Flat Dielectric Grating Reflectors with High Focusing Power
Sub-wavelength dielectric gratings (SWG) have emerged recently as a promising
alternative to distributed-Bragg-reflection (DBR) dielectric stacks for
broadband, high-reflectivity filtering applications. A SWG structure composed
of a single dielectric layer with the appropriate patterning can sometimes
perform as well as thirty or forty dielectric DBR layers, while providing new
functionalities such as polarization control and near-field amplification. In
this paper, we introduce a remarkable property of grating mirrors that cannot
be realized by their DBR counterpart: we show that a non-periodic patterning of
the grating surface can give full control over the phase front of reflected
light while maintaining a high reflectivity. This new feature of dielectric
gratings could have a substantial impact on a number of applications that
depend on low-cost, compact optical components, from laser cavities to CD/DVD
read/write heads.Comment: submitted to Nature Photonic
Constructing and Visualizing High-Quality Classifier Decision Boundary Maps dagger
Visualizing decision boundaries of machine learning classifiers can help in classifier design, testing and fine-tuning. Decision maps are visualization techniques that overcome the key sparsity-related limitation of scatterplots for this task. To increase the trustworthiness of decision map use, we perform an extensive evaluation considering the dimensionality-reduction (DR) projection techniques underlying decision map construction. We extend the visual accuracy of decision maps by proposing additional techniques to suppress errors caused by projection distortions. Additionally, we propose ways to estimate and visually encode the distance-to-decision-boundary in decision maps, thereby enriching the conveyed information. We demonstrate our improvements and the insights that decision maps convey on several real-world datasets
An improvement of photocatalytic activity of TiO2 Degussa P25 powder
The photocatalytic activities of Degussa P25 powders annealed at various temperatures in vacuum and air were studied together with investigations of their compositions by XPS, of their crystal structures by XRD and of their specific surface areas by BET. It is shown that the photocatalytic activity of P25 powders was remarkably enhanced after vacuum annealing; the kinetic coefficient can be raised by 75% during annealing at 400 degrees C. It is obvious that this enhancement is not related to the adhesion ability of the P25 powders. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Study of Metal/Polymer Interface of Parts Produced by a Hybrid Additive Manufacturing Approach
Acknowledgments
This research work was supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and Centro2020 through the Project reference: UID/Multi/04044/2013, PAMI - ROTEIRO/0328/2013 (Nº 022158) and Portuguese National Innovation Agency (ANI) through the Project reference POCI-01-0247-FEDER-017963, NEXT.parts – Next Generation of Advanced Hybrid Parts (co-promotion nº 17963).The additive manufacturing of multimaterial parts, e.g. metal/plastic, with functional
gradients represents for current market demands a great potential of applications [1]. Metal Polymer parts combine the good mechanical properties of the metals with the low weight characteristics, good impact strength, good vibration and sound absorption of the polymers. Nevertheless, the coupling between metal and polymers is a great challenge since the processing factors for each one of them are very different. In addition, a system that makes the hybrid processing - metal/polymer - using
only one operation is unknown [2, 3]. To overcome this drawback, a hybrid additive manufacturing system based on the additive technologies of SLM and SL was recently developed by the authors. The SLM and SL techniques joined enabling the production of a photopolymerization of the polymer in the voids of a 3D metal mesh previously produced by SLM [4]. The purpose of this work is the study on the metal/polymer interface of hybrid parts manufactured from the hybrid additive manufacturing system [5]. For this, a core of tool steel (H13) and two different types of photopolymers:
one elastomeric (BR3D-DL-Flex) and another one rigid (BR3D-DL-Hard) are considered. A set of six samples for each one of metal core/polymer combination was manufactured and submitted to tensile tests.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Fair and optimistic quantum contract signing
We present a fair and optimistic quantum contract signing protocol between
two clients that requires no communication with the third trusted party during
the exchange phase. We discuss its fairness and show that it is possible to
design such a protocol for which the probability of a dishonest client to cheat
becomes negligible, and scales as N^{-1/2}, where N is the number of messages
exchanged between the clients. Our protocol is not based on the exchange of
signed messages: its fairness is based on the laws of quantum mechanics. Thus,
it is abuse-free, and the clients do not have to generate new keys for each
message during the Exchange phase. We discuss a real-life scenario when the
measurement errors and qubit state corruption due to noisy channels occur and
argue that for real, good enough measurement apparatus and transmission
channels, our protocol would still be fair. Our protocol could be implemented
by today's technology, as it requires in essence the same type of apparatus as
the one needed for BB84 cryptographic protocol. Finally, we briefly discuss two
alternative versions of the protocol, one that uses only two states (based on
B92 protocol) and the other that uses entangled pairs, and show that it is
possible to generalize our protocol to an arbitrary number of clients.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure
The FuGas 2.5 updated for the effects of surface turbulence on the transfer velocity of gases at the atmosphere–ocean interface
Accurately estimating air–water gas exchanges requires considering other factors besides
wind speed. These are particularly useful for coastal ocean applications, where the sea-state varies
at fine spatial and temporal resolutions. We upgrade FuGas 2.5 with improved formulations of the
gas transfer velocity parametrized based on friction velocity, kinetic energy dissipation, roughness
length, air-flow conditions, drift current and wave field. We then test the algorithm with field survey
data collected in the Baltic Sea during spring–summer of 2014 and 2015. Collapsing turbulence
was observed when gravity waves were the roughness elements on the sea-surface, travelling at a
speed identical to the wind. In such cases, the turbulence driven transfer velocities (from surface
renewal and micro-scale wave breaking) could be reduced from 20 cm h1 to 5 cm h1. However,
when peak gravity waves were too flat, they were presumably replaced by capillary-gravity waves
as roughness elements. Then, a substantial increase in the turbulence and roughness length was
observed, despite the low and moderate winds, leading to transfer velocities up to twice as large as
those predicted by empirical u10-based formulations.FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC) through project LARSyS: FCT Pluriannual funding 2020-2023

Witnessing causal nonseparability
Our common understanding of the physical world deeply relies on the notion
that events are ordered with respect to some time parameter, with past events
serving as causes for future ones. Nonetheless, it was recently found that it
is possible to formulate quantum mechanics without any reference to a global
time or causal structure. The resulting framework includes new kinds of quantum
resources that allow performing tasks - in particular, the violation of causal
inequalities - which are impossible for events ordered according to a global
causal order. However, no physical implementation of such resources is known.
Here we show that a recently demonstrated resource for quantum computation -
the quantum switch - is a genuine example of "indefinite causal order". We do
this by introducing a new tool - the causal witness - which can detect the
causal nonseparability of any quantum resource that is incompatible with a
definite causal order. We show however that the quantum switch does not violate
any causal nequality.Comment: 15 + 12 pages, 5 figures. Published versio
