Structuring Joint Action Routines: A Strategy for Facilitating Communication and Language Development in the Classroom
The study of early child language has produced a wealth of new data and conÂcomitant theories over the past decade, and these new perspectives offer important imÂplications to those of us engaged in clinical practice. We have noted elsewhere that this current literature on early child language has specific implications for designing apÂpropriate targets, contexts, and procedures for language therapy (McLean and Snyder-ÂMcLean, 1978; McLean, Snyder-McLean, and Sack, 1983). In this article, we will conÂcentrate on these two latter areas: contexts and procedures for language intervention and, more specifically, on the combination of these elements in the form of structured joint action routines
Preface
Dear Reader, we are delighted to present the autumn issue of the UCL Journal of Law and Jurisprudence. This issue distinguishes itself through the relevance of its themes, the rigour and depth of the research undertaken, and the clarity of the ideas presented. We believe these qualities reflect the spirit of the Journal as an inclusive yet aspirational legal publication
Gordon Brown's misplaced Smithian appeal : the eclipse of sympathy in changing British welfare norms
Gordon Brown has eagerly lauded his fellow Kirkcaldy citizen, Adam Smith, as his main policy inspiration. This article tests the rigour of such a claim by matching Brown's promotion of Smithian âsympathyâ as the centrepiece of his programme for government with the changes introduced by his Treasury to the British welfare model. In the 1970s, Thomas Wilson showed that the traditions of the post-war British welfare state were compatible with a modified form of Smithian sympathy socialised at the level of the state. New Labour has set about reforming the welfare model with respect to both its underlying institutions and the basic subjectivities of its recipients. I show that Brown's substantive preference for an asset-based system of welfare moves those subjectivities away from the ârelational selfâ of Smithian sympathy and towards a much more âautonomous selfâ. Consequently, I conclude that it is stretching Smith's concept of sympathy too far, even in a modified socialised form, to associate it with New Labour's asset-based system of welfare
Seismic Analysis of Concrete Dam by Using Finite Element Method
This paper reports a brief study on linear seismic analysis of Sg. Kinta Concrete Dam. The analysis was conducted in order to determine the performance and behaviour of the dam under seismic excitation. The dam was modelled as two-dimensional and developed based on the design drawing that is obtained from Angkasa Consulting Services Sdn. Bhd. The seismic analysis of the dam is conducted using finite element analysis software package LUSAS 14.3 and the dam has been analyse as a plain stress problem with a linear consideration. A set of historic data, with E1 Centro earthquake acceleration of about 0.50g is used as an earthquake excitation. The natural frequency and mode shape up to fifth mode of the dam has been obtained from the analysis to show the differences of the stress and deformation between each mode. The maximum horizontal and vertical stress of Sg. Kinta dam was found and the distribution of them was discussed in form of contours. The deformation of the dam were also been discussed by comparing the maximum displacement for each mode shaped
The utility of B-type natriuretic peptide in predicting postoperative cardiac events and mortality in patients undergoing major emergency non-cardiac surgery
B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels predict cardiovascular risk in several settings. We hypothesized that they would identify individuals at increased risk of complications and mortality following major emergency non-cardiac surgery.Forty patients were studied with a primary end-point of a new post-operative cardiac event, and/or development of significant ECG changes, and/or cardiac death. The main secondary outcome was all cause mortality at 6 months. Preoperative BNP levels were higher in 11 patients who suffered a new postoperative cardiac event (p=0.001) and predicted this outcome with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.85 (CI=0.72-0.98,p=0.001). A pre-operative BNP value >170pg.ml-1 has a sensitivity of 82% and a specificity of 79% for the primary end-point. In this small study, pre-operative BNP levels identify patients undergoing major emergency non-cardiac surgery who are at increased risk of early post-operative cardiac events. Larger studies are required to confirm these data.Peer reviewedPreprin
Conditional Random Fields and Supervised Learning in Automated Skin Lesion Diagnosis
Many subproblems in automated skin lesion diagnosis (ASLD) canbe unified under a single generalization of assigning a label, from an predefinedset, to each pixel in an image. We first formalize this generalizationand then present two probabilistic models capable of solving it. The firstmodel is based on independent pixel labeling using maximum a-posteriori(MAP) estimation. The second model is based on conditional randomfields (CRFs), where dependencies between pixels are defined using agraph structure. Furthermore, we demonstrate how supervised learningand an appropriate training set can be used to automatically determineall model parameters. We evaluate both models\u27 ability to segment achallenging dataset consisting of 116 images and compare our results to5 previously published methods
Rear end crashes
Due to the common occurrence of rear end collisions in South Australia, and the costliness of Compulsory Third Party (CTP) claims associated with them, a study was undertaken into the nature of, and possible countermeasures for, rear end collisions. This study included an analysis of five years of police-reported crash data, an analysis of a sample of rear end crashes investigated as part of the CASR metropolitan in-depth crash study, and a literature review concerned with countermeasures for rear end crashes. The most common factors contributing to these types of crashes are the lack of protection for right turning vehicles and the inadequate allocation of attention by drivers to the driving task. Countermeasures are available for both of these contributing factors. Providing greater protection for right turning vehicles requires road-based countermeasures, while the most promising countermeasure for inadequate allocation of attention is the installation in vehicles of collision avoidance systems. However, the latter countermeasure will only be available after further testing and refinement of current prototype systems.M.R.J. Baldock, A.D. Long, V.L. Lindsay and A.J. McLea
Spectropolarimetric observations of Herbig Ae/Be Stars I: HiVIS spectropolarimetric calibration and reduction techniques
Using the HiVIS spectropolarimeter built for the Haleakala 3.7m AEOS
telescope in Hawaii, we are collecting a large number of high precision
spectropolarimetrc observations of stars. In order to precisely measure very
small polarization changes, we have performed a number of polarization
calibration techniques on the AEOS telescope and HiVIS spectrograph. We have
extended our dedicated IDL reduction package and have performed some hardware
upgrades to the instrument. We have also used the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter
on CFHT to verify the HiVIS results with back-to-back observations of MWC 361
and HD163296. Comparision of this and other HiVIS data with stellar
observations from the ISIS and WW spectropolarimeters in the literature further
shows the usefulness of this instrument.Comment: 35 pages, 44 figures, Accepted by PAS
