Flywheel energy storage system with homopolar electrodynamic magnetic bearing
The goal of this research was to evaluate the potential of homopolar electrodynamic magnetic bearings for flywheel energy storage systems (FESSs). The primary target was a FESS for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites; however, the design can also be easily adapted for Earth-based applications. The main advantage of Homopolar Electrodynamic Bearings compared to more conventional Active Magnetic Bearings (AMB) is simplicity and very low power rating of its electronics, resulting in higher system reliability - a critical factor for space applications. Design, Fabrication, and Testing of a 3D Printer Based Microfluidic System
A pneumatically actuated PDMS based microfluidic devices were designed and fabricated by soft-lithography. Two types of molds were fabricated out of different material for this experiment. The first mold, (device 1), was fabricated from a sheet of Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) material, similar to Plexiglas. The device features were micro-engraved onto the face of the material. The second mold, (device 2), was fabricated from the use of fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing. The pumping efficiency of the PDMS devices was analyzed through the characterization of the micro-pumps flowrate with respect to the pumps driving pressure and the actuation frequency. Tested at a driving pressure of 10psi, the flowrate for device 1 peaked at 75µL/min with a 7Hz actuation frequency before failing, while device 2 peaked at 498µL/min with a 15Hz actuation frequency.
Using the techniques of rapid prototyping and fused deposition modelling a pneumatically actuated 3D printer based micro-pump and micro-mixer are fabricated. The devices were fabricated using a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) material as an alternative material to the present polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The micro-pump’s fluid flow output was analyzed through the characterization of the micro-pumps flowrate with respect to the pumps driving pressure and the actuation frequency. Testing showed that a maximum flowrate of 1120µL/min was achieved at an actuation frequency of 10Hz with an applied driving pressure of 40psi. A qualitative mixing performance was conducted with the micro-mixer. The diffusion of two dyes was tested under an active mix and non-active mix condition. Testing showed that the active mixing condition resulted in a complete diffusion as opposed to the non-mixing condition which partially diffused. As a proof of concept for biological testing, E. coli and E.coli anti-bodies were mixes to measure the capturing efficiency. The results showed that the active mixing resulted in about 50% capturing efficiency as opposed to the non-mixing which resulted in 33% capturing efficiency
Processing Trauma in the Hebrew Bible
From a contemporary perspective, many of the colourful characters in the Hebrew Bible may have experienced various levels of trauma which affected their thoughts, feelings and behaviours as recorded in the text. As part of a scholarly tradition of applying modern diagnostic terminology to historical personalities, this study connects various Biblical stories to an implicit theme of trauma that runs through much of the larger Jewish narrative. Such exploration provides a unique perspective in contrast to more traditional biblical interpretations that have largely ignored these specific aspects of trauma. Strategies of coping, healing, survival, and resilience can be further gained from these biblical examples that are of potential relevance to modern modes of psychotherapy, particularly in a university graduate-level setting

Enwau ac Anryfeddodau Ynys Prydain and a Tradition of Topographical Wonders in Medieval Britain
This paper attempts to determine the possible use of the Wonders tradition in later medieval Britain. Enwau ac Anryfeddodau Ynys Prydain and various English chronicles appropriate a marvelous landscape from a partially shared, circulating tradition of British Wonders. I will argue that for both the Welsh and English writers, the Wonders of the Island of Britain are a significant aspect of their nationalist agenda and an important component of the ‘Matter of Britain’. Additionally, I will note that the manuscript context of Enwau ac Anryfeddodau Ynys Prydain convincingly suggests that it was thought of less as a translation (from potential Latin sources) or a geographical treatise and more as cyfarwyddyd (the traditional narrative material or lore of medieval Wales). By upholding the Wonders as Welsh tradition, the Welsh establish themselves as the rightful custodians of the mythos of Prydain (Britain) and its mythological geography that was once theirs
