    Cache Attacks Enable Bulk Key Recovery on the Cloud

    Cloud services keep gaining popularity despite the security concerns. While non-sensitive data is easily trusted to cloud, security critical data and applications are not. The main concern with the cloud is the shared resources like the CPU, memory and even the network adapter that provide subtle side-channels to malicious parties. We argue that these side-channels indeed leak fine grained, sensitive information and enable key recovery attacks on the cloud. Even further, as a quick scan in one of the Amazon EC2 regions shows, high percentage -55\%- of users run outdated, leakage prone libraries leaving them vulnerable to mass surveillance. The most commonly exploited leakage in the shared resource systems stem from the cache and the memory. High resolution and the stability of these channels allow the attacker to extract fine grained information. In this work, we employ the \PnP\ attack to retrieve an RSA secret key from a co-located instance. To speed up the attack, we reverse engineer the cache slice selection algorithm for the Intel Xeon E5-2670 v2 that is used in our cloud instances. Finally we employ noise reduction to deduce the RSA private key from the monitored traces. By processing the noisy data we obtain the complete 2048-bit RSA key used during the decryption

    Use of polyethylene glycol coatings for optical fibre humidity sensing

    Humidity induced change in the refractive index and thickness of the polyethylene glycol (PEG) coatings are in situ investigated for a range from 10 to 95%, using an optical waveguide spectroscopic technique. It is experimentally demonstrated that, upon humidity change, the optical and swelling characteristics of the PEG coatings can be employed to build a plastic fibre optic humidity sensor. The sensing mechanism is based on the humidity induced change in the refractive index of the PEG film, which is directly coated onto a polished segment of a plastic optical fibre with dip-coating method. It is observed that PEG, which is a highly hydrophilic material, shows no monotonic linear response to humidity but gives different characteristics for various ranges of humidity levels both in index of refraction and in thickness. It undergoes a physical phase change from a semi-crystal line structure to a gel one at around 80% relative humidity. At this phase change point, a drastic decrease occurs in the index of refraction as well as a drastic increase in the swelling of the PEG film. In addition, PEG coatings are hydrogenated in a vacuum chamber. It is observed that the hydrogen has a preventing effect on the humidity induced phase change in PEG coatings.     Real-world efficacy and safety of Ledipasvir plus Sofosbuvir and Ombitasvir/Paritaprevir/Ritonavir +/- Dasabuvir combination therapies for chronic hepatitis C: A Turkish experience

    Background/Aims: This study aimed to evaluate the real-life efficacy and tolerability of direct-acting antiviral treatments for patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) with/without cirrhosis in the Turkish population.Material and Methods: A total of 4,352 patients with CHC from 36 different institutions in Turkey were enrolled. They received ledipasvir (LDV) and sofosbuvir (SOF)+/- ribavirin (RBV) ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir +/- dasabuvir (PrOD)+/- RBV for 12 or 24 weeks. Sustained virologic response (SVR) rates, factors affecting SVR, safety profile, and hepatocellular cancer (HCC) occurrence were analyzed.Results: SVR12 was achieved in 92.8% of the patients (4,040/4,352) according to intention-to-treat and in 98.3% of the patients (4,040/4,108) according to per-protocol analysis. The SVR12 rates were similar between the treatment regimens (97.2%-100%) and genotypes (95.6%-100%). Patients achieving SVR showed a significant decrease in the mean serum alanine transaminase (ALT) levels (50.90 +/- 54.60 U/L to 17.00 +/- 14.50 U/L) and model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) scores (7.51 +/- 4.54 to 7.32 +/- 3.40) (p<0.05). Of the patients, 2 were diagnosed with HCC during the treatment and 14 were diagnosed with HCC 37.0 +/- 16.0 weeks post-treatment. Higher initial MELD score (odds ratio [OR]: 1.92, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.22-2.38; p=0.023]), higher hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA levels (OR: 1.44, 95% CI: 1.31-2.28; p=0.038), and higher serum ALT levels (OR: 1.38, 95% CI: 1.21-1.83; p=0.042) were associated with poor SVR12. The most common adverse events were fatigue (12.6%), pruritis (7.3%), increased serum ALT (4.7%) and bilirubin (3.8%) levels, and anemia (3.1%).Conclusion: LDV/SOF or PrOD +/- RBV were effective and tolerable treatments for patients with CHC and with or without advanced liver disease before and after liver transplantation.     Modulus of elasticity of loosely cross-linked poly(isobutylene) gels are measured under large compressive deformations. Gels of perfect spherical shape are prepared by the suspension cross-linking technique of dilute toluene solutions of butyl rubber using sulfur monochloride as a cross-linking agent. Compressive deformation is applied by a calibrated stainless steel cantilever to spherical poly(isobutylene) beads of sizes ca. 1.0-4.0 mm in diameter swollen in toluene. The relationship between force and deformation is obtained by using the constitutive relations from molecular theory of elasticity Moduli are measured immediately after applying compression, and after full relaxation which obtains after solvent exudes the gels under compression. The instantaneous moduli are an order of magnitude larger than equilibrium moduli. Results of mechanical measurements, which are presently of a preliminary type, are compared with those from independent thermodynamic estimates of shear moduli

    Dynamic simulation metamodeling using MARS: A case of radar simulation

    Dynamic system simulations require relating the inputs to the multivariate output which can be a function of time space coordinates. In this work, we propose a methodology for the metamodeling of dynamic simulation models via Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS). To handle incomplete output processes, where the simulation model does not produce an output in some steps due to missing inputs, we have devised a two-stage metamodeling scheme. The methodology is demonstrated on a dynamic radar simulation model. The prediction performance of the resulting metamodel is tested with four different sampling techniques (i.e., designs) and 16 sample sizes. We also investigate the effect of alternative coordinate system representations on the metamodeling performance. The results suggest that MARS is an effective method for metamodeling dynamic simulations, particularly, when expert judgment is not readily available. Results also show that there are interactions between the coordinate systems and sampling techniques, and some design-representation-size combinations are very promising in the metamodeling of radar simulations.     Posterior mediastinal goiter

    A patient with chronic cough and recent dysphagia was found to have a retrotracheal mass extending into the mediastinum on chest radiography. A computed tomographic scan confirmed a retrotracheal posterosuperior mediastinal lesion which was believed to have a neurogenic origin. A thyroid 131I scan revealed no uptake of tracer in the chest and results of thyroid function tests were normal. A large retrotracheal colloidal nodular goiter was excised through a right thoracotomy. The diagnostic approach and the safety of surgical access by thoracotomy for thyroid lesions in this unusual site are discussed
