    Global sugar consumption has increased in the past 50 years; its abusive intake is responsible for peripheral insulin resistance, which causes the metabolic syndrome – obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and coronary heart disease. Objective To evaluate the effect of a fractionated diet without glucose as treatment for labyrinthine disorders associated with glucose–insulin index. Methods The study design was a prospective randomized controlled trial. Fifty-one patients were divided into two groups: the diet group (DG), which comprised subjects treated with a fractionated diet with glucose restriction, and the control group (CG), in which individuals were not counseled regarding diet. Patients underwent computerized dynamic posturography (CDP) and visual analog scale (VAS) on the first and 30th days of the study. Results There was improvement in the assessed posturographic conditions and VAS self-assessment in the DG group after 30 days when compared to the control group. Conclusion The fractionated diet with glucose restriction was effective for the treatment of vestibular dysfunction associated with glucose metabolism disorders. © 2015 Associação Brasileira de Otorrinolaringologia e Cirurgia CĂ©rvico-Facial82437237

    Ewing's Sarcoma Of The Head And Neck.

    CONTEXT: Ewing's sarcoma is a rare neoplasm, which usually arises in long bones of the limbs and in flat bones of the pelvis, with the involvement of head and neck bones being very unusual. CASE REPORT: a case of Ewing's sarcoma occurring in the mandible of a 35-year-old female. Pain and swelling of the tumor were the main complaints. The early hypothesis was an undifferentiated malignant neoplasm, possibly a sarcoma. The CT scan depicted an expansive lesion, encapsulated, with septa and characteristics of soft tissue, involving the left side of the mandible and extending to the surrounding tissues. The patient underwent surgical excision of the lesion, the definitive diagnosis of Ewing's sarcoma was established, and the patient commenced on radiotherapy.118619820

    Nematoides parasitas de plantas representam o maior estresse biĂłtico da agricultura, causando perdas anuais maiores que US$ 100 bilhĂ”es. Baseado nas limitaçÔes dos mĂ©todos de atuais de controle, o desenvolvimento de novas estratĂ©gias deve ser uma prioridade. Recentemente, a estratĂ©gia de silenciamento gĂȘnico, por interferĂȘncia mediada por RNA dupla fita, tem-se mostrado muito promissora para o controle de nematoides. Nesse trabalho foi inserida em embriĂ”es de soja, pela tĂ©cnica de biobalĂ­stica, uma construção de RNAi correspondente a uma fusĂŁo de regiĂ”es de dois genes que codificam para fatores de processamento de mRNA de Heterodera glycines e Meloidogyne incognita, visando a obtenção de eventos de soja GM resistentes Ă  esses fitonematoides. Para averiguar o efeito do silenciamento, 6 eventos GM foram desafiados com M. incognita. Seis semanas apĂłs a inoculação, as raĂ­zes das plantas foram avaliadas quanto Ă  indução de resistĂȘncia. Quando comparados ao tratamento controle, os eventos transgĂȘnicos mostraram uma redução signiricativa entre 71% a 92% no nĂșmero de ovos por grama de raiz. Os eventos transgĂȘnicos nĂŁo foram estatisticamente diferentes quando comparados entre si, exceto o evento GmFSMiHg ? 4IT3. Trabalhos publicados atĂ© o momento demonstram silenciamento in planta de 12 genes-alvo de Meloidogyne spp. ou Heterodera spp., resultando em redução de nematoides estabelecidos, fĂȘmeas em desenvolvimento e/ou nĂșmero de ovos de 68-95% em relação ao controle. Os resultados aqui apresentados mostram claramente a capacidade da soja transgĂȘnica em reduzir o potencial reprodutivo de M. incognita por meio de silenciamento gĂȘnico. A completa redução de M. incognita continua a ser o objetivo final, mas a redução parcial, como observado no bioensaio, pode ter aplicaçÔes importantes no controle de NFGs

    Sward structure management for a maximum short-term intake rate in annual ryegrass.

    This study tested the hypothesis that different sward structures, which were constructed by varying the pre- and post-grazing sward heights of annual ryegrass pasture (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) in southern Brazil, affect the short-term intake rate (STIR) by dairy cows. Treatments consisted of four sward-management strategies defined by a combination of two pre- (25 and 15 cm) and two post-grazing sward heights (10 and 5 cm): 15-05, 15-10, 25-05 and 25-10. A completely randomized block design with four replicates was used for the experimental design. The STIR was determined by the double-weighing technique. Jaw movements were evaluated using automatic recorders (IGER Behaviour Recorder). The results showed that treatment 25-10 allowed the animals to collect more herbage with a greater bite mass and thus resulted in a greater STIR. Treatments in which sward height was reduced to 10 cm generally favoured the ingestion process than treatments with a post-grazing sward height of 5 cm

    Affiliative bonds and cruel behavior in childhood interspecific relationships: A conceptual framework on the psychodynamics of affect regulation

    Background: Childhood interspecific relationships can be viewed as a mirror of the person’s capacity to interact with other living beings. The interspecific relationship can involve different attachment styles, affect regulation skills, transitional object dynamics, and self-awareness and mentalization processes. Yet interspecific relationships can also be disrupted, since they can be associated with cruel behavior toward animals, which is in turn related to possible psychopathology. Method: We provided a conceptual framework based on the literature addressing the interspecific relationship in both its adaptive and positive features as well as in its disrupted aspects. Discussion: Pets have often been regarded as attachment figures that can aid children in socialization and growth processes. They have been deemed to represent “social catalysts” that tend to facilitate human relationships, thus increasing prosocial behaviors. On the dark side of the pet-child interaction, childhood abuse of animals tends to be associated with behavioral and emotional problems that have been thought of as underlying psychopathology (e.g., conduct disorder and antisocial personality traits). Childhood cruelty to animals seems to accompany emotion dysregulation, poor social information processing, and low empathy. Conclusions: Since the child-pet relationship has substantial implications for the individual’s mental health and for the potential development of psychopathology, addressing children’s attitudes toward animals can aid in understanding the affective and emotional dimensions of their interpersonal experience

    Surgery vs. biopsy in the treatment of butterfly glioblastoma: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    : Butterfly glioblastomas (bGBM) are grade IV gliomas that spread to bilateral hemispheres by infiltrating the corpus callosum. Data on the effect of surgery are limited to small case series. The aim of this meta-analysis was to compare resection vs. biopsy in terms of survival outcomes and postoperative complications. A systematic review of the literature was conducted using PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases through March 2021 in accordance with the PRISMA checklist. Pooled hazard ratios were calculated and meta-analyzed in a random-effects model including assessment of heterogeneity. Out of 3367 articles, seven studies were included with 293 patients. Surgical resection was significantly associated with longer overall survival (HR 0.39, 95%CI 0.2-0.55) than biopsy. Low heterogeneity was observed (I2: 0%). In further analysis, the effect persisted in extent of resection subgroups of both ≄80% and <80%. No statistically significant difference between surgery and biopsy was detected in terms of postoperative complications, although these were numerically larger for surgery. In patients with bGBM, surgical resection was associated with longer survival prospects compared with biopsy

    Fermionic Wigs for AdS-Schwarzschild Black Holes

    We provide the metric, the gravitino fields and the gauge fields to all orders in the fermionic zero modes for D=5 and D=4, N=2 gauged supergravity solutions starting from non-extremal AdS--Schwarzschild black holes. We compute the Brown-York stress--energy tensor on the boundary of AdS_5 / AdS_4 spaces and we discuss some implications of the fermionic corrections to perfect fluid interpretation of the boundary theory. The complete non-linear solution, which we denote as fermionic wig, is achieved by acting with supersymmetry transformations upon the supergravity fields and that expansion naturally truncates at some order in the fermionic zero modes.Comment: 27 pages, Latex2e, no figures, 3 ancillary file

    A comparison of two rotational stocking strategies on the foraging behaviour and herbage intake by grazing sheep

    An understanding of the processes involved in grazing behaviour is a prerequisite for the design of efficient grassland management systems. The purpose of managing the grazing process is to identify sward structures that can maximize animal forage daily intake and optimize grazing time. Our aim was to evaluate the effect of different grazing management strategies on foraging behaviour and herbage intake by sheep grazing Italian ryegrass under rotational stocking. The experiment was carried out in 2015 in southern Brazil. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with two grazing management strategies and four replicates. The grazing management treatments were a traditional rotational stocking (RT), with pre- and post-grazing sward heights of 25 and 5 cm, respectively, and a ‘Rotatinuous’ stocking (RN) with pre- and post-grazing sward heights of 18 and 11 cm, respectively. Male sheep with an average live weight of 32 ± 2.3 kg were used. As intended, the pre- and post-grazing sward heights were according to the treatments. The pre-grazing leaf/stem ratio of the Italian ryegrass pasture did not differ between treatments (P > 0.05) (~2.87), but the post-grazing leaf/stem ratio was greater (P 0.05), with averages of 439, 167 and 85 min, respectively. The bite rate, feeding stations per min and steps per min by sheep were greater (P < 0.05) in the RN than in the RT treatment. The grazing time per hour and the bite rate were greater (P < 0.05) in the afternoon than in the morning in both treatments. The daily herbage intake by sheep grazing Italian ryegrass was greater (P < 0.05) in the RN than in the RT treatment (843.7 and 707.8 g organic matter/sheep, respectively). Our study supports the idea that even though the grazing time was not affected by the grazing management strategies when the animal behaviour responses drive management targets, such as in ‘Rotatinuous’ stocking, the sheep herbage intake is maximized, and the grazing time is optimized

    Rare genetic variant burden in DPYD predicts severe fluoropyrimidine-related toxicity risk

    Preemptive targeted pharmacogenetic testing of candidate variations in DPYD is currently being used to limit toxicity associated with fluoropyrimidines. The use of innovative next generation sequencing (NGS) approaches could unveil additional rare (minor allele frequency <1%) genetic risk variants. However, their predictive value and management in clinical practice are still controversial, at least partly due to the challenges associated with functional analyses of rare variants. The aim of this study was to define the predictive power of rare DPYD variants burden on the risk of severe fluoropyrimidine-related toxicity. The DPYD coding sequence and untranslated regions were analyzed by NGS in 120 patients developing grade 3–5 (NCI-CTC vs3.0) fluoropyrimidine-related toxicity and 104 matched controls (no-toxicity). The functional impact of rare variants was assessed using two different in silico predictive tools (i.e., Predict2SNP and ADME Prediction Framework) and structural modeling. Plasma concentrations of uracil (U) and dihydrouracil (UH2) were quantified in carriers of the novel variants. Here, we demonstrate that the burden of rare variants was significantly higher in patients with toxicity compared to controls (p = 0.007, Mann-Whitney test). Carriers of at least one rare missense DPYD variant had a 16-fold increased risk in the first cycle and an 11-fold increased risk during the entire course of chemotherapy of developing a severe adverse event compared to controls (p = 0.013 and p = 0.0250, respectively by multinomial regression model). Quantification of plasmatic U/UH2 metabolites and in silico visualization of the encoded protein were consistent with the predicted functional effect for the novel variations. Analysis and consideration of rare variants by DPYD-sequencing could improve prevention of severe toxicity of fluoropyrimidines and improve patients’ quality of life
