    Probing Hadronic Structure with The Decay ΔNl+l\Delta\rightarrow Nl^+l^-

    We compute the branching ratio for ΔNe+e\Delta\rightarrow Ne^+e^- and ΔNμ+μ\Delta\rightarrow N\mu^+\mu^- in chiral perturbation theory and find that both decays should be observable at CEBAF. With sufficiently low thresholds on the e+ee^+e^- invariant mass a branching ratio of 105\sim 10^{-5} may be observed for ΔNe+e\Delta\rightarrow Ne^+e^-. For the ΔNμ+μ\Delta\rightarrow N\mu^+\mu^- decay mode we predict a branching ratio of 3×1073\times 10^{-7}. The dependence of the M1 and E2 amplitudes on the momentum transfer will provide a useful test of chiral perturbation theory which predicts 20%\sim 20\% variation over the allowed kinematic range.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, UCSD/PTH 93-06, QUSTH-93-02, Duke-TH-93-4

    Fatigue Assessment of Wire and Arc Additively Manufactured Ti-6Al-4V

    Wire and arc additively manufactured (WAAM) parts and structures often present internal defects, such as gas pores, and cause irregularities in the manufacturing process. In order to describe and assess the effect of internal defects in fatigue design, this research study investigates the fatigue strength of wire arc additive manufactured structures covering the influence of imperfections, particularly gas pores. Single pass WAAM structures are manufactured using titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V and round fatigue, tensile specimen are extracted. Tensile tests and uniaxial fatigue tests with a load stress ratio of R = 0.1 were carried out, whereby fatigue test results are used for further assessments. An extensive fractographic and metallographic fracture surface analysis is utilized to characterize and measure crack-initiating defects. As surface pores as well as bulk pores are detected, a stress intensity equivalent ∆Keqv transformation approach is presented in this study. Thereby, the defect size of the surface pore is transformed to an increased defect size, which is equivalent to a bulk pore. Subsequently, the fatigue strength assessment method by Tiryakioğlu, commonly used for casting processes, is applied. For this method, a cumulative Gumbel extreme value distribution is utilized to statistically describe the defect size. The fitted distribution with modified data reveals a better agreement with the experimental data than unmodified. Additionally, the validation of the model shows that the usage of the ∆K modified data demonstrates better results, with a slight underestimation of up to about −7%, compared to unmodified data, with an overestimation of up to about 14%, comparing the number of load cycles until failure. Hence, the presented approach applying a stress intensity equivalent transformation of surface to bulk pores facilitates a sound fatigue strength assessment of WAAM Ti-6Al-4V structures

    Stabilization of the genome of the mismatch repair deficient Mycobacterium tuberculosis by context-dependent codon choice

    Background: The rate at which a stretch of DNA mutates is determined by the cellular systems for DNA replication and repair, and by the nucleotide sequence of the stretch itself. One sequence feature with a particularly strong influence on the mutation rate are nucleotide repeats. Some microbial pathogens use nucleotide repeats in their genome to stochastically vary phenotypic traits and thereby evade host defense. However, such unstable sequences also come at a cost, as mutations are often deleterious. Here, we analyzed how these opposing forces shaped genome stability in the human pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis. M. tuberculosis lacks a mismatch repair system, and this renders nucleotide repeats particularly unstable. Results: We found that proteins of M. tuberculosis are encoded by using codons in a context-dependent manner that prevents the emergence of nucleotide repeats. This context-dependent codon choice leads to a strong decrease in the estimated frame-shift mutation rate and thus to an increase in genome stability. Conclusion: These results indicate that a context-specific codon choice can partially compensate for the lack of a mismatch repair system, and helps to maintain genome integrity in this pathogen

    Incorporation of n-3 PUFA and γ-linolenic acid in blood lipids and red blood cell lipids together with their influence on disease activity in patients with chronic inflammatory arthritis - a randomized controlled human intervention trial

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background and aim</p> <p>Marine n-3 fatty acids and γ-linolenic acid both have anti-inflammatory effects and may be useful to help treat inflammatory diseases. The effects of these alone or combined were examined in patients with arthritis in a randomized controlled trial.</p> <p>Design</p> <p>Patients with rheumatoid arthritis or psoriatic arthritis were randomized into four groups in a double-blind, placebo-controlled parallel designed study. Patients received the respective capsules (1: 3.0 g n-3 LC-PUFA/d; 2: 3.2 g γ-linolenic acid/d; 3: 1.6 g n-3 LC-PUFA + 1.8 g γ-linolenic acid/d; 4: 3.0 g olive oil) for a twelve week period. Clinical status was evaluated and blood samples were taken at the beginning and at the end of the period. Differences before and after intervention were tested with paired t-test or with Wilcoxon test for non-normal data distribution.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>60 patients (54 rheumatoid arthritis, 6 psoriatic arthritis) were randomised, 47 finished per protocol. In group 1, the ratio of arachidonic acid (AA)/eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) decreased from 6.5 ± 3.7 to 2.7 ± 2.1 in plasma lipids and from 25.1 ± 10.1 to 7.2 ± 4.7 in erythrocyte membranes (p ≤ 0.001). There was no significant influence on AA/EPA ratio due to interventions in group 2-4. In group 2, the intake of γ-linolenic acid resulted in a strong rise of γ-linolenic acid and dihomo-γ-linolenic acid concentrations in plasma lipids, cholesteryl esters, and erythrocyte membranes. The combination of n-3 LC-PUFA and γ-linolenic acid (group 3) led to an increase of γ-linolenic acid and dihomo-γ-linolenic acid concentrations in plasma lipids, cholesteryl esters, and erythrocyte mem-branes. This increase was only half of that in group 2.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Incorporation of eicosanoid precursor FAs was influenced by an intake of n-3 LC-PUFA and γ-linolenic acid suggesting a possible benefit for therapy of chronic inflammatory diseases.</p> <p>Trial Registration</p> <p>ClinicalTrials <a href="http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01179971">NCT01179971</a></p
