Unscripted: Bruce & Flora McLean
From the gallery information sheet: “One Paved Court and Terra-Arte are honoured to present UNSCRIPTED Bruce Mclean & Flora Mclean, their third exhibition together, and are proud to present you with a selection of finished work by this duet, sculptor and father Bruce and fashion designer and daughter Flora, set against drawings, sketchbooks, magazines, photos, catalogues and other pieces of studio work and materials that inform their practice.
The show focuses on the dialogue between Bruce’s and Flora’s extraordinary creative minds; on
the projects and objects that come out of their shared studio based in in West London, although
each of them have a separate practice and work totally independently, thus offering a better
understanding of their creative processes and tracing what goes into the process of making.
… UNSCRIPTED provides a rare opportunity to experience the works and artistic vision of Bruce and Flora as they come from their studio and with the chance to understand a little bit about their shared lives. It encapsulates a lively and challenging relationship and work production between them while placing strong emphasis on the idea that contemporary conceptual works more often embrace interdisciplinary approaches than the historical Conceptual Art, that has in Bruce’s case, a predecessor in the 1960s.
…
It is these connections and unsettling spirits of both Mcleans, Bruce and Flora, and the traces of a
shared interest between their works beyond the boundaries of art disciplines that this exhibition
wants to capture. UNSCRIPTED is curated by Dr Paula Terra Neale and is the first in a series of exhibitions under her own curatorial practice TERRA-ARTE, exploring the relationship between duets of artists working and living alongside each other, exploring both art and life’s aspects.
BOWLS BERETS BANGLES FROCKS PRINTS PLATES
A collaborative exhibition by Bruce and Flora McLean of fashion-cum-art ran at the CCA Galleries International in St Helier, Jersey from 2-28th March 2018.
Bruce and Flora share a London studio and produce work that is funny, brilliant and accessible. Bruce’s ceramics, monoprints and silkscreens were exhibited alongside Flora’s rubber berets, cuffs and eyewear and a screening of ‘Not a Peep’, the latest, highly stylised short animation by Piers Alsop, that fuses the surreal world of Magritte with the sophistication of House of Flora.
On 9th March 2018 Bruce and Flora held a live performance at the gallery with Jordan Ajadi from the Royal Ballet
A Qualitative Study of Federal Employee Whistleblowing and Reprisal for Whistleblowing
Federal employee whistleblowing is essential to holding government officials accountable. The U.S. Office of Special Counsel (OSC) was established in 1979 to provide a secure channel for federal government employees to report wrongdoing while protecting them from reprisal. More statutory protections were enacted with the Whistleblower Protection Act (WPA) in 1989; however, deficiencies in the WPA led to the eventual passage of the Whistleblower Protection Enhancement Act in 2012. The problem is that the literature on whistleblowing fails to distinguish the OSC as the Executive Branch whistleblower protection agency nor recognize its annual reports and surveys as the only known source of data on federal employee whistleblowing. This is problematic because academia’s unfamiliarity with the OSC’s data published since 1979, limited access to whistleblowers, and statutory provisions for anonymity confound research in this field. This study used multiple qualitative methods to examine OSC’s annual reports and surveys, and interviewed whistleblowers to answer the research questions: 1) What do the OSC annual reports reveal about federal employee whistleblower disclosures and reprisal for whistleblowing from 1979 to 2022? 2) What do OSC surveys of complainants reveal about the effectiveness of whistleblower protection from reprisal from 1996 to 2022? 3) What do actual federal employee whistleblowers reveal about the extent of whistleblower disclosures necessary to remedy wrongdoing in an organization? The theoretical framework was the Anvari et al. Hierarchical Structure model of whistleblowing. This study found that despite legal protections, whistleblowers experience high rates of reprisal and low rates of obtaining the desired result at the OSC. This research has policy implications and fills a gap in the literature
Establishing and Evaluating Equitable Partnerships
In this paper, the authors present two models for establishing and evaluating partnerships. They also provide a working definition of a partnership, propose strategies for identifying resources for starting and maintaining partnerships, and provide several methods for evaluating them. Their purpose is to increase understanding of the dynamics of building stronger, more equity-based partnerships. Models recommended are the Give-Get and Double Rainbow
Nesting of Red-Winged Blacbirds in Cattails and Commed Reed Grass in Mentor Harsh
Author Institution: Department of Biology, John Carrol UniversityDuring summer 1976, a study of habitat selection by the red-winged blackbird, Agelaius phoeniceus, was conducted. Mentor Marsh near Mentor, Ohio was chosen because of its unique geologic and botanical history. A swamp forest prior to 1959, the area is now a marsh composed of Typha latifolia, T. angustifolia, and Phragmites australis. Preferences of A. phoeniceus for each of these plants were investigated, and T. latifolia was significantly most chosen. Presumed advantages include rigidity, easy nest accessibility, and wide spacing to facilitate nest defense. Additional features of habitat selected such as available perches, proximity of open water, and edge effect were investigated. If rapid succession to monodominant stands of P. australis continues at the present rate, the nesting red-winged blackbird population may decrease sharply
THE ROLE OF LEAD-UP DRILLS IN TUMBLING
An analysis of three commonly used lead-up drills in tumbling was undertaken to assess the validity in replicating key mechanical variables of a foundation tumble row. Six gymnasts (3 intermediate and 3 elite) were analyzed using a 12-camera Vicon analysis system operating at 250 Hz. Data were then modeled and filtered through Vicon Workstation and processed through Matlab (Version 7.0). Similarities were assumed if the difference in performance was less than one standard deviation away from the mean for variables from the tumble row. Results indicate that the corbette and set jump drills were more likely to produce mechanical variables in preparation for the "tumble row" than the round-off drill. Elite gymnasts in general displayed mechanical characteristics more related to superior performance than the intermediate gymnasts both in the drills and the "tumble row"
