The objective of this study was to quantify and spatialize the agricultural composition and current land use in part of the Irrigation perimeter Nilo Coelho from the Landsat 8 satellite digital image classification. At first we performed the unsupervised classification image related to January 2014, identifying the separability within natural vegetation, water bodies, agricultural crops and anthropized areas. Then the supervised classification Maxver model was performed where it was observed that the fruit classes “Grape” (5.41%) “Acerola” (3.75%), “Coconut” (6.14%) “Guava” (6.17%), “Banana” (2.29%) and “Mango” (8.18%) showed dominance in the study area. These classes stood out in terms of yield in the area, pointing out that in that expansion which occurs in an area with agricultural crops in the irrigated Nilo Coelho, crops of mango, coco, guava, acerola, banana and grape also grow. In addition, we observed the emergence of new areas with passion fruit crops, melon, watermelon, corn, beans, onions, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, bell peppers, among other crops. Furthermore, we also found the occurrence of pastures containing buffel and elephant grasses, intercropping or not. The estimated overall accuracy was 80.52%, and the mapping defined as very good, with Kappa index equal to 0.7783.The objective of this study was to quantify and spatialize the agricultural composition and current land use in part of the Irrigation perimeter Nilo Coelho from the Landsat 8 satellite digital image classification. Uncorrected Author ProofAlzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder and is the most common cause of dementia worldwide. Cumulative data suggests that neuroinflammation plays a prominent and early role in AD, and there is compelling data from different research groups of age-associated dysregulation of the neuroimmune system. From the clinical point of view, despite clinical resemblance and neuropathological findings, there are important differences between the group of patients with sporadic early-onset (65 years old). Thus, it seems important to understand the age-dependent relationship between neuroinflammation and the underlying biology of AD in order to identify potential explanations for clinical heterogeneity, interpret biomarkers, and promote the best treatment to different clinical AD phenotypes. The study of the delicate balance between pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory sides of immune players in the different ages of onset of AD would be important to understand treatment efficacy in clinical trials and eventually, not only direct treatment to early disease stages, but also the possibility of establishing different treatment approaches depending on the age of the patient. In this review, we would like to summarize what is currently known about the interplay between "normal" age associated inflammatory changes and AD pathological mechanisms, and also the potential differences between early-onset and late-onset AD taking into account the age-related neuroimmune background at disease onset. This work was funded by "Bolsa para Investigacao" of Centro Hospitalar do Porto.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

AbstractThe granular cell tumor is an uncommon benign neoplasm with a strong predilection for the oral cavity, with a greater number of cases affecting the tongue. This research introduces the development of an electronic flowmeter based on the drag force that a body experiences when immersed in a fluid stream. Its main goal was the development of an Electronic Drag Force Flowmeter (EDFF) using a load cell, as well as the evaluation of its performance parameters. The developed flowmeter should not require specialized labor, equipments, computers or any sophisticated and complex method, providing an easy and accurate way of flow estimation. This research was carried out in the following stages: (i) EDFF mechanical structure development; (ii) data acquisition system and embedded software design; and (iii) evaluation of EDFF performance parameters. EDFF has routines for instantaneous flow rate measurement, interactive calibration, and also several flow meter parameter adjustments, allowing data transmission via a RS232 protocol. The real-time flow measurement task updates values of instantaneous flow rate each seven seconds, enabling unit selection. The interactive calibration routine guides users during all calibration process showing instructions on EDFF's display. A data digital filtering procedure was implemented in an embedded software using the Grubbs' Test in order to identify and to remove outliers from the acquired data. The Method of Least Squares was also implemented in the embedded software in order to calculate the fitting model coefficients on the calibration procedure. This flowmeter is able to work from 1.94 to 7.78 dm³ s-1 with an uncertainty of ± 5.7%. The coefficient of local head loss (K) was close to 0.55 for Reynolds number values higher than 10(5). The developed EDFF is a low-cost and stand-alone system with potential for agricultural applications

A new variety of purple tomato as a rich source of bioactive carotenoids and its potential health benefits

    Get PDF
Carotenoid-rich fractions (CRF) from pulp and peel of a new variety of purple tomato were investigated in comparison to a Red Cherry variety regarding carotenoids characterization, antioxidant capacity, and inhibition of proliferation of four tumor cell lines. CRF from peel of Purple tomato contains lutein, lycopene, and β-carotene up to 6, 1.5, and 2.5 times more than that of Red Cherry and it exhibited the highest antioxidant activity at 400 μg/mL, reaching 82% and 97% in DPPH and ABTS þ assays, respectively. Besides that, the Purple peel showed the highest scavenging lipoperoxides capacity as well as displayed the highest ferric reducing antioxidant power compared to the other CRF. In turn, the Red Cherry pulp CRF showed the highest antiproliferative activity against four tumor cell lines (MCF-7, NCI-H460, HeLa, and HepG2) at non-toxic concentrations. High concentration of neurosporene, and lycopene in Red Cherry pulp CRF show to be related to the good antiproliferative activity found on it. Therefore, this new variety of nutrient-rich purple tomato could be explored as well as the commercial variety Red Cherry, since both are good sources of dietary carotenoids with health-promoting properties. This work was supported by Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP) [grant number 2014/11150-6]; and Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) [grant numbers 306722/2012-7, 307040/2014-3, and 150015/2018-6) from Brazil; and Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) for CIMO [grant numbers Pest OE/AGR/UI0690/2014; SFRH/BPD/68344/2010] from Portugal.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Get PDF
Objective: The aim of this article was to assess how intraoral biodegradation influenced the surface characteristics and friction levels of metallic brackets used during 12 and 24 months of orthodontic treatment and also to compare the static friction generated in these brackets with four different methods of the ligation of orthodontic wires. Material and Methods: Seventy premolar brackets as received from the manufacturer and 224 brackets that were used in previous orthodontic treatments were evaluated in this experiment. The surface morphology and the composition of the deposits found in the brackets were evaluated with rugosimetry, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Friction was analyzed by applying tensile tests simulating sliding mechanics with a 0.019x0.025" steel wire. The static friction levels produced by the following ligation methods were evaluated: loosely attached steel ligature around all four bracket wings, steel ligature attached to only two wings, conventional elastomeric ligation around all 4 bracket wings, and non-conventional Slide® elastomeric ligature. Results: The results demonstrated the presence of biodegradation effects such as corrosion pits, plastic deformation, cracks, and material deposits. The main chemical elements found on these deposits were Carbon and Oxygen. The maximum friction produced by each ligation method changed according to the time of intraoral use. The steel ligature loosely attached to all four bracket wings produced the lowest friction levels in the new brackets. The conventional elastic ligatures generated the highest friction levels. The metallic brackets underwent significant degradation during orthodontic treatment, showing an increase in surface roughness and the deposit of chemical elements on the surface. Conclusion: The levels of static friction decreased with use. The non-conventional elastic ligatures were the best alternative to reduce friction

Evidence on the use of mobile apps during the treatment of breast cancer : systematic review

Background: Cancer is a major cause of morbidity, disability, and mortality worldwide, and breast cancer is the most common cause of death in women. Different modalities of cancer treatment can have adverse effects that reduce the quality of life of patients and lead to treatment interruptions, if not managed properly. The use of mobile technologies has brought innovative possibilities for improving health care. Mobile apps can help individuals manage their own health and well-being and may also promote healthy lifestyles and information access. Objective: The aim of this study was to identify available evidence on the use of mobile apps to provide information and facilitate communication regarding self-care management related to the adverse effects of toxicities owing to breast cancer therapy. Methods: This systematic review includes studies which were identified using a search strategy adapted for each electronic database: CINAHL, Cochrane Library, LILACS, LIVIVO, PubMed, SCOPUS, and Web of Science. In addition, a gray literature search was performed using Google Scholar. All the electronic database searches were conducted on April 17, 2019. Two investigators independently reviewed the titles and abstracts of the studies identified and then read the full text of all selected papers. The quality of the included studies was analyzed by the Cochrane Collaboration Risk of Bias Tool and the Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies. Results: A total of 9 studies which met the eligibility criteria—3 randomized clinical trials and 6 nonrandomized studies published in English from 2010 to 2018—were considered for this systematic review; 396 patients with breast cancer, as well as 40 experts in the medical and nursing fields, and 3 software engineers were included. Conclusions: The evidence from the studies included in this systematic review is currently limited but suggests that mobile apps for women with breast cancer might be an acceptable information source that can improve patient well-being; they can also be used to report symptoms and adverse treatment-related effects and promote self-care. There is a need to test more evidence-based apps in future randomized clinical trials

Environmentally-friendly reduced graphene oxide functionalized with hyaluronic acid for targeted cancer photothermal therapy

Reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO) is one of the most promising nanomaterials for cancer photothermal therapy (PTT) due to its high near infrared (NIR) absorption. However, the rGO producing methods uses dangerous reducing agents, resulting in poor biocompatibility. Additionally, rGO also displays poor colloidal stability and is unable to target cancer cells. These limitations can be improved by using environmentally-friendly reduction methods and by functionalizing this nanomaterial with amphiphilic polymers. In this work, the production of reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO) rGO was performed by using an environmentally-friendly method (reduction with L-ascorbic Acid (LAA)). Then, the obtained rGO was functionalized with an amphiphilic polymer based on hyaluronic acid (HA-g-PMAO) for application in CD44-targeted breast cancer PTTGrants UBI/Santander-Tottainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
