Religion and Innovation in Europe: Implications for Product Life-Cycle Management

    Get PDF
This paper analyzes the relationship between religion and innovation in Europe. To the best knowledge of the authors, no paper has been published about the association of religion with innovation and innovative products and services, at an individual level, for all the countries that belong to the European Union. This is the main goal of our paper. The results show that the orientation of innovativeness depends on religion. This study contains a segmentation of the main religions in Europe, taking into account their innovative profile. Connecting the characteristics of the religious segments found and the innovations life-cycle concept, companies have a tool to manage different innovations’ evolutive stages taking into consideration the religion of their customers. The European policy-makers, still dominated by a traditional innovation approach, gain a demand-side perspective to improve citizen’s innovativeness awareness and acceptance. Finally, religiosity does not seem to have a very strong relationship with attitudes towards innovation once we control for religious affiliation

The weakness of contemporary democracy, its fragility, has part of its origins in the corrosion of its legitimacy. Cerebral gas embolism caused by pleural fibrinolytic treatment

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Intrapleural fibrinolytic therapy is a technique used to treat empyemas and parapneumonic effusions. Cerebral air embolism is an unusual potentially severe complication of this technique. Summary of Case- A patient with parapneumonic pleural effusion underwent pleural lavage with streptokinase when he suddenly demonstrated focal neurological signs and seizures. The CT revealed multiple air-isodense spots in right hemisphere of the brain, suggesting cerebral air embolism. As a result of early diagnosis and emergency hyperbaric oxygenation, the patient recovered without delayed sequelae. CONCLUSIONS: Air embolism is a potentially severe complication which can occur during fibrinolytic pleural lavage, and clinicians should be aware of this risk. In this context, the onset of acute focal neurological signs or seizures should suggest the possibility of air embolism and lead to the transfer of the patient close to a hyperbaric facility within a few hours

This proposal is part of the investigation project “MuseoConstruídoYmiJardínCerebral” (ConstructedMuseumAndMyCerebralGarden), which is being carried out with the support of the scholarship from the Campus of International Excellence, within the frame of the International Programme for Talent Capture (PICATA) of Moncloa’s Campus. The above mentioned investigation is co-directed by the Group of Application of Visual Telecommunications, Department of Signal Waves, Systems and Radio Communications of the E.T.S.I. Telecommunication of the Madrid Polytechnic University and by the Department of Didactics of Plastic Expression from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Madrid Complutense University. The project consists of the design and implementation of Artistic Activities in collaboration with some museums of contemporary art. Such activities will be published in a specific Virtual Space (Virtual Community) as well as broadcasted at the Interactive TV (HbbTV), so that they can be accessed and performed by people with Physical Functional Diversity, thereby improving their quality of life. We present one of the activities we work with, the workshop of Literature “Writing Purposely”, held in Leganés CAMF (Centre for Comprehensive Care of People with Physical Disabilities), which combine art and technology masterfully. The data from this workshop will then feed on a blog, publish several books and magazines, the radio programme in Eco Leganés and video-creation activities of students of Fine Arts.peerReviewe

Effects of the super bialkali photocathode on the performance characteristics of a position-sensitive depth-of-interaction PET detector module

Proceeding of: IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference. NNS 2008, Dresden, Germany, Oct. 19-25, 2008Super Bialkali (SBA) and Ultra Bialkali (UBA) photocathodes are new technologies that improve the spectral response characteristics of position sensitive PMTs, boosting their quantum efficiency up to 35% and 43% (typ.) respectively [ref Hamamatsu]. Two SBA tubes were introduced into a production line of PET detectors mixed with the regular ones. The detectors were assembled on the same day and by the same operator using the standard factory protocols for detector mounting, calibration and testing. In this work we are reporting our evaluation of the achieved improvement by comparing the spatial and energy resolutions and the depth of-interaction performance of a PET detector modules with DOI capabilities assembled using the regular and the SBA versions of the same PS-PMT. We conclude that the superior performance of the SBA tube may enable the use of arrays with a larger number of crystals of smaller footprint, thus improving the detector intrinsic spatial resolution without degrading the energy resolution or the phoswich discrimination capabilityThis work was supported in part by the CENIT Programme (Ministerio de Industria), CIBER CB07/09/0031, RETIC-RECAVA (Ministerio de Sanidad y Consumo), and TEC2007-64731/TCM (Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia

An analysis of different resources and programmes supporting at-risk families in Spain

The purpose of this research was to present an overview of the existing family support resources in Spain for at-risk families. We analysed 64 family support services from 16 agencies belong to 11 regions of Spain. In a second phase, 20 positive parenting programmes were analysed in depth to ascertain the extent to which they met evidence-based programme quality criteria. Our results suggest that services for at-risk families are delivered by public, local and social agencies. Most interventions were psycho-educational and aimed at parental training. The analysis of the positive parenting programmes ’ quality showed both strengths and weaknesses. Most programmes relied on a previous needs analysis and interventions were, to some extent, outlined in a manual. Nevertheless, few programmes have been evaluated according to evidence-based programme criteria. In light of these results, we discuss several practical implications for services and family support policies aimed at at-risk families.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad de España EDU2013-41441-
