Near-optimal stochastic MIMO signal detection with a mixture of t-distribution prior
Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems will play a crucial role in
future wireless communication, but improving their signal detection performance
to increase transmission efficiency remains a challenge. To address this issue,
we propose extending the discrete signal detection problem in MIMO systems to a
continuous one and applying the Hamiltonian Monte Carlo method, an efficient
Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm. In our previous studies, we have used a
mixture of normal distributions for the prior distribution. In this study, we
propose using a mixture of t-distributions, which further improves detection
performance. Based on our theoretical analysis and computer simulations, the
proposed method can achieve near-optimal signal detection with polynomial
computational complexity. This high-performance and practical MIMO signal
detection could contribute to the development of the 6th-generation mobile

Development of a separable search-and-rescue robot composed of a mobile robot and a snake robot
In this study, we propose a new robot system consisting of a mobile robot and a snake robot. The system works not only as a mobile manipulator but also as a multi-agent system by using the snake robot's ability to separate from the mobile robot. Initially, the snake robot is mounted on the mobile robot in the carrying mode. When an operator uses the snake robot as a manipulator, the robot changes to the manipulator mode. The operator can detach the snake robot from the mobile robot and command the snake robot to conduct lateral rolling motions. Age, gender, will, and use of home-visit nursing care are critical factors in home care for malignant diseases; a retrospective study involving 346 patients in Japan
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We aimed to clarify the factors affecting outcomes of home care for patients with malignant diseases.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Of 607 patients who were treated in 10 clinics specialized in home care between January and December 2007 at Chiba, Fukuoka, Iwate, Kagoshima, Tochigi and Tokyo prefectures across Japan, 346 (57%; 145 men and 201 women) had malignant diseases. We collected information on medical and social backgrounds, details of home care, and its outcomes based on their medical records.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Median age of the patients was 77 years (range, 11-102), and 335 patients were economically self-sufficient. Their general condition was poor; advanced cancer (n = 308), performance status of 3-4 (n = 261), and dementia (n = 121). At the beginning of home care, 143 patients and 174 family members expressed their wish to die at home. All the patients received supportive treatments including fluid replacement and oxygenation. Median duration of home care was 47 days (range, 0-2,712). 224 patients died at home. For the remaining 122, home care was terminated due to complications (n = 109), change of attending physicians (n = 8), and others (n = 5). The factors which inhibited the continuity of home care were the non-use of home-visit nursing care (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.78, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.05-3.00, <it>p </it>= 0.03), the fact that the patients themselves do not wish to die at home (HR = 1.83, CI: 1.09-3.07, <it>p </it>= 0.02), women (HR = 1.81, CI: 1.11-2.94, <it>p </it>= 0.02), and age (HR = 0.98, CI: 0.97-1.00, <it>p </it>= 0.02).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Continuation of home care is influenced by patients' age, gender, will, and use of home-visit nursing.</p
Second nationwide surveillance of bacterial pathogens in patients with acute uncomplicated cystitis conducted by Japanese Surveillance Committee from 2015 to 2016: antimicrobial susceptibility of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus saprophyticus
The Japanese Surveillance Committee conducted a second nationwide surveillance of antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of uropathogens responsible for acute uncomplicated cystitis (AUC) in premenopausal patients aged 16–40 years old at 31 hospitals throughout Japan from March 2015 to February 2016. In this study, the susceptibility of causative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus saprophyticus) for various antimicrobial agents was investigated by isolation and culturing of organisms obtained from urine samples. In total, 324 strains were isolated from 361 patients, including E. coli (n = 220, 67.9%), S. saprophyticus (n = 36, 11.1%), and K. pneumoniae (n = 7, 2.2%). The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 20 antibacterial agents for these strains were determined according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) manual. At least 93% of the E. coli isolates showed susceptibility to fluoroquinolones and cephalosporins, whereas 100% of the S. saprophyticus isolates showed susceptibility to fluoroquinolones and aminoglycosides. The proportions of fluoroquinolone-resistant and extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli strains were 6.4% (13/220) and 4.1% (9/220), respectively. The antimicrobial susceptibility of K. pneumoniae was retained during the surveillance period, while no multidrug-resistant strains were identified.
In summary, antimicrobial susceptibility results of our second nationwide surveillance did not differ significantly from those of the first surveillance. Especially the numbers of fluoroquinolone-resistant and ESBL-producing E. coli strains were not increased in premenopausal patients with AUC in Japan
Rhetoric of Experimental Reports : Psychical Research and the“ Rhetoric of Trial” in the Late Nineteenth Century
In this paper, I examine the transformation of rhetorical strategies in experimental reports in the late nineteenth century. Steven Shapin and Simon Schaffer’s canonical work Leviathan and the Air-Pump (1985) has demonstrated that early experimental scientists such as Robert Boyle had to adopt the “rhetoric of trial,” a lost literary technique with which experimental reports were compared to testimony in court, due to the lower status assigned to observation and experiments. While subsequent researchers have analyzed how this sort of rhetoric was used in the seventeenth century, the era of “scientific revolution,” few have focused on the rise and fall of the“ rhetoric of trial” afterward. In response, I try to show when and how this rhetoric disappeared. For this purpose, I focus on a branch of experimental science called psychical research. Though psychical research is now seen to be a typical example of pseudoscience, it attracted many famous scientists in the fin de siècle, inspiring huge debates on the reliability of experimental reports. Psychical researchers frequently used the “rhetoric of trial” to justify their reports. However, this rhetoric began to lose its persuasiveness with the rise of experimental psychology and statistical testing. From this episode, I reconsider the origin of current norms in scientific experiments such as reproducibility.一般論

Feasibility and safety study of wearable cyborg Hybrid Assistive Limb for pediatric patients with cerebral palsy and spinal cord disorders
IntroductionThe wearable cyborg Hybrid Assistive Limb (HAL) is the world’s first cyborg-type wearable robotic device, and it assists the user’s voluntary movements and facilitates muscle activities. However, since the minimum height required for using the HAL is 150 cm, a smaller HAL (2S size) has been newly developed for pediatric use. This study aimed to (1) examine the feasibility and safety of a protocol for treatments with HAL (2S size) in pediatric patients and (2) explore the optimal method for assessing the efficacy of HAL.MethodsThis clinical study included seven pediatric patients with postural and motor function disorders, who received 8–12 sessions of smaller HAL (2S size) treatment. The primary outcome was the Gross Motor Function Measure-88 (GMFM-88). The secondary outcomes were GMFM-66, 10-m walk test, 2- and 6-min walking distances, Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), a post-treatment questionnaire, adverse events, and device failures. Statistical analyses were performed using the paired samples t-test or Wilcoxon signed-rank test.ResultsAll participants completed the study protocol with no serious adverse events. GMFM-88 improved from 65.51 ± 21.97 to 66.72 ± 22.28 (p = 0.07). The improvements in the secondary outcomes were as follows: GMFM-66, 53.63 ± 11.94 to 54.96 ± 12.31, p = 0.04; step length, 0.32 ± 0.16 to 0.34 ± 0.16, p = 0.25; 2-MWD, 59.1 ± 57.0 to 62.8 ± 63.3, p = 0.54; COPM performance score, 3.7 ± 2.0 to 5.3 ± 1.9, p = 0.06; COPM satisfaction score, 3.3 ± 2.1 to 5.1 ± 2.1, p = 0.04.DiscussionIn this exploratory study, we applied a new size of wearable cyborg HAL (2S size), to children with central nervous system disorders. We evaluated its safety, feasibility, and identified an optimal assessment method for multiple treatments. All participants completed the protocol with no serious adverse events. This study suggested that the GMFM would be an optimal assessment tool for validation trials of HAL (2S size) treatment in pediatric patients with posture and motor function disorders
Inhibition of 7-dehydrocholesterol reductase prevents hepatic ferroptosis under an active state of sterol synthesis
Abstract Recent evidence indicates ferroptosis is implicated in the pathophysiology of various liver diseases; however, the organ-specific regulation mechanism is poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate 7-dehydrocholesterol reductase (DHCR7), the terminal enzyme of cholesterol biosynthesis, as a regulator of ferroptosis in hepatocytes. Genetic and pharmacological inhibition (with AY9944) of DHCR7 suppress ferroptosis in human hepatocellular carcinoma Huh-7 cells. DHCR7 inhibition increases its substrate, 7-dehydrocholesterol (7-DHC). Furthermore, exogenous 7-DHC supplementation using hydroxypropyl β-cyclodextrin suppresses ferroptosis. A 7-DHC-derived oxysterol metabolite, 3β,5α-dihydroxycholest-7-en-6-one (DHCEO), is increased by the ferroptosis-inducer RSL-3 in DHCR7-deficient cells, suggesting that the ferroptosis-suppressive effect of DHCR7 inhibition is associated with the oxidation of 7-DHC. Electron spin resonance analysis reveals that 7-DHC functions as a radical trapping agent, thus protecting cells from ferroptosis. We further show that AY9944 inhibits hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury, and genetic ablation of Dhcr7 prevents acetaminophen-induced acute liver failure in mice. These findings provide new insights into the regulatory mechanism of liver ferroptosis and suggest a potential therapeutic option for ferroptosis-related liver diseases
