The Anisotropic Spatial Distribution of Hypervelocity Stars
We study the distribution of angular positions and angular separations of
unbound hypervelocity stars (HVSs). HVSs are spatially anisotropic at the
3-sigma level. The spatial anisotropy is significant in Galactic longitude, not
in latitude, and the inclusion of lower velocity, possibly bound HVSs reduces
the significance of the anisotropy. We discuss how the observed distribution of
HVSs may be linked to their origin. In the future, measuring the distribution
of HVSs in the southern sky will provide additional constraints on the spatial
anisotropy and the origin of HVSs.Comment: 4 pages, accepted to ApJ Letter
Colorado Native Plant Society Newsletter, Vol. 4 No. 2, March-April 1980
The Colorado Native Plant Society Newsletter will be published on a bimonthly basis. The contents will consist primarily of a calendar of events, notes of interest, editorials, listings of new members and conservation news. Until there is a Society journal, the Newsletter will include short articles also. The deadline for the Newsletter is one month prior to its release.https://epublications.regis.edu/aquilegia/1018/thumbnail.jp
Comparative ergonomic workflow and user experience analysis of MRI versus fluoroscopy-guided vascular interventions:an iliac angioplasty exemplar case study
Purpose A methodological framework is introduced to assess and compare a conventional fluoroscopy protocol for peripheral angioplasty with a new magnetic resonant imaging (MRI)-guided protocol. Different scenarios were considered during interventions on a perfused arterial phantom with regard to time-based and cognitive task analysis, user experience and ergonomics. Methods Three clinicians with different expertise performed a total of 43 simulated common iliac angioplasties (9 fluoroscopic, 34 MRI-guided) in two blocks of sessions. Six different configurations for MRI guidance were tested in the first block. Four of them were evaluated in the second block and compared to the fluoroscopy protocol. Relevant stages’ durations were collected, and interventions were audio-visually recorded from different perspectives. A cued retrospective protocol analysis (CRPA) was undertaken, including personal interviews. In addition, ergonomic constraints in the MRI suite were evaluated. Results Significant differences were found when comparing the performance between MRI configurations versus fluoroscopy. Two configurations [with times of 8.56 (0.64) and 9.48 (1.13) min] led to reduce procedure time for MRI guidance, comparable to fluoroscopy [8.49 (0.75) min]. The CRPA pointed out the main influential factors for clinical procedure performance. The ergonomic analysis quantified musculoskeletal risks for interventional radiologists when utilising MRI. Several alternatives were suggested to prevent potential low-back injuries. Conclusions This work presents a step towards the implementation of efficient operational protocols for MRI-guided procedures based on an integral and multidisciplinary framework, applicable to the assessment of current vascular protocols. The use of first-user perspective raises the possibility of establishing new forms of clinical training and education
Differential expression of microRNA-206 and its target genes in pre-eclampsia
Objectives: Pre-eclampsia is a multi-system disease that significantly contributes to maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. In this study, we used a non-biased microarray approach to identify novel circulating miRNAs in maternal plasma that may be associated with pre-eclampsia.
Methods: Plasma samples were obtained at 16 and 28 weeks of gestation from 18 women who later developed pre-eclampsia (cases) and 18 matched women with normotensive pregnancies (controls). We studied miRNA expression profiles in plasma and subsequently confirmed miRNA and target gene expression in placenta samples. Placental samples were obtained from an independent cohort of 19 women with pre-eclampsia matched with 19 women with normotensive pregnancies.
Results: From the microarray, we identified 1 miRNA that was significantly differentially expressed between cases and controls at 16 weeks of gestation and 6 miRNAs that were significantly differentially expressed at 28 weeks. Following qPCR validation only one, miR-206, was found to be significantly increased in 28 week samples in women who later developed pre-eclampsia (1.4 fold change ± 0.2). The trend for increase in miR-206 expression was mirrored within placental tissue from women with pre-eclampsia. In parallel, IGF-1, a target gene of miR-206, was also found to be down-regulated (0.41 ± 0.04) in placental tissue from women with pre-eclampsia. miR-206 expression was also detectable in myometrium tissue and trophoblast cell lines.
Conclusions: Our pilot study has identified miRNA-206 as a novel factor up-regulated in pre-eclampsia within the maternal circulation and in placental tissue
Developing Subject Mastery in Teacher Training
Developing subject knowledge and pedagogy in trainee teachers is crucial for their success in the classroom. The Further Education and Skills Subject Passports provide a structured framework that integrates theoretical learning with practical application, ensuring trainees gain the subject-specific expertise they need. By supporting mentors in setting clear, subject-specific success criteria, targets, and providing constructive feedback, we foster a comprehensive and effective teacher development process
A generalised Euler-Poincaré formula for associahedra
We derive a formula for the number of flip-equivalence classes of tilings of an n-gon by collections of tiles of shape dictated by an integer partition λ. The proof uses the Euler–Poincaré formula; and the formula itself generalises the Euler–Poincaré formula for associahedr
