The Carboxyl-Terminal Segment of Apolipoprotein A-V Undergoes a Lipid-Induced Conformational Change
Apolipoprotein (apo) A-V is a 343-residue, multidomain protein that plays an important role in regulation of plasma triglyceride homeostasis. Primary sequence analysis revealed a unique tetraproline sequence (Pro293-Pro296) near the carboxyl terminus of the protein. A peptide corresponding to the 48-residue segment beyond the tetraproline motif was generated from a recombinant apoA-V precursor wherein Pro295 was replaced by Met. Cyanogen bromide cleavage of the precursor protein, followed by negative affinity chromatography, yielded a purified peptide. Nondenaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis verified that apoA-V(296-343) solubilizes phospholipid vesicles, forming a relatively heterogeneous population of reconstituted high-density lipoprotein with Stokes’ diameters\u3e17 nm. At the same time, apoA-V(296-343) failed to bind a spherical lipoprotein substrate in vitro. Far-UV circular dichroism spectroscopy revealed the peptide is unstructured in buffer yet adopts significant R-helical secondary structure in the presence of the lipid mimetic solvent trifluoroethanol (TFE; 50% v/v). Heteronuclear multidemensional NMR spectroscopy experiments were conducted with uniformly 15N- and 15N/13C-labeled peptide in 50% TFE. Peptide backbone assignment and secondary structure prediction using TALOSþ reveal the peptide adopts R-helix secondary structure from residues 309 to 334. In TFE, apoA-V(296-343) adopts an extended amphipathic R-helix, consistent with a role in lipoprotein binding as a component of full-length apoA-V
Zinc Phosphide Residues in Gray-Tailed Voles (\u3ci\u3eMicrotus canicaudus\u3c/i\u3e) Fed Fixed Particles of a 2% Grain Bait
This study measured depelted-carcass residues of zinc phosphide (Zn3P2, CAS # 1314-84-7) in 8 (4 males and 4 females) gray-tailed voles (Microtus canicaudus). Six (3 males and 3 females) voles were confined individually in 1.89 dkl (5 gal) plastic pails that contained 5,2% Zn3P2 steamrolled- oat (SRO) groats; 2 voles (1 male and 1 female) served as analytical (unbaited) controls. Four test voles (3 males and 1female) died within 7.5 h after bait exposure; whereas, 2 test voles showed no signs of toxicosis and were euthanized 7.0 h after bait exposure. Whole carcasses were stored frozen and depelted carcasses were analyzed within 31 days for Zn3P2 residues using a acid-hydrolyzation, gas-chromatographic (GC) method. Analytical controls were euthanized, with carcasses stored and analyzed the same as test voles. A mean (± SD) 4.7 (±0.8) SRO groats were consumed by the test voles; this converted to a mean (±SD) intake of 2.15 (±0.38) mg Zn3P2 and dose of 73.25 mg/kg ( ± 22.95) Zn3P2. The mean (± SD) Zn3P2 residue in the 6 test vole carcasses was 0.42 mg (± 0.68); control carcasses contained \u3c0.009 mg Zn3P2- 3P2 in voles are variable, but typically \u3c 50% of ingested rodenticide and (2) risks of secondary poisoning posed by Zn3P2-baited voles to avian and mammalian predators/scavengers are low due to the relatively high toxic thresholds (\u3e 20 mg/kg) required to affect these species

An investigation of South Pole HOx chemistry: Comparison of model results with ISCAT observations
Unexpected high levels of OH and NO were recorded at the South Pole (SP) Atmospheric Research Observatory during the 1998-99 ISCAT field study. Model simulations suggest a major photochemical linkage between observed OH and NO. A detailed comparison of the observations with model predictions revealed good agreement for OH at NO levels between 120 and 380 pptv. However, the model tended to overestimate OH for NO levels < 120 pptv, while it underestimated OH at levels > 380 pptv. The reasons for these deviations appear not to involve NO directly but rather HOx radical scavenging for the low NO conditions and additional HOx sources for the high NO conditions. Because of the elevated levels of NO and highly activated HOx photochemistry, the SP was found to be a strong net source of surface ozone. It is quite likely that the strong oxidizing environment found at the South Pole extends over the entire polar plateau

We give a description of the level sets in the higher dimensional
multifractal formalism for infinite conformal graph directed Markov systems. If
these systems possess a certain degree of regularity this description is
complete in the sense that we identify all values with non-empty level sets and
determine their Hausdorff dimension. This result is also partially new for the

Highlights of OH, H2SO4, and methane sulfonic acid measurements made aboard the NASA P-3B during Transport and Chemical Evolution over the Pacific
Measurements of hydroxyl radical (OH), sulfuric acid (H2SO4), and methane sulfonic acid (MSA) were performed aboard the NASA P-3B using the selected ion chemical ionization mass spectrometry technique during the Transport and Chemical Evolution over the Pacific (TRACE-P) study. Photochemical box model calculations of OH concentrations yielded generally good agreement with an overall tendency to overestimate the measured OH by ∼20%. Further analysis reveals that this overestimation is present only at altitudes greater than ∼1.5 km, with the model underestimating OH measurements at lower altitudes. Boundary layer H2SO4 measurements, performed in a volcanic plume off the southern coast of Japan, revealed some of the largest marine boundary layer H2SO4 concentrations ever observed and were accompanied by new particle formation. Nighttime measurements of OH, H2SO4, and MSA in the remote pacific off Midway Island revealed significant boundary layer concentrations of H2SO4 and MSA, indicating evidence of nighttime boundary layer oxidation processes but in the absence of OH. Measurements of pernitric acid at the South Pole during ISCAT 2000
The first measurements of pernitric acid at the South Pole were performed during the second Investigation of Sulfur Chemistry in the Antarctic Troposphere (ISCAT 2000). Observed HO2NO2 concentrations averaged 25 pptv. Simple steady-state calculations constrained by measurements show that the lifetime of pernitric acid was largely controlled by dry deposition, with thermal decomposition becoming increasingly important at warmer temperatures. We determined that the pernitric acid equilibrium constant is less uncertain than indicated in the literature. One consequence of pernitric acid deposition to the snow surface is that it is an important sink for both NOx and HOx. Another is that the photochemistry of HO2NO2 in the Antarctic snowpack may be a NOx source in addition to nitrate photolysis. This might be one of the important differences in snow photochemistry between the South Pole and warmer polar sites
Investigations into free tropospheric new particle formation in the central Canadian arctic during the winter/spring transition as part of TOPSE
In this paper, we investigate the role of in situ new particle production in the central Canadian sub-Arctic and Arctic as part of the TOPSE experiment. Airborne measurements conducted primarily in the free troposphere were made from 50° to 90°W longitude and 60° to 85°N latitude during the period from February to May 2000. Data pertinent to this paper include 3–4 nm diameter (Dp) particles, ultrafine condensation nuclei (Dp \u3e 3 nm), fine particles (0.2 \u3c Dp \u3c 3 μm), and the possible nucleation precursor, sulfuric acid, and its precursor, sulfur dioxide. For data averaged over this period, most species showed little evidence for a latitudinal trend. Fine aerosol number concentrations, however, showed a slight increase with latitude. The evolution of various species concentrations over the period of the study show that fine particles also had a consistent temporal trend, increasing at all altitudes from February to May, whereas sulfur dioxide at the surface tended to peak in late March. Ultrafine condensation nuclei and 3–4 nm particles showed no temporal trends. Little evidence for in situ new particle production was observed during the study, except for one atypical event where SO2concentrations were 3.5 ppbv, 2 orders of magnitude higher than typical levels. This paper cannot address the question of whether the observed condensation nuclei were produced in situ by a low particle production rate or transported from lower latitudes
Slicing Sets and Measures, and the Dimension of Exceptional Parameters
We consider the problem of slicing a compact metric space \Omega with sets of
the form \pi_{\lambda}^{-1}\{t\}, where the mappings \pi_{\lambda} \colon
\Omega \to \R, \lambda \in \R, are \emph{generalized projections}, introduced
by Yuval Peres and Wilhelm Schlag in 2000. The basic question is: assuming that
\Omega has Hausdorff dimension strictly greater than one, what is the dimension
of the 'typical' slice \pi_{\lambda}^{-1}{t}, as the parameters \lambda and t
vary. In the special case of the mappings \pi_{\lambda} being orthogonal
projections restricted to a compact set \Omega \subset \R^{2}, the problem
dates back to a 1954 paper by Marstrand: he proved that for almost every
\lambda there exist positively many such that \dim
\pi_{\lambda}^{-1}{t} = \dim \Omega - 1. For generalized projections, the same
result was obtained 50 years later by J\"arvenp\"a\"a, J\"arvenp\"a\"a and
Niemel\"a. In this paper, we improve the previously existing estimates by
replacing the phrase 'almost all \lambda' with a sharp bound for the dimension
