    Computability of simple games: A characterization and application to the core

    It was shown earlier that the class of algorithmically computable simple games (i) includes the class of games that have finite carriers and (ii) is included in the class of games that have finite winning coalitions. This paper characterizes computable games, strengthens the earlier result that computable games violate anonymity, and gives examples showing that the above inclusions are strict. It also extends Nakamura’s theorem about the nonemptyness of the core and shows that computable simple games have a finite Nakamura number, implying that the number of alternatives that the players can deal with rationally is restricted

Further classify them into sixty-four classes in terms of finiteness (existence of a finite carrier) and algorithmic computability. For each such class, we either show that it is empty or give an example of a game belonging to it. We observe that if a type contains an infinite game, then it contains both computable ones and noncomputable ones. This strongly suggests that computability is logically, as well as conceptually, unrelated to the conventional axioms.Comment: 25 page

    Concise Synthesis of Isocoumarins through Rh-Catalyzed Direct Vinylene Annulation: Scope and Mechanistic Insight

    Transition-metal-catalyzed activation of inert C–H bonds and subsequent C–C bond formation have emerged as pow-erful synthetic tools for the synthesis of elaborate cyclic molecules. In this report, we introduce an efficient synthetic method of 3,4-unsubstituted isocoumarins adopting an electron deficient CpERh complex as the catalyst. The use of vinylene carbonate as a vinylene transfer reagent enables the direct construction of isocoumarins from readily available benzoic acids, without any external oxidants as well as bases.     Preference aggregation theory without acyclicity: The core without majority dissatisfaction

    Acyclicity of individual preferences is a minimal assumption in social choice theory. We replace that assumption by the direct assumption that preferences have maximal elements on a fixed agenda. We show that the core of a simple game is nonempty for all profiles of such preferences if and only if the number of alternatives in the agenda is less than the Nakamura number of the game. The same is true if we replace the core by the core without majority dissatisfaction, obtained by deleting from the agenda all the alternatives that are non-maximal for all players in a winning coalition. Unlike the core, the core without majority dissatisfaction depends only on the players' sets of maximal elements and is included in the union of such sets. A result for an extended framework gives another sense in which the core without majority dissatisfaction behaves better than the core.Comment: 27+3 page

    Rhodium-catalyzed annulative coupling of isothiazoles with alkynes through n-s bond cleavage

    A Rh(III)-catalyzed annulative coupling of 3,5-diarylisothiazoles and alkynes is reported. The N–S bond in the isothi-azole ring acts as an internal oxidant to regenerate the Rh(III) species in combination with an external Cu(II) oxidant, and the corre-sponding 1:2 coupling products are obtained. The remarkable difference in the reaction outcome between isothiazoles and the relevant isoxazoles has been investigated by DFT calculations, revealing that the relative stability of the enolate intermediates dictates the product selectivity.Mihara G., Noguchi T., Nishii Y., et al.     Histidine-rich glycoprotein as a prognostic biomarker for sepsis

    Various biomarkers have been proposed for sepsis; however, only a few become the standard. We previously reported that plasma histidine-rich glycoprotein (HRG) levels decreased in septic mice, and supplemental infusion of HRG improved survival in mice model of sepsis. Moreover, our previous clinical study demonstrated that HRG levels in septic patients were lower than those in noninfective systemic inflammatory response syndrome patients, and it could be a biomarker for sepsis. In this study, we focused on septic patients and assessed the differences in HRG levels between the non-survivors and survivors. We studied ICU patients newly diagnosed with sepsis. Blood samples were collected within 24 h of ICU admission, and HRG levels were determined using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Ninety-nine septic patients from 11 institutes in Japan were included. HRG levels were significantly lower in non-survivors (n=16) than in survivors (n=83) (median, 15.1 [interquartile ranges, 12.7-16.6] vs. 30.6 [22.1-39.6] mu g/ml; p<0.01). Survival analysis revealed that HRG levels were associated with mortality (hazard ratio 0.79, p<0.01), and the Harrell C-index (predictive power) for HRG was 0.90. These results suggested that HRG could be a novel prognostic biomarker for sepsis

    Yeast functional assay of the p53 gene status in human cell lines maintained in our laboratory

    We used a yeast functional assay (functional analysis of separated alleles in yeast: FASAY) to determine the p53 gene status of human cell lines maintained in our laboratory. This assay enables the researcher to score wild-type p53 expression on the basis of the ability of expressed p53 to transactivate the reporter gene HIS 3 via the p53-responsive GAL 1 promoter in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The cell lines examined were ten hepatoma, two hepatoblastoma, three in vitro immortalized fibroblast, two osteosarcoma, a chondrosarcoma, an ovarian teratocarcinoma and a colon cancer cell line. Out of 20 cell lines, 11 cell lines had mutations in both alleles of the p53 gene, and another 8 cell lines had no mutation in the p53 gene. Thus, 55% of the cell lines examined had mutations in the p53. Interestingly, PA-1 cells had both the normal and the mutant p53 alleles, showing that FASAY is a useful method for detecting the wild-type and mutated p53 genes simultaneously. As for the three liver cell lines harboring HBsAg, there was no relationship between their p53 gene status and the presence of HBsAg. Two cell lines were normal for p53 status, while the other had a mutation of the p53 gene.</p
