    The effect of surface temperature and Reynolds number on the leeward heat-transfer for a shuttle orbiter

    The effect of windward surface temperature on the heat transfer to the leeward surface of the shuttle orbiter was investigated. Heat-transfer distributions, surface-pressure distributions, and schlieren photographs were obtained for an 0.01-scale model of the 37-0 shuttle orbiter at angles-of-attack of 30 deg and of 40 deg. Similar data were obtained for a fuselage-only configuration at angles-of-attack of 30 deg and of 90 deg. Data were obtained for various Mach numbers, Reynolds numbers, and surface temperatures

    Criminal Defectors Lead to the Emergence of Cooperation in an Experimental, Adversarial Game

    While the evolution of cooperation has been widely studied, little attention has been devoted to adversarial settings wherein one actor can directly harm another. Recent theoretical work addresses this issue, introducing an adversarial game in which the emergence of cooperation is heavily reliant on the presence of “Informants,” actors who defect at first-order by harming others, but who cooperate at second-order by punishing other defectors. We experimentally study this adversarial environment in the laboratory with human subjects to test whether Informants are indeed critical for the emergence of cooperation. We find in these experiments that, even more so than predicted by theory, Informants are crucial for the emergence and sustenance of a high cooperation state. A key lesson is that successfully reaching and maintaining a low defection society may require the cultivation of criminals who will also aid in the punishment of others

    Restoration and Reexamination of Apollo Lunar Dust Detector Data from Original Telemetry Files

    We are recovering the original telemetry (Figure I) from the Apollo Dust, Thermal, Radiation Environment Monitor (DTREM) experiment, more commonly known as the Dust Detector, and producing full time resolution (54 second) data sets for release through the Planetary Data System (PDS). The primary objective of the experiment was to evaluate the effect of dust deposition, temperature, and radiation damage on solar cells on the lunar surface. The monitor was a small box consisting of three solar cells and thermistors mounted on the ALSEP (Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package) central station. The Dust Detector was carried on Apollo's 11, 12, 14 and 15. The Apollo 11 DTREM was powered by solar cells and only operated for a few months as planned. The Apollo 12, 14, and 15 detectors operated for 5 to 7 years, returning data every 54 seconds, consisting of voltage outputs from the three solar cells and temperatures measured by the three thermistors. The telemetry was received at ground stations and held on the Apollo Housekeeping (known as "Word 33") tapes. made available to the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) by Yosio Nakamura (University of Texas Institute for Geophysics). We have converted selected parts of the telemetry into uncalibrated and calibrated output voltages and temperatures

    Non-linear Pattern Matching with Backtracking for Non-free Data Types

    Non-free data types are data types whose data have no canonical forms. For example, multisets are non-free data types because the multiset {a,b,b}\{a,b,b\} has two other equivalent but literally different forms {b,a,b}\{b,a,b\} and {b,b,a}\{b,b,a\}. Pattern matching is known to provide a handy tool set to treat such data types. Although many studies on pattern matching and implementations for practical programming languages have been proposed so far, we observe that none of these studies satisfy all the criteria of practical pattern matching, which are as follows: i) efficiency of the backtracking algorithm for non-linear patterns, ii) extensibility of matching process, and iii) polymorphism in patterns. This paper aims to design a new pattern-matching-oriented programming language that satisfies all the above three criteria. The proposed language features clean Scheme-like syntax and efficient and extensible pattern matching semantics. This programming language is especially useful for the processing of complex non-free data types that not only include multisets and sets but also graphs and symbolic mathematical expressions. We discuss the importance of our criteria of practical pattern matching and how our language design naturally arises from the criteria. The proposed language has been already implemented and open-sourced as the Egison programming language

    Insertion of an uncharged polypeptide into the mitochondrial inner membrane does not require a trans-bilayer electrochemical potential: effects of positive charges

    AbstractMitochondria with a ruptured outer membrane exhibited impaired import into this membrane of an outer membrane fusion protein containing the signal-anchor sequence of Mas70p. However, the Mas70p signal-anchor efficiently targeted and inserted the protein directly into exposed regions of the inner membrane. Import into the inner membrane was dependent on δψ and this dependence was due to the presence of the positively-charged amino acids located at positions 2, 7, and 9 of the signal-anchor. In contrast to wild-type signal-anchor, mutants lacking the positively-charged residues mediated import into the inner membrane in both the presence and absence of δψ. The results suggest two conclusions: (1) δψ-dependent import of the signal-anchor sequence was due exclusively to an effect of δψ on the positively-charged domain of the signal-anchor, rather than to an effect of δψ on a property of the inner membrane import machinery; (2) in the absence of δψ, the positively-charged domain of the signal-anchor prevented the otherwise import-competent signal-anchor from inserting into the membrane. This suggests that the positively-charged domain leads import across the inner membrane, and that dqi is required to vectorially clear this domain in order to allow the distal region of the signal-anchor to enter the translocation pathway. The implications of these findings on the mechanism of import into the mitochondrial inner membrane and matrix are discussed

    Constructing applicative functors

    Applicative functors define an interface to computation that is more general, and correspondingly weaker, than that of monads. First used in parser libraries, they are now seeing a wide range of applications. This paper sets out to explore the space of non-monadic applicative functors useful in programming. We work with a generalization, lax monoidal functors, and consider several methods of constructing useful functors of this type, just as transformers are used to construct computational monads. For example, coends, familiar to functional programmers as existential types, yield a range of useful applicative functors, including left Kan extensions. Other constructions are final fixed points, a limited sum construction, and a generalization of the semi-direct product of monoids. Implementations in Haskell are included where possible
