    Rapid bioconcentration of steroids in the plasma of three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus exposed to waterborne testosterone and 17ÎČ-oestradiol

    The relationship over time between the concentrations of two steroids, singly and in combination, in a static exposure system and in the blood of three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus, held within the exposure system was investigated. Groups of three-spined stickleback were exposed (nominally) to either 1000 ng l1 17ÎČ-oestradiol (E2), testosterone (T) or E2 and T in combination at the same concentrations for 6 days. Both water and fish were sampled at intervals and steroid concentrations in both compartments were determined. The plasma steroid time profile revealed a rapid bioconcentration within the first 6 h of exposure. The plasma steroid levels attained at this time point (20–90 ng ml1) were up to 50-fold (E2) and 200-fold (T) greater than the actual levels of steroid measured in the exposure water, while levels in the blood of control fish did not exceed 4 ng ml1. The substantial elevation of plasma steroid levels relative to the concentrations of steroid to which the fish were exposed in the ambient water gives scope for delivery of the steroids to target endocrine tissues at levels far in excess of what might be predicted on the basis of passive branchial uptake alone. These results are discussed in relation to endocrine disruption, and in particular the occurrence of effects in fish exposed to levels of endocrine active substances that are seemingly physiologically irrelevant

    Are South African women willing and able to apply the new Food-Based Dietary Guidelines? Lessons for nutrition educators

    Background Consumer testing was a prime consideration in developing specific South African food-based dietary guidelines (FBDGs) which were nationally adopted in 2003. Objectives This study aimed to determine the consumer's ability to apply the FBDGs appropriately, in terms of identifying foods/drinks according to the FBDG food categories; perceived importance of and barriers to applying each FBDG; and planning a typical day's meals to reflect the FBDGs. Design A cross-sectional study of 333 women from different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Setting: KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Methods Data collection comprised focus-group discussions (n = 103) and structured individual interviews (n = 230). Results The identification of foods/drinks according to the FBDG food categories reflected a high level of comprehension by participants of these food categories. Participants from all study samples endorsed the importance of applying the FBDGs, predominantly for health reasons. Participants cited barriers to the application of the FBDGs as affordability, availability, household taste preferences, routine food-purchasing habits, time constraints, traditional/ habitual food-preparation methods, and persistent attitudes. Only three FBDGs were mentioned as difficult to apply, namely, “fruits/ vegetables”, “foods from animals” and “legumes”. Meal plans did reflect the FBDGs, illustrating the flexibility of their use across cultural and socio-economic differences. Conclusions Consumer testing of the FBDGs was mainly positive. The study has highlighted areas of confusion regarding certain concepts, terminology and misconceptions, and has identified barriers to application. These concerns can be addressed through the reformulation and retesting of certain dietary guidelines, and the provision of explanatory consumer information and health-worker training materials.     Relamination of mafic subducting crust throughout Earth’s history

    Earth has likely cooled by several hundred degrees over its history, which has probably affected subduction dynamics and associated magmatism. Today, the process of compositional buoyancy driven upwelling, and subsequent underplating, of subducted materials (commonly referred to as “relamination”) is thought to play a role in the formation of continental crust. Given that Archean continental crust formation is best explained by the involvement of mafic material, we investigate the feasibility of mafic crust relamination under a wide range of conditions applicable to modern and early Earth subduction zones, to assess if such a process might have been viable in an early Earth setting. Our numerical parametric study illustrates that the hotter, thicker-crust conditions of the early Earth favour the upward relamination of mafic subducting crust. The amount of relaminating subducting crust is observed to vary significantly, with subduction convergence rate having the strongest control on the volume of relaminated material. Indeed, removal of the entire mafic crust from the subducting slab is possible for slow subduction (∌2 cm/yr) under Archean conditions. We also observe great variability in the depth at which this separation occurs (80–120 km), with events corresponding to shallower detachment being more voluminous, and that relaminating material has to remain metastably buoyant until this separation depth, which is supported by geological, geophysical and geodynamical observations. Furthermore, this relamination behaviour is commonly episodic with a typical repeat time of approximately 10 Myrs, similar to timescales of episodicity observed in the Archean rock record. We demonstrate that this relamination process can result in the heating of considerable quantities of mafic material (to temperatures in excess of 900 °C), which is then emplaced below the over-riding lithosphere. As such, our results have implications for Archean subduction zone magmatism, for continental crust formation in the early Earth, and provide a novel explanation for the secular evolution of continental crust

    Insecure attachment is associated with the α-EEG anomaly during sleep

    Abstract Background The α-EEG anomaly during sleep, originally associated with chronic pain, is noted in several psychiatric and medical conditions and is also present in some normal subjects. The exact significance of the α-EEG anomaly is uncertain, but it has been suggested to be a nonspecific response to a variety of noxious stimuli. We propose that attachment insecurity, which is often associated with a state of hypervigilance during wakefulness, may be associated with the α-EEG anomaly during sleep. Methods Thirty one consecutive patients referred to a Sleep Disorders Clinic for clinical assessment of sleep complaints underwent standard polysomnographic recording. The degree of alpha activity in polysomnographs was scored visually according to standard criteria. Attachment insecurity was measured with the Experience in Close Relationships – Revised questionnaire. Results Attachment anxiety was significantly associated with the proportion of sleep in which α waves were present (df = 1, F = 5.01, p = 0.03). The relationship between the α-EEG anomaly and attachment anxiety was not explained by the distribution of sleep and mood diagnoses, medications, anxiety symptoms or depression symptoms. Conclusion Interpersonal style in close relationships may be related to sleep physiology. Further research to determine the nature of the relationship between attachment, sleep and other factors that are related to each of these, such as a history of personal adversity, is warranted

    The JCMT Gould Belt Survey: the effect of molecular contamination in SCUBA-2 observations of Orion A

    Thermal emission from cold dust grains in giant molecular clouds can be used to probe the physical properties, such as density, temperature and emissivity in star-forming regions. We present the SCUBA-2 shared-risk observations at 450 ÎŒ\mum and 850 ÎŒ\mum of the Orion A molecular cloud complex taken at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). Previous studies showed that molecular emission lines can contribute significantly to the measured fluxes in those continuum bands. We use the HARP 12^{12}CO J=3-2 integrated intensity map for Orion A in order to evaluate the molecular line contamination and its effects on the SCUBA-2 maps. With the corrected fluxes, we have obtained a new spectral index α\alpha map for the thermal emission of dust in the well-known integral-shaped filament. Furthermore, we compare a sample of 33 sources, selected over the Orion A molecular cloud complex for their high 12^{12}CO J=3-2 line contamination, to 27 previously identified clumps in OMC-4. This allows us to quantify the effect of line contamination on the ratio of 850 ÎŒ\mum to 450 ÎŒ\mum flux densities and how it modifies the deduced spectral index of emissivity ÎČ\beta for the dust grains. We also show that at least one Spitzer-identified protostellar core in OMC-5 has a 12^{12}CO J=3-2 contamination level of 16 %. Furthermore, we find the strongest contamination level (44 %) towards a young star with disk near OMC-2.     HCO+ detection of dust-depleted gas in the inner hole of the LkCa 15 pre-transitional disk

    LkCa 15 is an extensively studied star in the Taurus region, known for its pre-transitional disk with a large inner cavity in the dust continuum and normal gas accretion rate. The most popular hypothesis to explain the LkCa 15 data invokes one or more planets to carve out the inner cavity, while gas continues to flow across the gap from the outer disk onto the central star. We present spatially unresolved HCO+ J = 4 → 3 observations of the LkCa 15 disk from the James Clerk Maxwell telescope (JCMT) and model the data with the ProDiMo code. We find that: (1) HCO+ line-wings are clearly detected, certifying the presence of gas in the cavity within â‰Č50 au of the star. (2) Reproducing the observed line-wing flux requires both a significant suppression of cavity dust (by a factor ≄ 104 compared to the interstellar medium (ISM)) and a substantial increase in the gas scale-height within the cavity (H0/R0 ∌ 0.6). An ISM dust-to-gas ratio (d:g = 10-2) yields too little line-wing flux, regardless of the scale-height or cavity gas geometry, while a smaller scale-height also under-predicts the flux even with a reduced d:g. (3) The cavity gas mass is consistent with the surface density profile of the outer disk extended inwards to the sublimation radius (corresponding to mass Md ∌ 0.03 M⊙), and masses lower by a factor ≄10 appear to be ruled out.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Twisted topological structures related to M-branes

    Studying the M-branes leads us naturally to new structures that we call Membrane-, Membrane^c-, String^K(Z,3)- and Fivebrane^K(Z,4)-structures, which we show can also have twisted counterparts.     Optimized and accelerated 19F‐MRI of inhaled perfluoropropane to assess regional pulmonary ventilation

    Purpose To accelerate 19F‐MR imaging of inhaled perfluoropropane using compressed sensing methods, and to optimize critical scan acquisition parameters for assessment of lung ventilation properties. Methods Simulations were performed to determine optimal acquisition parameters for maximal perfluoropropane signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR) in human lungs for a spoiled gradient echo sequence. Optimized parameters were subsequently employed for 19F‐MRI of inhaled perfluoropropane in a cohort of 11 healthy participants using a 3.0 T scanner. The impact of 1.8×, 2.4×, and 3.0× undersampling ratios on 19F‐MRI acquisitions was evaluated, using both retrospective and prospective compressed sensing methods. Results 3D spoiled gradient echo 19F‐MR ventilation images were acquired at 1‐cm isotropic resolution within a single breath hold. Mean SNR was 11.7 ± 4.1 for scans acquired within a single breath hold (duration = 18 s). Acquisition of 19F‐MRI scans at shorter scan durations (4.5 s) was also demonstrated as feasible. Application of both retrospective (n = 8) and prospective (n = 3) compressed sensing methods demonstrated that 1.8× acceleration had negligible impact on qualitative image appearance, with no statistically significant change in measured lung ventilated volume. Acceleration factors of 2.4× and 3.0× resulted in increasing differences between fully sampled and undersampled datasets. Conclusion This study demonstrates methods for determining optimal acquisition parameters for 19F‐MRI of inhaled perfluoropropane and shows significant reduction in scan acquisition times (and thus participant breath hold duration) by use of compressed sensing
