    Estimating the economic benefits of wind energy projects using NREL's JEDI model with Monte Carlo simulation: Coconino and Navajo County, Arizona: Working paper series--06-04

    A process was developed to evaluate the county-level economic benefits from constructing and operating a wind energy project. Specifically, an economic input/output analysis was used in conjunction with Monte Carlo simulation to determine the economic impacts. Two northern-Arizona counties, Coconino County and Navajo County, were analyzed to demonstrate the process. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory's Jobs, Economic Development, and Impacts (JEDI) model is used to estimate the economic benefits generated by both the construction phase and the operations and maintenance (O&M) phase of a wind energy project. As there is uncertainty in some of the required input parameters, Monte Carlo simulation allows the input parameters to be entered as a range. The results of the JEDI model with Monte Carlo simulation analysis produce a distribution for: Jobs during construction; Jobs during the O&M phase; Earnings during the construction phase; Annual Earnings during the O&M phase; Economic activity during the construction phase; Annual Economic Activity during the O&M phase. In addition to these results, a sensitivity analysis was performed and indicated that the input parameters of construction cost, annual operating cost, local share percentage for construction, and local share percentage for high-voltage substation/interconnection affect the results from the JEDI model most significantly and effort should be spent carefully estimating these input parameters

    Robots Need the Ability to Navigate Abusive Interactions

    Researchers are seeing more and more cases of abusive disinhibition towards robots in public realms. Because robots embody gendered identities, poor navigation of antisocial dynamics may reinforce or exacerbate gender-based violence. It is essential that robots deployed in social settings be able to recognize and respond to abuse in a way that minimises ethical risk. Enabling this capability requires designers to first understand the risk posed by abuse of robots, and hence how humans perceive robot-directed abuse. To that end, we experimentally investigated reactions to a physically abusive interaction between a human perpetrator and a victimized agent. Given extensions of gendered biases to robotic agents, as well as associations between an agent’s human likeness and the experiential capacity attributed to it, we quasi-manipulated the victim’s humanness (via use of a human actor vs. NAO robot) and gendering (via inclusion of stereotypically masculine vs. feminine cues in their presentation) across four video-recorded reproductions of the interaction. Analysis of data from 417 participants, each of whom watched one of the four videos, indicates that the intensity of emotional distress felt by an observer is associated with their gender identification, previous experience with victimization, hostile sexism, and support for social stratification, as well as the victim’s gendering

    Effects of Strip-cropping on Small Mammal Population Dynamics in Soybean Agroecosystems

    Author Institution: Department of Zoology, Miami UniversityThe present study examined the effects of strip-cropping and harvesting practices on small mammal population dynamics in soybean agroecosystems. Small mammals were live-trapped in four treatments (three replicates each): soybean monoculture, soybean-clover, soybean-buckwheat, and soybean-corn. Peromyscus maniculatus was found in all four treatment types, whereas Mus musculus resided mainly in the soybean-corn treatment. Peromyscus population densities were significantly greater in the soybean monoculture during the week preceding harvest than in the soybean-clover strip-cropped treatment. Peromyscus population densities immediately increased following harvesting practices, then declined. Short-term changes in density were attributed to seed accessibility; long-term changes appeared to be in response to reduced crop cover resulting in increased predation. Populations of Mus were unaffected by harvest practices. Interestingly, more Peromyscus dispersed from strip-cropped treatments than from the monoculture (control) treatment. Female deer mice were found to have larger mean home ranges in the corn strip-cropped treatment than in the monoculture or buckwheat strip-cropped treatment suggesting an impact of spatial resource patterning on small mammal population dynamics

    Investigation of the distribution of transuranic radionuclides in marine sediment at the Montebello Islands, Western Australia

    Three nuclear weapons tests were conducted in the 1950s at the Montebello Islands, Western Australia. The detonations were of different yields and configurations (two tower tests, one ship test), and led to substantial radionuclide contamination within the surrounding terrestrial and marine ecosystems. The region possesses great ecological and recreational significance, particularly within the marine environment. However, studies conducted so far have largely neglected the marine ecosystem which makes up the majority of the Montebello Island Marine Park and in which most test fallout would have deposited. Here we investigated the distribution of the transuranic radionuclides 238Pu, 239,240Pu and 241Am in marine sediment from the Montebello Islands. Marine sediment samples near Operation Mosaic G2 and Operation Hurricane were collected and analysed by gamma and alpha spectrometry. Activity concentrations of 239,240Pu across both series ranged from 45 to 2900 Bq kg−1, while 241Am levels ranged from 2.8 to 70 Bq kg−1. Higher activity concentrations were observed in sediment near the land-based, higher yield Mosaic G2 test, compared with the ship-based, lower yield Hurricane test. Sediment samples located closer to the detonation site were also observed to have higher activity concentrations. Radioactive particles of 0.94 mm and 1.5 mm in diameter were identified by analysis of size-fractioned sediment via investigation of 152Eu levels, photostimulated autoradiography and point gamma spectroscopy. Particles were confirmed to have transuranic radionuclide interiors, with surface coatings which were dominated by vitrified CaCO3. Their long-term resistance to weathering and subsequent persistence in the marine environment can therefore be attributed to their coated structural form. Our study confirms the persistence of transuranic radionuclides in Montebello Island marine sediment and highlights the need for additional studies to improve our understanding of the nuclear legacy in this region

    Whole genome sequencing of nearly isogenic WMI and WLI inbred rats identifies genes potentially involved in depression and stress reactivity

    The WMI and WLI inbred rats were generated from the stress-prone, and not yet fully inbred, Wistar Kyoto (WKY) strain. These were selected using bi-directional selection for immobility in the forced swim test and were then sib-mated for over 38 generations. Despite the low level of genetic diversity among WKY progenitors, the WMI substrain is significantly more vulnerable to stress relative to the counter-selected WLI strain. Here we quantify numbers and classes of genomic sequence variants distinguishing these substrains with the long term goal of uncovering functional and behavioral polymorphism that modulate sensitivity to stress and depression-like phenotypes. DNA from WLI and WMI was sequenced using Illumina xTen, IonTorrent, and 10X Chromium linked-read platforms to obtain a combined coverage of ~ 100X for each strain. We identified 4,296 high quality homozygous SNPs and indels between the WMI and WLI. We detected high impact variants in genes previously implicated in depression (e.g. Gnat2), depression-like behavior (e.g. Prlr, Nlrp1a), other psychiatric disease (e.g. Pou6f2, Kdm5a, Reep3, Wdfy3), and responses to psychological stressors (e.g. Pigr). High coverage sequencing data confirm that the two substrains are nearly coisogenic. Nonetheless, the small number of sequence variants contributes to numerous well characterized differences including depression-like behavior, stress reactivity, and addiction related phenotypes.     Within- and Between-Home Variability in Indoor-Air Insecticide Levels during Pregnancy among an Inner-City Cohort from New York City

    BACKGROUND: Residential insecticide use is widespread in the United States, but few data are available on the persistence and variability in levels in the indoor environment. OBJECTIVE: The study aim was to assess within- and between-home variability in indoor-air insecticides over the final 2 months of pregnancy among a cohort of African-American and Dominican women from New York City. METHODS: Women not employed outside the home were enrolled between February 2001 and May 2004 (n = 102); 9 insecticides and an adjuvant were measured in 48-hr personal air samples and 2-week integrated indoor air samples collected sequentially for 7.0 ± 2.3 weeks (n = 337 air samples). RESULTS: Sixty-one percent of the women reported using pest control during the air samplings. Chlorpyrifos, diazinon, and propoxur were detected in 99–100% of personal and indoor samples (range, 0.4–641 ng/m(3)). Piperonyl butoxide (a pyrethroid adjuvant) was detected in 45.5–68.5% (0.2–608 ng/m(3)). There was little within-home variability and no significant difference in air concentrations within homes over time (p ≥ 0.2); between-home variability accounted for 88% of the variance in the indoor air levels of propoxur, 92% in chlorpyrifos, 94% in diazinon, and 62% in piperonyl butoxide (p < 0.001). Indoor and maternal personal air insecticide levels were highly correlated (r = 0.7–0.9, p < 0.001). Diazinon and chlorpyrifos levels declined 5-fold between 2001 and 2004 but were detected in all homes 1.5 and 2.5 years, respectively, after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ban on their residential use. CONCLUSION: Results showed that the insecticides were persistent in the home with little variability in air concentrations over the 2 months and contributed to chronic maternal inhalation exposures during pregnancy

    A High-Resolution Radio Continuum Study Of The Dwarf Irregular Galaxy IC 10

    We present high-resolution e–MERLIN radio continuum maps of the Dwarf Irregular galaxy IC 10 at 1.5 GHz and 5 GHz. We detect 11 compact sources at 1.5 GHz, 5 of which have complementary detections at 5 GHz. We classify 3 extended sources as compact HII regions within IC 10, 5 sources as contaminating background galaxies and identify 3 sources which require additional observa- tions to classify. We do not expect that any of these 3 sources are Supernova Remnants as they will likely be resolved out at the assumed distance of IC 10 (0.7 Mpc). We correct integrated flux densities of IC 10 from the literature for contamination by unrelated background sources and ob- tain updated flux density measurements of 354 ± 11 mJy at 1.5 GHz and 199 ± 9 mJy at 4.85 GHz. The background contamination does not contribute significantly to the overall radio emission from IC 10, so previous analysis concerning its integrated radio properties remain valid

    Evaluation of a multidisciplinary lipid clinic to improve the care of individuals with severe lipid conditions: A RE-AIM framework analysis

    BACKGROUND: Individuals with complex dyslipidemia, or those with medication intolerance, are often difficult to manage in primary care. They require the additional attention, expertise, and adherence counseling that occurs in multidisciplinary lipid clinics (MDLCs). We conducted a program evaluation of the first year of a newly implemented MDLC utilizing the RE-AIM (reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, and maintenance) framework to provide empirical data not only on program effectiveness, but also on components important to local sustainability and future generalizability. METHODS: The purpose of the MDLC is to increase the uptake of guideline-based care for lipid conditions. Established in 2019, the MDLC provides care via a centralized clinic location within the healthcare system. Primary care providers and cardiologists were invited to refer individuals with lipid conditions. Using a pre/post-study design, we evaluated the implementation outcomes from the MDLC using the RE-AIM framework. RESULTS: In 2019, 420 referrals were made to the MDLC (reach). Referrals were made by 19% (148) of the 796 active cardiology and primary care providers, with an average of 35 patient referrals per month in 2019 (SD 12) (adoption). The MDLC saw 83 patients in 2019 (reach). Additionally, 50% (41/82) had at least one follow-up MDLC visit, and 12% (10/82) had two or more follow-up visits in 2019 (implementation). In patients seen by the MDLC, we found an improved diagnosis of specific lipid conditions (FH (familial hypercholesterolemia), hypertriglyceridemia, and dyslipidemia), increased prescribing of evidence-based therapies, high rates of medication prior authorization approvals, and significant reductions in lipid levels by lipid condition subgroup (effectiveness). Over time, the operations team decided to transition from in-person follow-up to telehealth appointments to increase capacity and sustain the clinic (maintenance). CONCLUSIONS: Despite limited reach and adoption of the MDLC, we found a large intervention effect that included improved diagnosis, increased prescribing of guideline-recommended treatments, and clinically significant reduction of lipid levels. Attention to factors including solutions to decrease the large burden of unseen referrals, discussion of the appropriate number and duration of visits, and sustainability of the clinic model could aid in enhancing the success of the MDLC and improving outcomes for more patients throughout the system
