    Aggregations of a Sessile Ctenophore, Coeloplana sp., on Indo-West Pacific Gorgonians

    We document the benthic ctenophores Coeloplana sp. and Vallicula multiformis from Oman, extending their geographic range. A new Coeloplana species was found forming aggregations on gorgonians of two octocoral host genera, Melithaea and Euplexaura, representing associations previously unknown to occur in the Indo-West Pacific region. Our findings also illustrate the concurrent presence of the ectocommensal ophiuroid Ophiothela mirabilis, which adversely affects other Coeloplana species in the tropical West Atlantic, where it is considered invasive. This exploration contributes to our understanding of the biogeography, species distribution, and ectosymbiotic associations of these genera, setting the stage for a comprehensive species description and in-depth analysis of host relationships in future studies

    Magnesium(II)-ATP Complexes in 1-Ethyl-3-Methylimidazolium Acetate Solutions Characterized by 31Mg β-Radiation-Detected NMR Spectroscopy

    The complexation of MgII with adenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP) is omnipresent in biochemical energy conversion, but is difficult to interrogate directly. Here we use the spin-urn:x-wiley:14337851:media:anie202207137:anie202207137-math-0001 β-emitter 31Mg to study MgII-ATP complexation in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EMIM-Ac) solutions using β-radiation-detected nuclear magnetic resonance (β-NMR). We demonstrate that (nuclear) spin-polarized 31Mg, following ion-implantation from an accelerator beamline into EMIM-Ac, binds to ATP within its radioactive lifetime before depolarizing. The evolution of the spectra with solute concentration indicates that the implanted 31Mg initially bind to the solvent acetate anions, whereafter they undergo dynamic exchange and form either a mono- (31Mg-ATP) or di-nuclear (31MgMg-ATP) complex. The chemical shift of 31Mg-ATP is observed up-field of 31MgMg-ATP, in accord with quantum chemical calculations. These observations constitute a crucial advance towards using β-NMR to probe chemistry and biochemistry in solution

    Coming Together during COVID-19: A Mixed Methods Exploratory Study on Collective Efficacy in a State Developmental Disabilities Network

    Background: Collective efficacy (CE) is a group’s shared belief that through their united efforts they can overcome challenges to achieve common goals (Bandura, 1993; 1997). CE has been shown to be related to professional growth, stress reduction, and overall collaborative impact in studies of groups responding to ongoing challenges as well as unforeseen circumstances (i.e. teachers, first-responders, and community responses to natural disasters) (Benight, 2004; Donohoo, 2016; Prati et al., 2011). COVID-19 has forced organizations serving individuals with disabilities to come together to adapt and change the ways in which they serve the disability community. Objective: This study examines reported attributes of CE as experienced by Arizona Developmental Disability Network (ADDN) members and their partners. This study respectively examines CE prior to COVID-19, currently, and predicted likelihood of CE attributes continuing in the future. Method: This mixed-method study involves data collected through a questionnaire and qualitative data collected through interviews with ADDN members and their partners. Results: The questionnaire results describe and compare the attributes of CE using sub-domains of social cohesion and trust, group competence, and enabling structures in three-time frames: prior to COVID-19, currently, and prediction of six months from now. The interviews provide narrative description of specific ADDN activities, roles, and perceptions; thus, adding a valuable dimension to interpreting the results. Conclusion: ADDN members and their partners have persisted and quickly adapted to COVID-19. These connections made during this time are likely to remain and help better serve Arizona’s disability community

    Two pup vocalization types are genetically and functionally separable in deer mice

    Vocalization is a widespread vertebrate social behavior that is essential for fitness in the wild. While many vocal behaviors are highly conserved, heritable features of specific vocalization types can vary both within and between species, raising the questions of why and how some vocal behaviors evolve. Here, using new computational tools to automatically detect and cluster vocalizations into distinct acoustic categories, we compare pup isolation calls across neonatal development in eight taxa of deer mice (genusPeromyscus) and compare them to laboratory mice (C57Bl6/j strain) and free-living, wild house mice (Mus musculus musculus). Whereas bothPeromyscusandMuspups produce ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs),Peromyscuspups also produce a second call type with acoustic features, temporal rhythms, and developmental trajectories that are distinct from those of USVs. In deer mice, these tonal and low frequency “cries” are predominantly emitted in postnatal days one through nine, while USVs are primarily made after day nine. Using playback assays, we show that cries result in a more rapid approach byPeromyscusmothers than USVs, suggesting a role for cries in eliciting parental care early in neonatal development. Using genetic crosses between two sister species of deer mice exhibiting large, innate differences in the acoustic structure of cries and USVs, we find that variation in vocalization rate, duration, and pitch display different degrees of genetic dominance and that cry and USV features can be uncoupled in second-generation hybrids. Taken together, this work shows that vocal behavior can evolve quickly between closely related rodent species in which vocalization types, likely serving distinct functions in communication, are controlled by distinct genetic loci
