    Weyl calculus and dual pairs

We consider a dual pair (G,G′)(G,G'), in the sense of Howe, with GG compact acting on L2(Rn)L^2(\mathbb R^n) for an appropriate nn via the Weil Representation. Let G~\widetilde{G} be the preimage of GG in the metaplectic group. Given a genuine irreducible unitary representation Π\Pi of G~\widetilde{G} we compute the Weyl symbol of orthogonal projection onto L2(Rn)ΠL^2(\mathbb R^n)_\Pi, the Π\Pi-isotypic component. We apply the result to obtain an explicit formula for the character of the corresponding irreducible unitary representation Π′\Pi' of G′~\widetilde{G'} and to compute of the wave front set of Π′\Pi' by elementary means

Semisimple orbital integrals on the symplectic space for a real reductive dual pair

We prove a Weyl Harish-Chandra integration formula for the action of a reductive dual pair on the corresponding symplectic space WW. As an intermediate step, we introduce a notion of a Cartan subspace and a notion of an almost semisimple element in the symplectic space WW. We prove that the almost semisimple elements are dense in WW. Finally, we provide estimates for the orbital integrals associated with the different Cartan subspaces in WW

System for cooling turbopumps used in cryogenic fluid storage facilities is described. Technique uses thermodynamic propellant vent to intercept pump heat at desired conditions. Cooling system uses hydrogen from outside source or residual hydrogen from cryogenic storage tank

A laboratory investigation of the variability of cloud reflected radiance fields

    Get PDF
A method to determine the radiative properties of complex cloud fields was developed. A Cloud field optical simulator (CFOS) was constructed to simulate the interaction of cloud fields with visible radiation. The CFOS was verified by comparing experimental results from it with calculations performed with a Monte Carlo radiative transfer model. A software library was developed to process, reduce, and display CFOS data. The CFSOS was utilized to study the reflected radiane patterns from simulated cloud fields

A mathematical morphology approach for a qualitative exploration of drought events in space and time

    Get PDF
Drought events occur worldwide and possibly incur severe consequences. Trying to understand and characterize drought events is of considerable importance in order to improve the preparedness for coping with future events. In this paper, we present a methodology that allows for the delineation of drought events by exploiting their spatiotemporal nature. To that end, we apply operators borrowed from mathematical morphology to represent drought events as connected components in space and time. As an illustration, we identify drought events on the basis of a 35-year data set of daily soil moisture values covering mainland Australia. We then extract characteristics reflecting the affected area, duration and intensity from the proposed representation of a drought event in order to illustrate the impact of tuning parameters in the methodology presented. Yet, this paper we refrain from comparing with other drought delineation methods

EVOLVING ENTITLEMENTS: INTERVENING TO PREVENT A COLLECTIVE HARM

When market transactions generate negative externalities, the injured party may initiate court action to prevent harm or to obtain compensation. The political response, in some cases, has been to broaden the set of agents who can intervene through the court, often by admitting entirely new categories of potential intervenors. We employ an experimental market setting to investigate the effect of an increase in the number of potential intervenors (introduced as admitting an additional class of persons having the necessary standing in law). The results suggest that there will be a substantial increase in the number of actual interventions. The increase means that social resources expended on interventions will increase and there may be a consequent reduction in trading activity in the affected markets.Public Economics,
