta Cryst. A53, 291-313.) The method, like its parent, is unique that it does not rely on ``back'' transformation from the diffraction pattern into real space and on interpolation within measured data. It is designed to deal successfully with sparse, irregular, incomplete and noisy data. It is also designed to use prior information for ensuring sensible results and for reliable convergence. This article describes the theoretical basis for the reconstruction algorithm, its implementation and quantitative results of tests on synthetic and experimentally obtained data. The program could be used for determining the structure of radiation tolerant samples and, eventually, of large biological molecular structures without the need for crystallization.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure

    Before turning 30, Winjie Tang Miao was named a hospital president and in 2011, she was tapped to lead the development of the newest hospital in the Texas Health Resources system. Miao’s rise to the top follows her success in previous health care administration leadership roles. Miao oversaw the development of more than $500 million in construction projects and the growth and development of a nationally-recognized breast health program. She is recognized as a “true visionary” with “a strong ability to grow inpatient and outpatient volumes, expand services in the community and advance quality in many areas of the hospital.” Miao is also active in her community and has won several awards, including recognition by Becker’s Hospital Review as one of “25 Healthcare Leaders Under Age 40” in 2011 and one of Modern Healthcare’s “Up and Comers” in 2008. She says some of her most fulfilling work was when she served as a clinic director opening a new medical clinic in an underserved village in Africa. Miao received her B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University and her Master of Healthcare Administration degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
