    Comparison of survey methods for estimating abundance of harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) in glacial fjords

    The importance of glacial ice habitats to harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) in Alaska has become increasingly apparent. However, enumerating harbor seals hauled out on ice in glacial fjords has been difficult. At Johns Hopkins Inlet in Glacier Bay, Alaska, we compared a shore-based counting method to a large-format aerial photography method to estimate seal abundance. During each aerial survey, shore-based observers simultaneously counted seals from an observation post. Both survey methods incurred errors in double-counting and missing seals, especially when ice movements caused seals to drift between survey zones. Advantages of shore-based counts included the ability to obtain multiple counts for relatively little cost, distinguish pups from adults, and to distinguish mobile seals from shadows or glacial debris of similar size. Aerial photography provided a permanent record of each survey, allowing both a reconciliation of counts in overlapping zones and the documentation of the spatial distribution of seals and ice within the fjord

    Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a heritable, early-onset neuropsychiatric disorder that typically begins in early childhood. Identifying rare genetic variants that make a significant contribution to risk in affected families may provide important insights into the molecular aetiology of this complex and heterogeneous syndrome. Here we present a whole-genome sequencing (WGS) analysis from the 11-generation pedigree (>500 individuals) of a densely affected Costa Rican family which shares ancestry from six founder pairs. By conducting an identity-by-descent (IBD) analysis using WGS data from 19 individuals from the extended pedigree we have identified putative risk haplotypes that were not seen in controls, and can be linked with four of the six founder pairs. Rare coding and non-coding variants present on the haplotypes and only seen in haplotype carriers show an enrichment in pathways such as regulation of locomotion and signal transduction, suggesting common mechanisms by which the haplotype-specific variants may be contributing to TS-risk in this pedigree. In particular we have identified a rare deleterious missense variation in RAPGEF1 on a chromosome 9 haplotype and two ultra-rare deleterious intronic variants in ERBB4 and IKZF2 on the same chromosome 2 haplotype. All three genes play a role in neurodevelopment. This study, using WGS data in a pedigree-based approach, shows the importance of investigating both coding and non-coding variants to identify genes that may contribute to disease risk. Together, the genes and variants identified on the IBD haplotypes represent biologically relevant targets for investigation in other pedigree and population-based TS data

    Humpback whales interfering when mammal-eating killer whales attack other species: mobbing behavior and interspecific altruism?

    Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) are known to interfere with attacking killer whales (Orcinus orca). To investigate why, we reviewed accounts of 115 interactions between them. Humpbacks initiated the majority of interactions (57% vs. 43%; n=72), although the killer whales were almost exclusively mammal-eating forms (MEKWs, 95%) vs. fish-eaters (5%; n=108). When MEKWs approached humpbacks (n=27), they attacked 85% of the time and targeted only calves. When humpbacks approached killer whales (n=41), 93% were MEKWs, and >87% of them were attacking or feeding on prey at the time. When humpbacks interacted with attacking MEKWs, 11% of the prey were humpbacks and 89% comprised 10 other species, including 3 cetaceans, 6 pinnipeds, and 1 teleost fish. Approaching humpbacks often harassed attacking MEKWs (>55% of 56 interactions), regardless of the prey species, which we argue was mobbing behavior. Humpback mobbing sometimes allowed MEKW prey, including nonhumpbacks, to escape. We suggest that humpbacks initially responded to vocalizations of attacking MEKWs without knowing the prey species targeted. Although reciprocity or kin selection might explain communal defense of conspecific calves, there was no apparent benefit to humpbacks continuing to interfere when other species were being attacked. Interspecific altruism, even if unintentional, could not be ruled out

    Path to Success: Development of the Pharmacist Through the Continuum of Pharmacy School and Beyond

    Objective: To explore the processes and opportunities provided in the co-curriculum of the Wegmans School of Pharmacy (WSoP) that contribute to the development of successful pharmacy graduates. Methods: Pharmacy career preparation begins at orientation with workshops on emotional intelligence, leadership, and the APhA Career Pathway Evaluation Program. During the P1 through P4 years, the optional Student Development Workshop Series (SDW) offers seminars for students on a variety of topics including time management, exam taking strategies/anxiety management, learning styles, personal “brand” creation, CV/portfolio development, and interview soft skills. All students may participate in the annual WSoP Career Day, which offers networking and career opportunities, including post-graduate training options. During the P4 year, there is opportunity for a structured Residency/Fellowship Preparation Program (RPP). Additionally, local pharmacy residents/fellows participate in a Residency Teaching/Learning Curriculum Program (TLC) to develop academic teaching and precepting skills. Results: The SDW program has been successful and well attended with greater than 90% of students finding the topics relevant to their post-graduate success. After the RPP, ASHP residency match results in the 2016 class yielded an improvement from previous years, with 76 % of applied students and 94% of ranked students matching programs in Phase 1. Of the TLC participants, 90% documented an improvement in multiple types of teaching skills. Implications: Based on data and student/faculty input, career development is reassessed and improved continuously at WSoP. In the near future, a method for tracking graduates will be designed to further monitor the impact of programs on student success
