Trust, distrust, and trustworthiness in argumentation: Virtues and fallacies

    Get PDF
What is trust? How does it function as a primary virtue for persuasive arguments? How does its presumption contribute to the effectiveness of an argument’s persuasiveness? This presentation will explore these questions and the controversy among scholars regarding how trust is generated and under what conditions it is lost. We will also discuss whether inauthentic trustworthiness is a manipulation used for gaining a fallacious advantage in argumentation

Effects of Plant Saponins on Forage Digestion and Performance of Grazing Beef Cattle

The inclusion of Micro-Aid(&reg) (MA) in protein supplements improved rumen DM and NDF degradability via a decrease in rumen particulate passage rate, but was not successful at improving apparent total tract digestibility. This improvement in rumen digestion may have the potential to increase the supply of nutrients to the small intestine for subsequent improvements in animal performance. Micro-Aidďż˝ successfully suppressed protozoa after continuous administration, over 20 days, suggesting that complete adaptation to saponins by protozoa was not observed. Also, the reduction in protozoa has been shown to increase microbial efficiency (Veira, 1986) which would be beneficial to lactating cows that have a greater metabolizable protein requirement than cannulated steers or even gestating cows. The inclusion of MA did not impact performance of stocker steers or beef cows during the supplementation period. However, MA did improve calf performance when supplementing cows during early lactation. This advantage was lost due to compensatory gain after supplementation ceased, but could prove to be of great importance to a fall-calving cow herd, consuming low-quality forage for its entire lactation period. There was a non-significant increase in milk yield of 2.4% during early lactation, similar to other findings. Feeding frequency of MA needs to be evaluated as a potential role in animal performance. These performance studies intermittently supplied MA as opposed to a continuous supply. This may negatively impact the microflora populations intermittently and never sustain a stable environment. It would also be beneficial to evaluate the use of MA in combination with non-protein nitrogen. With the rising costs of feed protein, this may be an economical option to upgrade the use of non-protein nitrogen in grazing cow diets. More research needs to be conducted to determine the impact of daily provision of MA and its interaction with diet on performance of grazing animals.Department of Animal Scienc

Perceived Effectiveness of Acupuncture: Findings From the National Health Interview Survey

Background: Knowledge of perceived benefit from acupuncture treatment is important to predict who is using acupuncture, to inform physicians of the possible benefits of acupuncture, to determine where rigorous research should be focused, and to help policy makers predict future demand. Objectives: To determine the proportions of survey respondents who reported perceived effectiveness of acupuncture treatment for specific conditions; and to determine the association of specified demographic variables with perceived effectiveness. Design, Setting, and Participants: Publicly available data from 31,044 noninstitutionalized US adults who participated in the 2002 National Health Interview Survey, a cross-sectional in-home computer-assisted interview. Outcome Measures: The proportions of participants reporting “any help” and “great help” for perceived effectiveness across conditions treated and per condition treated; and the association of the subgroups within age, sex, and body mass index (BMI), along with the subgroups Asian race and Chinese ethnicity, with “any help” of acupuncture treatment across conditions treated. Results: Of the 1,274 respondents who reported having consulted an acupuncturist, 329 had used acupuncture in the last 12 months; 276 had used acupuncture to treat a specific condition. A total of 86% of respondents reported being helped by acupuncture, while 45% reported being greatly helped across conditions treated. In an examination of specific conditions treated, the range for “any help” was 98% to 67%, and 98% to 7% in the “great help” outcome. Older age and obesity were negatively associated with perceived effectiveness statistically but not clinically. Asian race and Chinese ethnicity were not statistically significantly associated with perceived effectiveness. Conclusions: Acupuncture is perceived to be effective by most respondents who used it to treat a specific condition. Older age and obesity are negatively associated with perceived effectiveness, but not at a clinically significant level. A larger sample of Asian and Chinese subgroups is needed to determine if there is an association of these subgroups with perceived benefit

A Retrospective Review of Thiazolidinediones with Development of a Troglitazone Conversion Protocol

The objective of this paper was (1) to assess compliance with the National Veterans Affairs Guidelines for the use of troglitazone and rosiglitazone and (2) to develop and implement a conversion protocol that allows effective management of patients receiving troglitazone. A retrospective chart review was conducted to assess adherence to guidelines for all patients receiving troglitazone and rosiglitazone at the medical center. Appropriateness of therapy through indication evaluation, safety through alanine aminotransferase (ALT) monitoring compliance, and efficacy through hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) changes were used to assess adherence. According to National Veterans Affairs (VA) Guidelines, 68% of troglitazone and 63% of rosiglitazone patients had an appropriate indication for the use of these agents. Baseline ALT levels were obtained in 40% of troglitazone and 71% of rosiglitazone patients. Full compliance with continual ALT monitoring was seen in 6 and 54% of patients, respectively. Goal HbA1c was achieved in 57 and 29% of patients, respectively. Of the 33 patients receiving troglitazone, 19 were converted to rosiglitazone therapy; 11 were maintained on current regimens without troglitazone, and 3 were lost to follow up. Adherence to guidelines needs to be reinforced, in particular, compliance with ALT monitoring. However, there were no reported cases of hepatotoxicity in the patients reviewed. Many patients did not achieve a HbA1
