    Voluntary initiatives in global value chains

    The organization of production in global value chains (GVCs) has been accompanied by a rise of informal and insecure work. Yet, the role of labour agency has received scant attention in the GVC and related literatures. Selwyn (2013) therefore demands to shift attention towards engagement with labour movements to identify what he terms ‘labour-led’ social upgrading. We engage with this plea by investigating the role of voluntary initiatives (VIs) as non-governmental systems of labour regulation in GVCs. The paper asks under which conditions VIs with a more active role for labour emerge in GVCs. In order to answer this question, we apply Wright’s (2000) theory of the factors enabling positive class compromise to a VI that has been implemented in the Indonesian sportswear industry: In June 2011, a Protocol on Freedom of Association (FoA) was signed by Indonesian trade unions, large Indonesian manufacturers and major multinational brands. Based on the analysis of this case, we show that, while the spatial dispersion of production has weakened state mechanisms for the guarantee of labour rights, new pressure points for labour have also emerged, e.g. brands’ reputation or just-in-time production. Besides, new possibilities for transnational labour networks have opened that strengthen workers’ associational power. Moreover, GVCs fragment capital in different factions, such as producers and brands. Their material concerns are not necessarily congruent. Workers’ movements might be able to benefit from such divergent interests. We conclude that if VIs are to create conditions under which decent work can be strengthened, the involvement and strength of local labour organizations is required and producers’ and/or buyers’ dependence on workers’ cooperation may act as a catalyst

    Development of Light‐Activated LXR Agonists

    Activation of the oxysterol-sensing transcription factor liver X receptor (LXR) has been studied as a therapeutic strategy in metabolic diseases and cancer but is compromised by the side effects of LXR agonists. Local LXR activation in cancer treatment may offer an opportunity to overcome this issue suggesting potential uses of photopharmacology. We report the computer-aided development of photoswitchable LXR agonists based on the T0901317 scaffold, which is a known LXR agonist. Azologization and structure-guided structure-activity relationship evaluation enabled the design of an LXR agonist, which activated LXR with low micromolar potency in its light-induced (Z)-state and was inactive as (E)-isomer. This tool sensitized human lung cancer cells to chemotherapeutic treatment in a light-dependent manner supporting potential of locally activated LXR agonists as adjuvant cancer treatment

    Cryoprobe biopsy increases the diagnostic yield in endobronchial tumor lesions

    ObjectiveForceps biopsy is the standard method to obtain specimens in endoscopically visible lesions. It is common to combine forceps biopsy with cytology methods to increase the diagnostic yield. Although the flexible cryoprobe has been established for bronchoscopic interventions in malignant stenosis, the obtained biopsies, called “cryobiopsies,” have not been investigated in a large cohort of patients. The aim of this feasibility study was to prospectively evaluate the diagnostic yield and safety of cryobiopsy and forceps biopsy.MethodsDuring a 6-year period, 296 patients with visible endoluminal tumor lesions were included in the study at the bronchoscopy unit of a university hospital. In the first consecutively conducted 55 cases, both techniques, forceps biopsy and cryobiopsy, were applied simultaneously. Pathologic and quantitative image analyses were performed to evaluate the size and quality of the obtained specimens. We evaluated the safety and diagnostic yield to describe the feasibility of cryobiopsy.ResultsComparative analysis of the first conducted and randomly assigned 55 cases revealed a significantly higher diagnostic yield for cryobiopsy compared with forceps biopsy (89.1% vs 65.5%, P < .05). In this cohort, quantitative image analysis showed significantly larger biopsies regarding size and artifact-free tissue sections for cryobiopsy compared with forceps biopsy (P < .0001). The overall diagnostic yield of cryobiopsy was 89.5%. Mild bleeding occurred in 11 cases (3.7%), moderate bleeding occurred in 3 cases (1.0%), and severe bleeding occurred in 1 case (0.3%).ConclusionCryobiopsy is safe and increases the diagnostic yield in endobronchial tumor lesions.     Neurogenesis from Sox2 expressing cells in the adult cerebellar cortex

    We identified a rare undifferentiated cell population that is intermingled with the Bergmann glia of the adult murine cerebellar cortex, expresses the stem cell markers Sox2 and Nestin, and lacks markers of glial or neuronal differentiation. Interestingly, such Sox2(+) S100(-) cells of the adult cerebellum expanded after adequate physiological stimuli in mice (exercise), and Sox2(+) precursors acquired positivity for the neuronal marker NeuN over time and integrated into cellular networks. In human patients, SOX2(+) S100(-) cells similarly increased in number after relevant pathological insults (infarcts), suggesting a similar expansion of cells that lack terminal glial differentiation

    Design of a robotic hand with a biologically-inspired parallel actuation system for prosthetic applications

    Trabajo presentado al 34th Annual Mechanisms and Robotics Conference celebrado en Quebec del 15 al 18 de agosto de 2010.This paper presents the design of a robotic hand for prosthetic applications. The main characteristic of this robotic hand is its biologically-inspired parallel actuation system, which is based on the behavior/strength space of the Flexor Digitorum Profundus (FDP) and the Flexor Digitorum Superficialis (FDS) muscles. The design separates the strength space of the FDS and FDP muscles into a lighter strength region where finer manipulation and general approach tasks are executed, and a higher strength region where the more robust grasps are achieved.     Development of a knowledge-based and collaborative engineering design agent

    In order to avoid errors in engineering design that affect the later product life cycle, especially the manufacturing process, an analysis or evaluation has to be performed at the earliest possible stage. As this evaluation is very knowledge-intensive and often this knowledge is not directly available to the engineer, this paper presents an approach for a knowledge-based and collaborative engineering design agent. The technology based on multi-agent systems enables problem-solving support by an autonomous knowledge-based system which has its own beliefs, goals, and intentions. The presented approach is embedded in a CAD development environment and validated on an application example from engineering design

    Improved performance of the LHCb Outer Tracker in LHC Run 2

    The LHCb Outer Tracker is a gaseous detector covering an area of 5×6m25\times 6 m^2 with 12 double layers of straw tubes. The performance of the detector is presented based on data of the LHC Run 2 running period from 2015 and 2016. Occupancies and operational experience for data collected in ppp p, pPb and PbPb collisions are described. An updated study of the ageing effects is presented showing no signs of gain deterioration or other radiation damage effects. In addition several improvements with respect to LHC Run 1 data taking are introduced. A novel real-time calibration of the time-alignment of the detector and the alignment of the single monolayers composing detector modules are presented, improving the drift-time and position resolution of the detector by 20\%. Finally, a potential use of the improved resolution for the timing of charged tracks is described, showing the possibility to identify low-momentum hadrons with their time-of-flight.Comment: 29 pages, 20 figures, minor changes to match the published versio

    Целью работы являлось исследование процесса плазмохимического синтеза наноразмерных оксидных композиций для дисперсионного плутоний-ториевого ядерного топлива из водно-органических нитратных растворов (ВОНР). В результате было показано, что плазменная переработка диспергированных растворов ВОНР в воздушно-плазменном потоке позволяет осуществлять плазмохимический синтез наноразмерных порошков оксидных композиций с высокими физико-химическими и технологическими свойствами.The aim of this paper was to study the process of plasma-chemical synthesis of nanosized oxide compositions for dispersive plutonium-thorium nuclear fuel from water-organic nitrate solutions (WONS). As a result, it was shown that the plasma processing of dispersed WONS solutions in an air-plasma flow allows plasma-chemical synthesis of nanosized powders of oxide compositions with high physical, chemical and technological properties
