Cryogenic Insulation System
This invention relates to reusable, low density, high temperature cryogenic foam insulation systems and the process for their manufacture. A pacing technology for liquid hydrogen fueled, high speed aircraft is the development of a fully reusable, flight weight cryogenic insulation system for propellant tank structures. In the invention cryogenic foam insulation is adhesively bonded to the outer wall of the fuel tank structure. The cryogenic insulation consists of square sheets fabricated from an array of abutting square blocks. Each block consists of a sheet of glass cloth adhesively bonded between two layers of polymethacrylimide foam. Each block is wrapped in a vapor impermeable membrane, such as Kapton(R) aluminum Kapton(R), to provide a vapor barrier. Very beneficial results can be obtained by employing the present invention in conjunction with fibrous insulation and an outer aeroshell, a hot fuselage structure with an internal thermal protection system

Approximate Inference for Constructing Astronomical Catalogs from Images
We present a new, fully generative model for constructing astronomical
catalogs from optical telescope image sets. Each pixel intensity is treated as
a random variable with parameters that depend on the latent properties of stars
and galaxies. These latent properties are themselves modeled as random. We
compare two procedures for posterior inference. One procedure is based on
Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) while the other is based on variational
inference (VI). The MCMC procedure excels at quantifying uncertainty, while the
VI procedure is 1000 times faster. On a supercomputer, the VI procedure
efficiently uses 665,000 CPU cores to construct an astronomical catalog from 50
terabytes of images in 14.6 minutes, demonstrating the scaling characteristics
necessary to construct catalogs for upcoming astronomical surveys.Comment: accepted to the Annals of Applied Statistic

Evaluation and nonsurgical management of rotator cuff calcific tendinopathy.
Rotator cuff calcific tendinopathy is a common finding that accounts for about 7% of patients with shoulder pain. There are numerous theories on the pathogenesis of rotator cuff calcific tendinopathy. The diagnosis is confirmed with radiography, MRI or ultrasound. There are numerous conservative treatment options available and most patients can be managed successfully without surgical intervention. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and multiple modalities are often used to manage pain and inflammation; physical therapy can help improve scapular mechanics and decrease dynamic impingement; ultrasound-guided needle aspiration and lavage techniques can provide long-term improvement in pain and function in these patients

A Portfolio of marine science education and outreach projects
The work described herein entailed three separate but related
education/outreach activities aimed at distinct audiences. This portfolio required
acquisition of a range of skills in order to effectively convey information in a fashion accessible to each target audience. The first project consists of contributions to a
sample chapter of a book summarizing the present-day understanding of coastal
Oregon oceanography for the general public. The second project is the development
and teaching of two "suitcase" lessons in oceanography on icebergs and sea-ice aimed
at a third grade level. The third project entailed public relations in support of the
permitting process for oceanographic research in waters adjacent to northern Canada
and Greenland. A chronicle of activities was written with the intention of benefiting
other practitioners of science and native communities in the region. What follows is a
summary of each of these three projects
Genetic, enzymatic and metabolite profiling of the Lactobacillus casei group reveals strain biodiversity and potential applications for flavour diversification
Aims: The Lactobacillus casei group represents a widely explored group of lactic acid bacteria, characterized by a high level of biodiversity. In this study, the genetic and phenotypic diversity of a collection of more than 300 isolates of the Lact. casei group and their potential to produce volatile metabolites important for flavour development in dairy products, was examined. Methods and Results: Following confirmation of species by 16S rRNA PCR, the diversity of the isolates was determined by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. The activities of enzymes involved in the proteolytic cascade were assessed and significant differences among the strains were observed. Ten strains were chosen based on the results of their enzymes activities and they were analysed for their ability to produce volatiles in media with increased concentrations of a representative aromatic, branched chain and sulphur amino acid. Volatiles were assessed using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Strain-dependent differences in the range and type of volatiles produced were evident. Conclusions: Strains of the Lact. casei group are characterized by genetic and metabolic diversity which supports variability in volatile production. Significance and Impact of the Study: This study provides a screening approach for the knowledge-based selection of strains potentially enabling flavour diversification in fermented dairy products
