Hedonic and Transcendent Conceptions of Value
In this paper we introduce a conceptual distinction between a hedonic and transcendent conception of value. We posit three linguistic earmarks by which one can distinguish these conceptions of value. We seek validation for the conceptual distinctions by examining the language contained in reviews of cars and reviews of paintings. In undertaking the empirical examination, we draw on the work of M.A.K. Halliday to identify clauses as fundamental units of meaning and to specify process types that can be mapped onto theoretical distinctions between the two conceptions of value. Extensions of this research are discussed
Revisiting the Meaning of Leadership
During the past fifty years, organizational scholarship on leadership has shifted from a focus on the significance of leadership for meaning-making to the significance of leadership for economic performance. This shift has been problematic for two reasons. First, it has given rise to numerous conceptual difficulties that now plague the study of leadership. Second, there is now comparatively little attention to the question of how individuals find meaning in the economic sphere even though this question should arguably be one of the most important questions for organizational scholarship. This chapter discusses several reasons for the shift, arguing that one of the most important has been the lack of a clear definition and operationalization of meaningful economic activity. As a first step to redressing this shift, we offer a definition and operationalization of meaningful action, and we propose a typology of executive behaviors as a foundation for a systematic exploration of the meaning-making capacity of leaders. We conclude with a discussion of the relationship between the capacity of leaders to infuse meaning and the capacity of leaders to impact on performance
Institutional complexity, stakeholders, and political dynamics: museums for organizational insights
Museums offer an important research context for organizational scholars. Competing demands from stakeholders—including professionals, funders, visitors, etc.—are central in museum operations, and multiple logics in the institutional environment add to the complexity of managing and leading these organizations. Building on this rich history of museum research as a source of organizational insights, this symposium brings together multi-method and multi-disciplinary studies within the museum context to shed new light on core issues of interest to organization and management scholars. Applying different angles, the four presentations cover topics ranging from field-level structuration, institutional entrepreneurship, logic changes, and organizational governance and leadership, and they span varied national and institutional contexts. By bringing these studies together in the symposium, we hope to introduce attendees to new research within this rich context and contribute to organization and management theory
Preferences in traumatic intracranial hemorrhage: bleeding vs. clotting
Patients with traumatic brain injury and resultant intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) are at high risk for developing venous thromboembolism (VTE). The use of thromboprophylaxis is effective at decreasing the rate of VTE, but at the potential expense of an increased risk of ICH progression. Physicians must carefully consider both the benefits and risks of VTE prophylaxis before prescribing chemical anticoagulants to these patients. To help clarify this difficult choice, Scales and colleagues performed a decision analysis to determine whether the benefits of thromboprophylaxis outweigh the potential risk of worsening ICH. There is increasing evidence that bleeding risks are not as prominent as previously thought. Although the results were largely inconclusive, the present study has identified areas for future research
Peran Kepemimpinan Kepala Madrasah Dalam Meningkatkan Mutu Pendidikan Islam
This article will briefly explain the role of the leadership of the head of school in improving education quality. A school leader has a strategic role to realize the school's quality of education. The institution needs a leader who has skills in leading. The principal mover is a figure and inspiration in designing and working on activities at the school. The leader is not just a Manager, he or she must also be a builder of mental, moral, spirit, and collectivity to his subordinates. He must not only use the written rules, but also the attitude of his behavior, image, and example in making a better leadership transformation agenda. The leader should not be regarded as an object of his exploits, thus his subordinates should be considered as friends and working partners. So there's no arbitrariness besides injustice. Leaders' role is meaningless without his subordinate
Life History and Narrative Analysis: Feminist Methodologies Contextualizing Black Women\u27s Experiences with Severe Mental Illness
This paper discusses a methodological approach to research that enhances critical analysis by contextualizing qualitative research findings within participants\u27 individual experiences. We demonstrate the combined use of life history methods and feminist narrative analysis to explore Black women\u27s everyday experiences with mental illness, from their perspectives. These interpretive methods reach beyond pathologized conceptions of identity and adjustment that often narrowly characterize mental illness among Black women. Instead, these methods holistically describe a participant\u27s experiences and strategies she uses to pursue goals and enhance her life. The use of the methods is illustrated with examples from the life narrative of Maria, a Black woman living with serious mental illness. Our findings underscore the need for rigorous, culturally appropriate methods and further research to evaluate participants\u27 standpoints and needs, and interventions to facilitate understanding and improved outcomes
Smoking a dangerous addiction: A systematic review on an underrated risk factor for oral diseases
Despite growing knowledge of the adverse effects of cigarette smoking on general health, smoking is one of the most widely prevalent addictions around the world. Globally, about 1.1 billion smokers and over 8 million people die each year because of cigarette smoking. Smoking acts as a source for a variety of oral and systemic diseases. Various periodontal issues such as increased pocket depth, loss of alveolar bone, tooth mobility, oral lesions, ulcerations, halitosis, and stained teeth are more common among smokers. This systematic review was conducted according to the guidelines from PRISMA, and research articles were retrieved from the Web database sources on 31 May 2021. The quality of research articles was ensured by the type of evidence from combined schema incorporating as schema-13 evidence type description, Cochrane health promotion and public health field (CHPPHF), and the health gains notation framework-14 screening question for quality assessment of qualitative and quantitative studies. Smokers have been found to have bleeding on probing, periodontal pockets, and clinical attachment loss compared to nonsmokers. Oral and respiratory cancers are among the most lethal known diseases caused by cigarette smoking and other commonly occurring sequelae such as stained teeth, periodontal diseases, etc
Gambaran Kepatuhan Pengobatan Masal di Daerah Endemis Kota Pekalongan
According to WHO, filariasis is one of the tropical diseases that can be eliminated through mass drug administration (MDA). Pekalongan City has started MDA since 2011. Through an evaluation in 2016, it was known that microfilaria rate (Mf rate) remained 1%. The purpose of this study was to describe the mass drug administration compliance in filariasis endemic area of Pekalongan City. This study used a rapid survey method. A two-stages random sampling was used in this study. The first stage was selected 25 clusters randomly from 10 villages based on proportionate to population size (PPS) method using C-Survey application. The second stage was selected 10 subjects randomly from each cluster. The sample of this research was 250 people. The results showed that the compliance to MDA was 76%. The characteristics of respondents as age, sex, occupation, knowledge of filariasis POMP, perceived of severity, place of getting information and frequency of getting information significantly had no relation with compliance to MDA (p> 0,050). Recent education, knowledge of filariasis, perceived of susceptibility, perceived of benefits, perceived of barriers, internal cues to action, external cues to action, source of MDA information and TPE support were significantly related to MDA compliance (p <0.050). Therefore, socialization that reach all levels of society was needed. Increasing the role of TPE in doing follow-up after giving the drug also needed to increase the compliance to MDA
Uji Daya Simpan Inokulum dan Ketahanan Lactobacillus plantarum terhadap pH Rendah sebagai Agensia Direct Fed Microbials untuk Ternak Ruminansia
Direct Fed microbials (DFM) is a product of non-pathogenic live microorganisms that is beneficial when given to humans or livestock to improve livestock health, feed conversion efficiency and perfomance by suppressing pathogenic microorganisms in the digestive tract and influencing the balance of intestinal microbes. This study aims to provide information about the potential of Lactobacillus plantarum FNCC 0020 as a DFM agent. This study used a descriptive experimental method. Parameters observed included resistance tests to acid pH (5, 3, 2), pH 7 were also tested to determine resistance to neutral pH. The ability of Lactobacillus plantarum FNCC 0020 to survive at room temperature with different incubation times (5, 7, 10 days) were also tested to determine the storability of Lactobacillus plantarum FNCC 0020 inoculum at room temperature.. The results showed that Lactobacillus plantarum FNCC 0020 had resistance to the lowest pH (2) and also survived at neutral pH (7) with a total colony of 2.25 x 108 and .3 x 107 CFU mL-1, respectively. Lactobacillus plantarum FNCC 0020 inoculum can be stored at room temperature for up to 10 days and still has a total colony of 3.8 x 107 CFU mL-1.Direct Fed microbials (DFM) merupakan suatu produk mikroorganisme hidup non patogen yang menguntungkan jika diberikan pada manusia atau ternak untuk memperbaiki kesehatan ternak, efesiensi konversi ransum dan laju pertumbuhan dengan cara menekan mikroorganisme patogen dalam saluran pencernaan dan mempengaruhi keseimbangan mikroba usus.
