Opening School Doors to Communities and Families: A Social Capital Perspective for Multiparty Collaboration
Multiparty collaboration is largely acknowledged as a best practice strategy for school
counselors. Although collaboration among schools, families, and communities is seen as
necessary for community change and systems transformation, policies and efforts to increase
collaboration in and with schools are a step ahead of theory and research. This article
introduces social capital theory as a lens for school counselors who are working to transform
their communities through multiparty collaboration. Practical suggestions for strengthening
collaborative practice and research on multiparty collaboration are offered
Closing achievement gaps: Roles and tasks of elementary school counselors
Achievement gaps among racial‐ethnic and socioeconomic status groups are an enduring, pervasive, and multifaceted phenomenon. Therefore, efforts aimed at understanding and addressing these gaps must be developmentally and environmentally broad, involving numerous school counselor roles and tasks, including leadership, advocacy, collaboration, and strategic interventions. In this article, we first document achievement gap trends and then provide a framework for understanding and sequencing outcomes that quantify student achievement gaps. Finally, we present research that identifies critical variables influencing achievement gaps and important school counselor roles and tasks aimed at closing these gaps. The article focuses on outcomes across the developmental spectrum from elementary school through postsecondary education
Critical Foundations for Civic Engagement: Reimagining Civic Learning for a University Honors Program
Scholars are calling attention to shortcomings of service-learning, including the development of civic skills and adoption of a social change framework. Informed by this literature, this article uses a mixed-methods case study to detail the development, and initial outcomes, of a civic engagement course intended to lay a critical foundation for future service. This study documents the process of reimagining the class, formerly organized as a service project, and course evaluations and reflections are used to assess outcomes. Initial assessment signals impact in challenging previous assumptions about service, understanding the multifaceted nature of civic engagement, and motivating future responsible engagement

Modeling pain in vitro using nociceptor neurons reprogrammed from fibroblasts
Reprogramming somatic cells from one cell fate to another can generate specific neurons suitable for disease modeling. To maximize the utility of patient-derived neurons, they must model not only disease-relevant cell classes but also the diversity of neuronal subtypes found in vivo and the pathophysiological changes that underlie specific clinical diseases. Here, we identify five transcription factors that reprogram mouse and human fibroblasts into noxious stimulus-detecting (nociceptor) neurons that recapitulate the expression of quintessential nociceptor-specific functional receptors and channels found in adult mouse nociceptor neurons as well as native subtype diversity. Moreover, the derived nociceptor neurons exhibit TrpV1 sensitization to the inflammatory mediator prostaglandin E2 and the chemotherapeutic drug oxaliplatin, modeling the inherent mechanisms underlying inflammatory pain hypersensitivity and painful chemotherapy-induced neuropathy. Using fibroblasts from patients with familial dysautonomia (hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type III), we show that the technique can reveal novel aspects of human disease phenotypes in vitro
The Petrochemistry of Jake_M: A Martian Mugearite
“Jake_M,” the first rock analyzed by the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer instrument on the Curiosity rover, differs substantially in chemical composition from other known martian igneous rocks: It is alkaline (>15% normative nepheline) and relatively fractionated. Jake_M is compositionally similar to terrestrial mugearites, a rock type typically found at ocean islands and continental rifts. By analogy with these comparable terrestrial rocks, Jake_M could have been produced by extensive fractional crystallization of a primary alkaline or transitional magma at elevated pressure, with or without elevated water contents. The discovery of Jake_M suggests that alkaline magmas may be more abundant on Mars than on Earth and that Curiosity could encounter even more fractionated alkaline rocks (for example, phonolites and trachytes).</jats:p
Mars’ Surface Radiation Environment Measured with the Mars Science Laboratory’s Curiosity Rover
The Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) on the Mars Science Laboratory’s Curiosity rover began making detailed measurements of the cosmic ray and energetic particle radiation environment on the surface of Mars on 7 August 2012. We report and discuss measurements of the absorbed dose and dose equivalent from galactic cosmic rays and solar energetic particles on the martian surface for ~300 days of observations during the current solar maximum. These measurements provide insight into the radiation hazards associated with a human mission to the surface of Mars and provide an anchor point with which to model the subsurface radiation environment, with implications for microbial survival times of any possible extant or past life, as well as for the preservation of potential organic biosignatures of the ancient martian environment.</jats:p
