Acute toxicity of atrazine to Oreochromis niloticus fingerlings
Acute toxicity of atrazine to Oreochromis niloticus was undertaken to find the lethal concentration (LC) 50 of atrazine using fingerlings. Different concentrations were prepared in mg/L. There were six different concentrations with a control and each treatment was replicated three times. A total number of twenty-one aquaria were used. The highest concentration was 30mg/L. Ten test organisms were used in each aquarium. At 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours there were LC 50 of 15.6mg/L, 14mg/L, 11mg/L and 9.4, respectively. At 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours there were mean survivals of 49.0%, 34.3%, 28.6% and 28.1%, respectivel
An assessment of the problems of fisheries data collection in Nigeria
This paper reports on a survey, which studied the problems working against fisheries data collection in the country. The purpose of this was to quantify the capacity of the States to effectively collect data needed for planning and development of the fisheries sector and to assess the impact of this on the process of data collection and the quality of the data collected. Four organizational levels of data collection - Enumerator, L.G.A, zone & State - were recognized by the study, but their efficiency is weakened by inadequacies of manpower, budgets & logistics. The magnitudes of these problems vary among the States but their effects are adverse all over. The current efforts of the Federal Department of Fisheries and other stakeholders to strengthen fisheries data collection in the states should be intensified both in magnitude and frequency to be able to achieve adequate capacity for generating adequate data for planning and development of the fisheries sector

DEATH COMES AT NIGHT, BUT HEALING COMES IN THE MORNING
Adults who have experienced parent loss go through a very traumatic period in their life.Even as an adult, age does not determine the impact of this devastating loss. The purpose of thisstudy was to examine the behaviors, emotions, and reactions of adults (ages 18 and above) whohad lost a parent by listening to a range of media pieces. The many media pieces includeinterviews, long-form videos, and podcasts. These media pieces include adults who haveexperienced parent death, discussing their experiences, feelings at the time, and how they arecoping with the loss and going on. After analyzing the media pieces, I timemark what the adultssay, give my thoughts beneath the timemark, and add my own emotions and responses. I sharemy experience and some of the same sentiments with my mom’s passing. By analyzing the fivemedia pieces that were used, four important aspects of adult mourning were found: the adults'response to the loss of their parents, their needs and life after the parent passed away, copingstrategies and the variables influencing the grieving process, and relationships with context.Adults who experience the death of a parent are more resilient because they have a greater senseof purpose in life and a better awareness of themselves
Valitsuse sekkumise olulisus väiketaludes toiduga kindlustatuse parandamiseks: juhtumianalüüs Nigeeria Enugu osariigist
Master´s thesis
Agri-Food Business ManagementThe need for government to encourage small-scale farmers is important, and the Nigerian government has not paid much attention to the yearning of these farmers. For the government to reduce importation of foods to meet up the nutritional value of its populace, save foreign exchanges that could be channeled to other economic sector, and achieve food security, encouraging the small scale farmers must be one of their top priority.
This Master’s thesis aims to evaluate the important roles of government to small-scale farmers in improving the food security of Enugu State, Nigeria.
This research work employed a combined research method to get answers for objectives set for this study. Data was collected through an online google document link (53), 44 questionnaires were administered physically to farmers who don’t have email, and 3 phone call interviews and equally, time-series data from Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) spanning 2014 – 2019 was collected.
The study found out that many challenges face the small-scale farmers in the study area due to ineffective government roles in small-scale farmers' activities manifested as the use of poor and rudimentary storage facilities and many others. All these problems have led the country to be a major importer of food to meet the nutritional needs of its citizenry, which the value of food import-export ratio stood at 13% and 11% in 2016-2018 and 2017-2019 respectively.Vajadus väiketalunike tegevust edendada on oluline ja Nigeeria valitsus pole nendele põllumeestele piisavat tähelepanu pööranud. Et valitsus vähendaks toiduainete importi, samal ajal tagades toiduga kindlustatust, säästaks väliskaubanduskuludelt, mida saaks suunata teistesse majandussektoritesse, ja saavutaks toiduga kindlustatuse, peab väiketalunike tegevuse edendamine ja julgustamine olema nende peamine prioriteet.
Selle magistritöö eesmärk on hinnata valitsuse rolli väiketalunike tegevuse edendamisel ja Nigeeria Enugu osariigi toiduga kindlustatuse parandamisel.
Uurimistöös kasutati kombineeritud uurimismeetodit, et saada vastuseid uurimisküsimustele. Andmed koguti veebipõhise Google'i dokumendilingi kaudu (53), 44 küsimustikku viidi füüsiliselt põllumajandustootjatele, kellel pole e-posti, ja tehti 3 telefonikõne intervjuud.
Design and implementation of evolutionary computation algorithms for volunteer compute networks
Thesis: M. Eng., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, June 2014.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis. "May 23, 2014."Includes bibliographical references (page 37).We implemented a distributed evolutionary computation system titled EvoGPJ Star (EGS) and deployed the system onto Boinc, a volunteer computing network (VCN). Evolutionary computation is computationally expensive and VCN allows more cost-effective cluster computing since resources are donated. In addition, we believe that the design similarities between EGS and our chosen VCN (Boinc) would allow for easy integration of the two systems. EGS follows a centralized design pattern, with multiple engines communicating with a central coordinator and case server. The coordinator synchronizes up engines to run experiments and also stores and distributes individual solutions among engines. The engine-coordinator model creates a scalable (engines can be easily added) and robust (can continue to operate if nodes fail) system. For our experiment we chose rule-based classification. We saw the distributed EGS solutions (standard and Boinc) outperform the single-engine system. Deploying the system to Boinc revealed some design conflicts between Boinc and EGS experimentation. These conflicts stemmed from the asynchronous and asymmetric nature of VCNs.by Otitochi Mbagwu.M. Eng
Exploring Methods to Increase HIV Testing in Kentucky
This project was conducted to develop a policy proposal that would increase HIV testing after evaluating current Kentucky Law and Regulations, current health insurance laws, studies on acceptability of different HIV test, barriers to testing from both providers and patients/individuals, and factors associated with positive likelihood of HIV testing. Based on these findings a proposal was developed that would require changing Kentucky regulations on providers communicating test results to patients, change in what form HIV testing would be covered under certain insurances, develop incentives for patients to be tested and report their results to their provider (and hence increasing surveillance data), and selecting the most acceptable, convenient and affordable at-home/self-testing option to be covered. The proposal addresses the barriers of anonymity/privacy (to an extent), anxiety with waiting for results, ED missed opportunities for testing, counselling, venipuncture, and more. The proposal in its entirety is more of an expansion on what can be done about HIV testing rates more so than replacing what is in place
Motivations For Code-Switching Among Igboenglish Bilinguals: A Linguistic And Sociopsychological Survey
Code-switching and code-mixing are known to be universal phenomena among bilinguals. Not until recently, codeswitch ng/
mixing was seen as evidence of “internal mental confusion, the inability to separate two languages sufficiently to warrant the description of true bilingualism” (Lipski 1982:191). Studies have shown that code-switching is not a manifestation of mental confusion but a rule-governed behaviour among bilinguals which is motivated by various socio-psychological as well as linguistic factors. It has been observed that code-switching is more predominant among Igbo-English bilinguals compared to any other linguistic group in Nigeria. This paper seeks to explain why the Igbo people code-switch a lot by looking at the history of the Igbo language contact with English, the socio-psychological factors as well as the Linguistic factors that contributed to the predominance of code-switching among Igbo-English bilinguals
Staffing and Supervision as Predictors of Students’ Satisfaction with Library Services in Public Secondary Schools in Imo State.
This study investigated staffing and supervision as predictors of students’ satisfaction with library services in public secondary schools in Imo State.. The study was guided by 2 research questions and 2 hypotheses. The design of the study is a linear correlational design. The population of the study is 94,968. This is made up of 94693 Senior Secondary School Students and 275 librarians from 275 public secondary schools in Imo State. The sample size for this study is 660 librarians and SS2 students from 110 public secondary schools (110 librarians and SS2 550 students). The sampling techniques used in this study are multi-stage, purposive, simple random and disproportionate sampling techniques. Two types of research instruments were used to collect data for this study namely, School Library Management Scale (SLMS) for school librarians and Students’ Satisfaction with Library Services Scale (SSLSS) for Students. The data collected were analyzed using Pearson (r) for the research questions and t-test of significance of correlation for hypotheses. The major findings of the study showed that; there is a very low positive relationship between staffing and students’ satisfaction with library services. It was also established that there is a very low positive relationship between supervision and students’ satisfaction with library services, but the relationships are not significant. Based on these findings, the study recommended that; since the efficiency of any library and how it satisfies its users depends mainly on the competence of the human beings recruited to manage it, the researcher recommends the employment of qualified and professional librarians in our secondary school libraries; there should be good and proper supervision of both staff and users of library services to check the non-challant attitude of both for smooth running of the libraries
Prevalence of Gender Discrepancy in Internet Use in Nigeria: Implication for Women Empowerment
Very often some restrictions are imposed on who, what, why and howpeople engage in some professions, skills and activities thus, denying some individuals opportunities to be empowered towards self actualization and maximal contribution to the societal development. One important agent of empowerment is information, provided with dispatch through the Internet. In essence, the research sought to determine the prevalence of gender discrepancies in Internet use with a view to indicating its implication to women empowerment. In the survey, cluster and proportionate sampling techniques were employed to select five of the eighteen Internet centers in the three local government areas in Imo State, Nigeria. Three hundred self designed questionnaires were distributed to the sampled users. Obtained data were collated and analysed using frequency tables, percentages and graphs The result shows that female are almost at par with the male in the use of Internet though the female consist mainly of youths, students, low educational qualification (secondary education& diploma) except those with PhD. Female visit the Internet less frequently but stay longer hours browsing . Contrary to the former, opinion was that female should use the Internet less than male due to the inherent and expressed technological bias against them, traditionally impose domestic pressure and some cultural barriers. If such norm is accepted, the female will be denied the major source of real time information needed for empowermen
