Mutual Mentoring: Moving Beyond One-Size-Fits-All Mentoring

Mentoring offers a vital contribution to a successful academic career, particularly for women and faculty of color. The most common form of mentoring has been a traditional model, which is defined by a one-on-one relationship in which an experienced faculty member guides the career development of an early career faculty member. Recent literature, however, has indicated the emergence of new, more flexible approaches to mentoring in which faculty build a network of multiple mentors who can address a variety of career competencies. In this interactive session, you will identify potential roadblocks to success in an academic career; explore both traditional and emerging models of mentoring; define your current mentoring network and what it might be, drawing on a range of examples from across the disciplines and career stages; and share best practices in mentoring

Bargaining a Progressive Contract - Manuscript

In the academic year 2000-2001, the University of Hawaii Professional Assembly (UHPA) sought to bargain a contract on its conventional cycle for the period 2002-2003 with the State of Hawaii. The effort failed, leading to a two-week strike in April, coinciding with a state-wide strike of the Hawaii State Teachers Association (HSTA). For the first time in U.S. history the entirety of a state’s public education system was on strike with its state employer. For UHPA the strike had been provoked primarily by the gap between the state’s salary offer and the union’s request. To place the matter in context, during the 1990’s, while the other states had experienced “Clinton prosperity” with a record number of quarters of positive economic growth, Hawai’i (its economy closely tied to Japan’s) had lagged, entering negative growth in 1996. From 1993 onward, the University struggled to maintain its state budgetary support, and collective bargaining for all public unions was a tortured affair. Matters came to a head in the strike of April 2001

Supporting the Neophyte Writer: The Importance of Scaffolding the Process

Writing for publication can be a demanding and stressful experience, yet producing research outputs is a core part of academic life. This article aims to explore how 'neophyte' or novice academic writers can be supported in producing scholarly papers. It analyses a variety of causes for the difficulties faced by new writers, with a focus on the types of motivation that can be harnessed to improve success. The article acknowledges that promoting intrinsic motivation can enhance the writing experience, and investigates how this can be achieved using the familiar tool, Microsoft PowerPoint as a scaffold to develop an article. Although many academics exploit PowerPoint to teach, few of us turn this tool into a writing aid that can help to keep the writing process on track by providing a concise outline of the developing argument in an academic paper. The article concentrates on collaborative writing for publication, which is helpful for neophyte writers and busy academics because the burden of production can be shared. Possible reasons for high attrition rates in publication writing are considered,  including a lack of schema development, cognitive overload, and reduced motivation to write. The article demonstrates how PowerPoint can be employed as a catalyst to initiate research writing and foster productivity
