Music, sounds, the Stradivarius and the computer: A dialogue between the music-maker and the music-listener
In what might be described as an 'ecological' spirit, here I recycle an ancient form, the dialogue. I find the dialogue form particularly appealing for its potential to encapsulate ideas both as content and form. This dialogue, between the music-maker and music-listener, is intended as an allegory that uses accessible language in a contemporary, conversational style. From an epistemological perspective, the split maker-listener may be viewed as a fabrication that subsumes numerous conflicts at personal, group and societal levels. The text is about creativity, freedom and ownership, about concept, percept and practice within multidisciplinary and multicultural contexts. It can be reconstructed in different ways when the music-maker and the music-listener are personified under a multitude of guises within multiple contexts.
I have added a bibliographic list following the dialogue that includes some examples of the background reading that has helped to shape the thinking underlying the text. In particular, I have been deeply influenced by Gregory Bateson's writings, especially his 'metalogues', a collection of humorous, deceptively light dialogues that do not specify theatrical elements. I feel this lack of obvious affective content in the text allows readers to construe their own views of how the negotiation of discourses may take place, regardless of what I may have imagined or thought to have implied – or not – using a few italicised words

Biological Properties and Mechanisms of Action of Camphor-Based Metal Complexes for Therapeutic Purposes
Surgical excision combined with chemotherapy with Cisplatin and its analogues is the
main treatment for ovarian cancer. Although it is effective as first-line regime, 75% of
the patients can experience recurrence and secondary effects, becoming vulnerable to
develop resistance to chemotherapy and death.
The unique biological properties of camphorimine complexes based on different metal
sources such as CuCl, CuCl2, Ag(NO3), Ag(OAc) and KAu(CN)2 anticipate their potential
use as alternative to Cisplatin based therapies. The biological activity of silver camphorimine
complexes against Cisplatin sensitive A2780 and Cisplatin resistant A2780cisR ovarian
cancer cells have been previously described and the results obtained revealed that
those complexes displayed higher activity than Cisplatin in the ovarian cancer cells and
low toxicity in non-tumoral HEK 293 (human embryonic kidney) cells.
Encouraged by such results, the biological effects of different metals on the properties
of camphorimine complexes were investigated in order to evaluate their potential therapeutic
value. The cytotoxic activity of these complexes, their cellular uptake, cellular
distribution and mechanism of action in OVCAR3 ovarian cancer cells were assessed.
Due to their high sensitivity in the detection of metals, ion beam techniques alone or
combined in nuclear microscopy, were used to quantitatively evaluate the cellular uptake
of the metal of interest and obtain images with micrometric resolution of the elemental
distributions in single cells. The results indicate that the low cellular uptake of copper
by OVCAR3 cells can explain the lower cytotoxicity of these complexes in relation to
silver and gold analogues. Results highlight the importance of characterizing the cellular
uptake and distribution in cells to have clues to the cellular targets and the mechanisms
of action.
As propriedades biológicas de complexos metálicos de Cu(I), Cu(II), Ag(I) e Au(I)
Estes compostos revelaram maior atividade citotóxica do
School rankings in Portugal : exploring some of their effects
In this article we have taken into account some of the effects of the publishing of
the rankings on the organizational action of the public school educational actors, namely in Portugal. Bearing in mind the fact that the effects of the
rankings may neither be lineal nor uniform (PINTO, 2009), we attempt to
question whether the referred rankings produce educational quasi-market
effects. To further this discussion, we based ourselves on a study (during the
school year 2006/2007) conducted by us on teachers, school administration,
students and parents in a school in a city belonging to the area of Douro Litoral.
The theoretical-conceptual frame that supports the interpretation of the
gathered data comes from different conceptual points of view, although in an
articulated form. Both sociological concepts of the critical education and
sociological concepts of Sociology of the educational institutions are called
upon. Based on the interpretation of the gathered data, we came to a
conclusion that, although not exclusively, the rankings contribute to the
emergence of processes of social and academic selection of students and
competition among schools; as for the latter case, situations stand out that we
classify as school image promotion and fabrication (BALL, 2002). We encase
those behaviours in the school image while an institution of organicist type
Neoliberal logics and new roles of parents in public schools: reflexions based on some investigations
In different parts of the world the reforms that are labeled as neoliberal have stimulated a redefinition of the parents' roles in the field of public education. Within this context, among the different steps adopted, we should like to highlight the publication of school rankings according to students' grades in national exams, which are designated as ranking of schools and parents' free choice of school. In theory, this redefinition of the role of parents, as consumers, raises new challenges and opportunities, but, simultaneously, it might result in a new form of reproduction of social and cultural inequalities that are present across the public school, as several authors have alerted (Ball, 1995). With this situation in mind, we seek, in this communication, to realize a review of works that look into empirical investigation on the new power that is bestowed on parents. Specifically, we reflect upon the issue of whether the results obtained point to a strengthening of the inequalities between parents of different social and cultural groups in their exercise of the new power that is attributed to them in their participation in the public school. To realize this work, we seek to develop an analysis of the content of several investigations carried out in different contexts, in order to identify the following categories: scope of the investigation, groups of parents involved in the investigation, techniques of information gathering, synthesis of the comparison between the results of these works, to obtain a global overview of the (in)ability of certain groups of parents to exercise their new power.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Point-of-care testing is commonly defined as diagnostic laboratorial tests combining sampling,
analysis and results reported in a very simple and quick way, which can be performed not
only in hospitals, but also in health centers, pharmacies, or even at the home patient.
The implementation of these tests at the community pharmacy is nowadays a very common
practice that represents an advantage for the health system. The role played by the
pharmacy in the provision of such services aims to make the screen and early diagnostic of
certain deseases, as well as to monitorize efficiently the effect of drugs in the patient with
quality and at a reasonable cost
New carpets for new markets: production and consumption of indo-persian carpets in 16th and 17th centuries
Estão disponíveis no CD na Biblioteca Mário Sottomayor CardiaCarpets belonging to the so-called ‘Indo-Persian’ type are among the most esteemed
Islamic carpets from 17th-century Europe, based on their numerous representations
that survive in 16th- and 17th-century European paintings and in the inventories of the
great houses of many European countries. 1 The approximately 80 ‘Indo-Persian’
carpets extant in Portuguese collections support the perception that this carpet type
was certainly being produced in great quantities.2 Their appropriation by the state in
1834, as a result of the abolishment of the convents3 where they had arrived during
the 17th century, led to their incorporation in Portuguese public collections and, thus
explains their survival in such high numbers.
With the exception of two examples (84Tp and 26.277, Appendix D) that can be
linked to the aristocracy and are included in this study, the provenance of about 90
percent of these 17th century objects is well recorded. They can be associated with
convents or churches where they were used in the past, although the exact date of
their import is unknown.4 Therefore, they present an exceptional opportunity to
increase our knowledge about the ‘Indo-Persian’ carpet type, especially when
compared with the small numbers of surviving carpets with 17th century provenance
in collections from Europe, particularly the Netherlands5, or elsewhere in the world
Introduction: Ultrasound (US) has an important role in musculoskeletal (MSK)
evaluation, allowing the study of muscle morphology and function. Muscle thickness
(MT) and muscle echo-intensity (EI) are two important parameters that may quantify
muscle structural adaptations to a variety of stimuli. US elastography can also offer
semi-quantitative and/or quantitative assessment of tissue stiffness providing relevant
information about adaptations of muscle mechanical properties.
Purpose: The general aim of the studies presented in this thesis is to explore the
potential of quantitative US imaging for assessing the adaptations and responses of the
muscle tissue to increased contractile activity using B-mode US and US elastography.
The studies were centred on the quadriceps femoris muscle and addressed the study of
the effect of strength training and of acute muscle contractile activity on MT, EI and
muscle stiffness.
Materials and methods: Three different studies were conducted and reported along this
thesis. A total of 64 young adults of both genders participated in the studies. The first
study (N = 20) evaluated the intra- and inter-session (one week apart) reproducibility of
MT and EI parameters and the role of plane of view (transverse vs. longitudinal) and ROI
dimension on measurements’ accuracy using the intraclass correlation coefficient
[ICC(3,1)], the standard error of measurement (SEM), and the smallest detectable change
(SDC). Bland-Altman analysis was used to study the level of agreement between plane
views and ROI sizes. The second study (N = 28) investigated the effect of a 15-week
strength program on MT and EI in several regions of the heads of the quadriceps
femoris. This study included a control group and two training groups performing
concentric or eccentric strength training. During this study, changes in vastus lateralis’
(VL) stiffness in response to strength training were evaluated using quasi-static
elastography (QSE). In the final study (N = 16), acute changes in VL’s stiffness
associated with passive stretching, performance of short but intense contractile
activity, and muscle isometric contractions were investigated by means of supersonic
shear wave imaging (SSI).
Results: Moderate to very high reliability was found for MT (intra-session, ICCs: 0.82-
0.99; inter-session, ICCs: 0.70-0.98) and EI (intra-session, ICCs: 0.74-0.97; inter-session,
ICCs: 0.48-0.94). In general, reliability for MT and EI measures was higher in the
transverse plane and when using a larger ROI, respectively. Measurements of EI taken
with a small versus a large ROI are associated with a small bias and larger limits of
Morphological ultrasound evaluation in acute and chronic muscle overloading
agreement (LoA). In study 2, 15 weeks of strength training increased MT in the majority
but not in all of the scanned regions. Strength training failed in changing EI in most of
the quadriceps femoris, excepting in the VI and some regions of the VL. Strength
training significantly increased VL’s stiffness. No differences were observed in our
quantitative US parameters between concentric and eccentric training. The final study
demonstrated an acute increase of around 10% in VL’s shear modulus as a result of
performing maximal isometric, concentric, and eccentric contractions. The shear
modulus of the VL also increased when the knee moved from 10º to 50º and then to 90º
flexion. Finally, a linear relationship between the shear modulus and the level of
isometric muscle contraction was observed.
Conclusions: Ultrasound measures of MT and EI show moderate to very high reliability.
The reliability and agreement of MT and EI measurements are improved in transverse
scans and with larger ROIs. QSE could demonstrate an increase in muscle stiffness as a
result of strength training. SSI proved to be a good method to investigate muscle
mechanical properties changes associated with muscle function. These results
emphasise the value of an objective and quantifiable muscle US evaluation for studying
muscle adaptation to exercise training and muscle function, in general.
