Help Yourself: The Mechanisms Through Which a Self-Leadership Intervention Influences Strain
This research reports on two field studies which demonstrate that self-leadership training decreases strain via increases in self-efficacy and positive affect. The first, an experimental study, found that strain was reduced in the randomly assigned training group, but not in the control group. The second was a longitudinal study and supported the hypotheses that self-efficacy and positive affect mediated the effect of self-leadership training on strain. Our findings extend both self-leadership and stress management literatures by providing a theoretical framework within which the effects of self-leadership on strain can be understood. Practically speaking, our findings suggest that self-leadership training offers an individual-level preventive approach to stress management
The role of the exit in the initial screening of investment opportunities: The case of business angel syndicate gatekeepers
The exit process has been largely ignored in business angel research.. The practitioner community identifies the difficulty in achieving exits as the most pressing problem for investors. This has been attributed to the failure of investors to adopt an exit-centric approach to investing. The validity of this claim is examined via a study of the investment approach of 21 ‘gatekeepers’ (managers) of angel groups in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Most gatekeepers say that they do consider the exit when they invest. However, this is contradicted by a verbal protocol analysis which indicates that the exit is not a significant consideration in their initial screening process. The small number of exits achieved by the groups is consistent with the general lack of an exit-centric approach to investing. Only three groups exhibit evidence of a strong exit-centric approach to investing. The lack of exits may have a negative impact on the level of future angel investment activity
Why business angels reject investment opportunities: Is it personal?
A major focus of research on business angels has examined their decision-making processes and investment criteria. As business angels reject most of the opportunities that they receive, this article explores the reasons informing such decisions. In view of angel heterogeneity, investment opportunities might be expected to be rejected for differing reasons. Two sources of data are used to examine this issue. Face-to-face interviews with 30 business angels in Scotland and Northern Ireland provided information on typical ‘deal killers’. This was complemented by an Internet survey of United Kingdom that attracted responses from 238 UK business angels. The findings confirm that the main reason for rejection relates to the entrepreneur/management team. However, angel characteristics do not explain the number of reasons given for opportunity rejection nor do they predict the reasons for rejecting investment opportunities. This could be related to the increasing trend for business angels to join organised groups which, in turn, leads to the development of a shared repertoire of investment approaches. We suggest the concept of ‘communities-of-practice’ as an explanation for this finding
Performance Comparison Between FEDERICA Hand and LARM Hand

University of Cassino. FEDERICA Hand and LARM Hand
are described in terms of design and operational features.
In particular, careful attention is paid to the differences
between the above-mentioned hands in terms of transmission
systems. FEDERICA Hand uses tendons and pulleys
to drive phalanxes, while LARM Hand uses cross four-bar
linkages. Results of experimental tests are reported to show
how key design issues affect each robotic hand’s performance
A manifesto for researching entrepreneurial ecosystems
Entrepreneurial ecosystems are the focus of government economic policies around the world for their potential to generate entrepreneur-led economic development. The paper identifies key research questions and challenges to building effective public policy: (i) the limitations of existing data sources, (ii) the need to balance findings from quantitative and qualitative studies, (iii) the danger that entrepreneurial ecosystems will be just a policy fad, (iv) the narrow focus of policy and research on high tech firms and scale-ups, and (v) the need to balance research approaches between simplified models and a complex systems approach. There is a need for a better understanding of the diversity of policy contexts (level of government, country context) and model of ecosystem governance. A more granulated understanding of ecosystem thinking is required, with greater consideration of the diversity of actors and the institutional context, with more attention given to the heterogeneous nature of places and complex interactions between actors and networks. Looking to the future, the potential of new data sources and methodologies is identified. Future research should give greater consideration to the institutional context to understand how policy can better support entrepreneurial activity and the extent to which specific policies can be replicated elsewhere
Multidetector CT Improving Surgical Outcomes in Breast Cancer (MISO BC)
Introduction: This multicentre randomised controlled trial investigated whether a computed tomography (CT) scan of the axilla could more accurately assess whether the axillary lymph nodes were involved with malignancy in patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer and therefore influence surgical decision-making with regard to axillary surgery. Methods: Patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer (via screening and symptomatic routes) at two NHS Trusts in the North East of England were recruited and randomised in equal numbers. Both groups received routine diagnostic and surgical care (usual care). In addition, one group received a CT scan of their axilla on the same side as the breast cancer. Results: The study recruited 297 patients, of whom 291 contributed to findings. CT scan-guided care did not result in a change in the need for a second operation, with about 20% of both groups needing further surgery. Patients within the two groups were similar before treatment, had similar types and grade of cancer, experienced similar pattern complications and reported similar experiences of care. Conclusion: New diagnostic imaging technologies regularly enter NHS centres of excellence as research tools. It is important these are evaluated rigorously before becoming routine care. In patients newly diagnosed with breast cancer, CT-augmented diagnosis of cancer in the axilla was not found to improve surgical outcomes or patient experience
Yield and Viability of Human Limbal Stem Cells From Fresh and Stored Tissue
Purpose: We compared cell number, putative stem cell markers, and clonogenic ability in fresh uncultured human limbal epithelial cells to that obtained from stored organ-cultured tissue. Methods: Cell suspensions were formed from fresh and organ culture–stored human limbal epithelium. Expression of putative stem cell markers ΔNp63 and TrkA was performed using immunofluorescent staining before culture. Colony-forming efficiency (CFE) assays were performed at first passage. The effects of tissue storage, age, and postmortem/culture times were analyzed in a general linear model. Results: Limbal tissue from 94 donors (34 fresh and 60 stored) was compared. Three times more cells were obtained per eye from fresh (35.34 × 104; SD, 17.39) than stored (11.24 × 104; SD, 11.57; P < 0.01) tissue. A higher proportion of cells from fresh tissue were viable (91.9%; SD, 5.7 vs. 85%; SD, 10.8) P < 0.01. Higher total cell expression of ΔNp63 (20.19 × 104; SD, 15.5 vs. 3.28 104; SD, 4.33) and TrkA (59.24 × 104; SD, 13.21 vs. 7.65 × 104; SD, 1.05) was observed in fresh than stored tissue (P < 0.01). Colony-forming efficiency was higher for fresh (1.42; SD, 0.12) than stored (0.43; SD, 0.15; P < 0.01) cells. For stored tissue only, there was a significant inverse relationship between donor age and total number of cells isolated (R2 = 0.27, P < 0.001). Conclusions: Storage of corneoscleral discs in organ culture medium leads to significant reduction in limbal epithelial cell number, expression of ΔNp63 and TrkA, and viability compared to fresh tissue. There is a smaller basal stem cell population in stored compared to fresh tissue
Requirement of JNK1 for endothelial cell injury in atherogenesis
AbstractObjectiveThe c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) family regulates fundamental physiological processes including apoptosis and metabolism. Although JNK2 is known to promote foam cell formation during atherosclerosis, the potential role of JNK1 is uncertain. We examined the potential influence of JNK1 and its negative regulator, MAP kinase phosphatase-1 (MKP-1), on endothelial cell (EC) injury and early lesion formation using hypercholesterolemic LDLR−/− mice.Methods and resultsTo assess the function of JNK1 in early atherogenesis, we measured EC apoptosis and lesion formation in LDLR−/− or LDLR−/−/JNK1−/− mice exposed to a high fat diet for 6 weeks. En face staining using antibodies that recognise active, cleaved caspase-3 (apoptosis) or using Sudan IV (lipid deposition) revealed that genetic deletion of JNK1 reduced EC apoptosis and lesion formation in hypercholesterolemic mice. By contrast, although EC apoptosis was enhanced in LDLR−/−/MKP-1−/− mice compared to LDLR−/− mice, lesion formation was unaltered.ConclusionWe conclude that JNK1 is required for EC apoptosis and lipid deposition during early atherogenesis. Thus pharmacological inhibitors of JNK may reduce atherosclerosis by preventing EC injury as well as by influencing foam cell formation
